A runner describes hitting a wall on a 6-mile run because he couldn't see the endpoint, then connects it to work fatigue. When you can visualize a finish line and focus on who benefits from your effort, you find the energy to sprint.

I'm tired. I'm tired. I don't know about you. Maybe you're tired too. So I was running this morning. It dawned on me something that really is kind of interesting, I guess, at least interesting to me. You ever seen those races? And like back in March, I ran a marathon. Most of it I finished, but I didn't run all of it. But You ever seen at the end, you know, somebody have gone 25.5 miles, then all of a sudden at the end they've got this newfound energy and they can sprint to the finish. I know I did. I don't know if it was really sprinting, but I was running a whole lot faster than I had been. People doing hard work. So anyway, the thought I had was that as I was running today, I felt great up until about— I was just running a 6-mile run and I felt great up until about mile 5. And then I just got tired. I was exhausted. And no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't envision a finish line for me to rally to because I knew it wasn't really there. And that got me thinking about life and work and how, you know, certainly none of us want to really go to the finish line, do we? But imagining finishing whatever it is we're trying to accomplish in life. Maybe build a legacy for your life, or just do a good job at work, or be a good parent, or coach a kid's soccer team. Whatever it is, we have kind of an outcome that we can see, and it gives us energy that we didn't have to complete the task. And so if you're tired at work Or if you're tired of work, probably more likely what it is, then could it be that you just don't see any end to it? You don't see the meaning behind it. You don't see the result that you're generating. And if that's the case, chances are pretty good you're focusing on yourself and not on what the work brings to all the people you're serving, whether it's the people you work with or the vendors who sell the products and services that you use in your work, or the ultimate customer, or perhaps the family that you're supporting. It's easy to get tired when we think about ourselves, but when we know that we have an outcome, when we know we have a destination that's worthy, newfound energy can be found real close to the finish line. So, thought for the day. Hope that was helpful for you.
