There's a common misconception, particularly in business, that being a jerk is a necessary ingredient on the way to becoming and remaining successful. But there's no data to support this. Sure, some jerks succeed, but that's despite of them being jerks, not because of it. For every person who has a reputation as a bully or a deal breaker or an intimidator, there are as many people who succeeded by weaving together disparate communities, by keeping their word, by quietly creating value. Both roads can work. The presence of jerks at the top confirms this, but so does the predominance of good people. The problem with the jerk path isn't about it being effective, it's that you'd have to spend every day being a jerk.
