+1: Shifting Your Experience in a Moment (#010)
15 Jan 2021 · 0 min
Alexandra J. Johnson describes a moment with her two-and-a-half-year-old who refused the stroller for a barefoot walk. When impatience set in, she paused, focused on the colors around her—green trees, yellow flowers, blue sky—and shifted from frustration to joy. The walk ran ten minutes over, but the practice of noticing colors can transform any derailed plan into connection.

Hello, this is Alexandra. Welcome to another optimize +1. I was out for a lovely walk with my daughter in the stroller and we were cruising along and 10 minutes into our 20 minute ish walk, she wanted to get out and walk. She didn't have any shoes on and I had intended on doing a very efficient walk and then getting back to make lunch. I felt the rise of impatience wanting her to get back into the stroller, also realizing that the chance of me getting her sweet two and a half year old body back into the stroller without a struggle was probably not going to happen. So I took a deep breath and I got down to her level and I looked into her eyes and I told her that if we that if she wanted to walk, she would need to focus on actually walking, not not exploring because I needed to get home to make lunch for her and her brother. She smiled and then started walking. I still wasn't totally jazzed about this plan, so I took another deep breath and I looked up and I noticed the green trees. Then I noticed some yellow flowers, the blue sky, the red stop sign. I took another deep breath and as I focused on the beautiful colors around me, this altered my state. I felt the shift. I was transfixed on the vibrancy that was all around me. My attention shifted and therefore my experience changed. I then looked down at her walking barefoot, her sweet little toes, and wondered how it must feel to be a two year old again. Then I watched her light up with delight as she ran and tried to jump up and down on the curb. We laughed, we held hands and it felt so joyful. The walk only ended up being about 10 minutes longer than I had planned. So many lessons in that simple shift. I could have tried to force her back in the stroller. I could have been in my mind and been irritated with her wanting to walk and I would have missed out on this simple adventure with her. I think that happens so many times in our days. We get so locked into how it should go and what it should look like and what people should and shouldn't do. And then we live in our minds missing the potential joy nuggets all around us. When we can shift by taking a deep breath, moving our bodies, looking for the colors that surround us. Magic happens. It may not look that different to other people, but we notice the shift in ourselves and those are the most important shifts we can make. After that walk, I came back feeling happy and renewed and more connected to my daughter and grateful for our walk in nature. So next time things aren't going according to your master plan. See if you can shift by looking for the colors. Allow this shift in attention to transform your experience. Notice how many colors you can see. Drink them in. Sometimes I like to label them red, orange, green, pink. Take a deep breath, then notice how you feel and see if there's a different way to respond to what's currently happening. There's usually a mind shift that can create miracles in any given situation if only we're willing to see them. Sending you big love and blessings.
