Alexandra J. Johnson tells mothers and caregivers to stop making excuses about time and answer their creative call. Even a few hours per week for art, writing, or music keeps the fire alive. Self-care belongs on the same priority list as caring for others.

Hello, this is Alexandra. Welcome to another optimize +1 Sarah Ban Breknach writes in Simple Abundance but the house calls to us. The children call to us. The work calls to us. When then does the painting or the poem call to us? Probably every day. But we're too busy listening to everybody else instead of our authentic selves. Maybe it's because we've convinced ourselves that we really don't have the time for personal pursuits that bring us contentment if they take longer than 15 minutes. Perhaps we don't hear the whispers of authentic longing because we don't want to hear. If we hear, we might have to acknowledge, even respond, end quote. Yes, my house, children, husband and work call to me. And yes, my creativity also calls to me every single day. And yes, I've made excuses about not having enough time, probably more times than I'd like to admit. Yet the creative stirrings continue to beckon. Are there things that are calling to you, but you aren't making time for them? Are you making excuses? Do you tell yourself when you have more time, you will do it? Maybe when this changes or that changes, then of course you'll work on your art, or you will create that course or go back to school, write more poetry, go backpacking, make more music, etc. I think there are many ways we lie to ourselves about what we truly want. We get busy being a good woman, a good friend, daughter, employee, wife, mother, taking care of others. And I'm all about taking care of others. It's a big part of my purpose. It's also essential that we put ourselves on that list of people who need care and love. This doesn't need to be something we spend hours a day on either. Maybe it's something we spend hours a week on. We may think that isn't enough, but sometimes that's all we need to keep the fire ablaze in our soul, to remind ourselves that we are more than our roles and to do lists. We can distract ourselves in so many different ways, especially in the modern world. A lot of times we might even tell ourselves they're not distractions. Our family needs us, work needs us, and being there for other people is a noble act. But we also need to learn how to be there for ourselves. It's an essential skill for our happiness, our passions call to us. Yes, probably every day. There are glimmers of joy that we can envision, but we brush aside. Or we wait. And wait and wait, never taking the actions that will make it more likely that we can set those dreams into motion. Today's video is a loving nudge to help you honor that longing that keeps coming up again and again in your heart. What if you let go of the excuses of why you can't or shouldn't give that dream some attention? What would happen if you answered the call? Sending you big love and blessings.
