Most business owners think they know their marketing problem and chase quick fixes like new websites or Facebook ads. But without marketing expertise, you're probably wrong about what's actually broken. Tell a marketing professional your business challenge and let them diagnose the real issue, like you would with a doctor or mechanic.

Too many business owners think they already know what marketing problem they have and they just want someone to do it. Maybe they believe their business issues will be solved with a new website, or Facebook ads, or email newsletters, or whatever. But unless they've been educated or trained in marketing, they're probably going to be wrong. What they should be doing is explaining their business problem to someone who understands marketing, who can then identify the cause and propose a solution. It's not so different from engaging a doctor or a plumber or a mechanic. Your job is to identify the problem. If you're employing someone who does this for a living, it's up to them to propose the best way forward. Ultimately, of course, it's your decision whether you take their advice or not. But if you decide to ignore them and do your own thing and it all goes to crap, then you've only got yourself to blame.
