+1: Spendidly Imperfect (#012)
19 Jan 2021 · 0 min
Alexandra J. Johnson's skin broke out after three years of breastfeeding stopped and her hormones shifted. She'd kept her skin clear for seven years through diet, but now she's reframing imperfection as a signal her body needs balance. She uses the breakout as a metaphor for any flaw we're ashamed of, and asks what limiting beliefs are holding you back.
Welcome to Mama Goddess. I'm your host, Alexandra J. Johnson. This podcast is all about rocking your goddess life, creating vibrant health and celebrating motherhood and family life. It's about living an authentically awesome life. Let's have some fun.
Hello, this is Alexandra. Welcome to another Optimize plus one. So I had these bumps on my face. Yeah, you probably can't see them. I have makeup on them. But last week they were pretty big and they actually looked like I had a third eye, which was pretty awesome. And to be honest, I wanted to cancel my recording session. My story was that I can't do videos with a huge red bump on my forehead. Then I thought, why not? Because I won't look good. Because I'll be imperfect. Because I just can't. Alright, a little backstory. I used to really struggle with my skin. That will probably be another video sharing more about that journey. But I haven't had an issue with my skin in over seven years since taking out grains. Even gluten free grains. And any kind of sugar. Yes, even things like coconut sugar, honey, etc. And maybe this is a little TMI. But after being pregnant and nursing, I finally got my period back. It's been over three years now and yes, that is a really, really long time. It was the same with my son. I breastfed him for almost three years and I'll probably stop around that same time for my daughter. That's just how my body rolls. So the short is that my body and hormones are changing as I find my new regular cycle. And well, it's showing up on my face with some red bumps and also in my oura ring results because that is showing up there too. Okay, so that's enough about my face. Now to the point of this video. We all have our own imperfections and I don't even really like that word. It's just life happening. Is this really a flaw? No, it's just my body doing what it needs to do to find balance. My job is to support it with the right nutrition, movement, sleep, meditation as I shift into a new monthly cycle. And I'm actually thrilled about this process. Not so much this big red bump. But I do love having my period again, a topic for another video. But I felt shame about having it. I had a day ish where I really didn't want to do these videos. Then I said screw it, I'm doing it. We can wait our whole lives waiting for things to be perfect. And the reality is that there's no such thing as perfect as we all intellectually know I am splendidly imperfect and will be for the rest of my life. So hello. Why do I try to hide from that? I used to not want to go and see people if my face was breaking out or if I felt like I didn't look good or felt fat or whatever the reason. And I am not willing to miss out on the joy of living my life the way I want to because of a red bump or any perceived imperfection. So here we are recording the next series of plus ones with a little extra mojo because yeah baby, that's how I'm rocking it today. So the question for today, what metaphorical red bump is stopping you from moving forward? Is there any area of your life that you're not living to the fullest because of a so called imperfection? What would it look like if you showed up and said, here I am? As we like to say in our house, like it or love it. The thing is, we aren't the only ones that can feel scared about being judged, ridiculed, or not having everything perfectly together. Everyone feels that at times. Are we really going to let that fear stop us from doing things that we want to do? I hope not. I'm grateful for this red bump because it helped me see the story that was hiding below the surface. A story that has probably limited me more than I can even imagine. And as my wise son said to me, mommy, imagine you don't have the red bump on your forehead. Would you choose to record your videos? Yes. Yes I would. Thank you for that incredible coaching. Let's celebrate our splendidly imperfect faces, bodies, minds and hearts and lives. Sending you big love and blessings.
