+1: Always An Excuse To Not Do Something (#022)
2 Feb 2021 · 0 min
Alexandra J. Johnson talks about the excuses that keep mothers from pursuing their dreams, sharing how she abandoned her own YouTube channel after becoming a parent. She pushes back on the idea that you need perfect conditions to start: write down what you want and what's stopping you, then take one small step, whether that's a five-minute workout or a single email.
Welcome to Mama Goddess. I'm your host, Alexandra J. Johnson. This podcast is all about rocking your goddess life, creating vibrant health and celebrating motherhood and family life. It's about living an authentically awesome life. Let's have.
Hello, this is Alexandra. Welcome to another Optimize+1. Is there something that you want to do more of in your life? Some sort of dream or vision that you don't seem to have enough time for? Or maybe you tell yourself now is not the right time. Maybe you'll do it when things settle down. Well, let me tell you a little story. I love doing videos. I started a YouTube channel 12 years ago. This is play for me. But since becoming a mother, I haven't invested the time into creating them. I got clarity. I wanted to start doing them a while back, and it seemed like there was always a reason to wait a bit longer to do them. My sleep was messed up with a toddler. Days are full with home educating the children. And then there was excuse about doing this style of video. It's different than I've done in the past and I want to feel like it's really great work and well, it's not that important anyways. I could do it next month and. And. And excuses galore. Well, the bottom line is I didn't make it a priority. The reality is no one is going to make our dreams a priority if we don't. No one is going to wake you up and say, hey, get writing or go to that class or call that teacher or book a flight, ask for a raise, find your ideal job. Our dreams are on us, and there's always an excuse to not follow them. Always. And I'm not saying our excuses aren't valid. There's usually a kernel of truth, which is why they can be so darn sticky. Keeping us stuck in not moving forward with what we say is important. So what is something you've been wanting to do or create? Write it down. Yes, right now. I'll wait. Pause. What's your excuse? Why are you not doing it? Write that down too. It's helpful to see our dreams and our excuses down on paper. How long are you going to let this excuse stop you from doing what you say you want to do? And how long has it already stopped? You don't wait another day. In regards to these videos, I just had to go for it. I'm never going to be perfectly ready. I reminded myself that I just needed to embrace the suck. As I learn new systems and ways of going about creating and filming. The only way that I'm going to get better is to get in the game. The game happens out there in the world of experience, not in our heads. Chuck the excuse, embrace the suck and get in the game. I've got your back. I'm rooting for you now. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Think about the thing you are going to do after this video the Baby step. Make the call, send the email, make an appointment, write or work out for five minutes. Stop believing the excuses that are limiting your life. Do what's important to you. See your energy expanding, your power getting brighter. A sense of strength and purpose take over your mind and body. The conviction that you are doing this. No more excuses. Take another deep breath. Visualize yourself doing it. Feeling this win in your body. Feel how good it feels to do the things that you say are important. Saying yes to your dreams. As you open your eyes, do a little fist pump and a happy dance. Yeah baby. You've got this. Now go crush it. Sending you big love and blessings.
