Nurturing Your Child's Intuitive Spark with Sonia Choquette
9 May 2016 · 52 min
In this episode of the Mama Goddess podcast, host Alexandra J. Johnson interviews intuitive teacher and author Sonia Choquette. The conversation centers on the concept that children are born as "six‑sensory" beings with innate intuition, and that parents can either amplify or suppress this gift through the home environment and their own modeling. Choquette explains why her book The Intuitive Spark targets two audiences—parents who want to raise intuitively aware children and adults who need to re‑parent themselves. She shares stories illustrating children’s natural psychic awareness, offers concrete practices (e.g., checking in with the spirit, using a hand‑squeeze signal, humor, and respectful language), and stresses the importance of a high‑vibration, clutter‑free home. The dialogue also covers common parental obstacles such as self‑neglect, fear‑based control, and the tendency to project anxieties onto children. Throughout, Choquette advocates authenticity, humor, and mutual respect as the foundation for a safe, supportive family dynamic. The episode concludes with resources for listeners (website, newsletter, online courses, and the "Psychic Sit‑Ups" program).

Hello and welcome. I'm Alexandra J. Johnson and today's guest is Sonia Choquette. Sonia is a world renowned author, storyteller, vibrational healer and sixth sensory spiritual teacher. Her books have sold over a million copies worldwide, including her New York Times bestseller, the Answer is Simple. She is most recognized for her ability to instantly change vibration, lift depression and connect others to their intuition.
Welcome Sonya hi, it's my pleasure. Thank you for having me with you today.
Yes, I am thrilled to be chatting with you today and I so appreciate your work and I think I have read almost all of your books, so I am an active student in your wisdom. So thank you. I have been enjoying the Intuitive Spark and how to nurture your intuition as we prepare to have our first little one into the world. So thank you for that.
Yes, I actually believe in my own perception that the Intuitive Spark in many ways is my most important book of all the ones I've written.
And what inspired you to write it and why do you feel like it's most important?
I think it's most important because we are six sensory beings. We are all born with a cognition that allows us to perceive things directly and not through just our five senses. We all have the ability to tune into energy and source and our own divine knowing in addition to what our external senses are being fed. And we come in that way. We come in perfectly conscious, aware beings. But our conditioning and the environment that we meet with when we come in can either amplify and support and develop our natural perceptions or blind us and impair us and amputate and cause us to amputate our perceptions and cause us to doubt ourselves, which I believe is the greatest sickness of the world. And so the Intuitive Spark is written for two audiences. One, for parents who are raising children and to create a home that is fully supportive and conducive to their fullest flowering their fullest consciousness abilities. And two, for those who were not raised this way to give you tools to re parent yourself so that you gain back the access to your personal power. So it's really grounded in the intention of empowering and respecting and honoring our inner knowing and our ability to be directly informed energetically. All geniuses really, really affirm. My favorite story is Albert Einstein was once asked, how did you discover the theory of relativity? And he said I didn't look for it. I wasn't trying to find something I was enjoying and just relaxing and listening to my favorite piece of music and the entire thing dropped in. And that is a common story. That is a reflection of the power of intuition in the inner voice and how it can change the world. But we have to first allow it to be in our own world. And that is what the intuitive spark is about, creating the atmosphere that supports that.
So it is, as you're saying, it's vitally important for us as parents to really nurture and trust our intuition if we're going to guide our children.
Well, first of all, it is so important. Children, their first value system is shaped by their parents. And if the parents, first and foremost, are not reflecting a connection to their own intuition, your children feel that disparity, it confuses them, but because they're so dependent on the parent for its survival and its security and its nurturing, that the child would rather, in most cases, not always, unless we have a really strongly conscious child, in most cases, will throw away their natural knowing to stay connected to their parent, if that's what is necessary. But if the parent is naturally connected and respectful of their inner knowing, they don't even really have to go out of their way. The children will energetically feel that and resonate with that and reflect that. And that's the natural way right.
Now. They're born super intuitive.
They are totally born intuitive. You know, you will find this, especially when you have your own child. You'll be just thinking of something and your child is tracking you. Years ago, I remember when my daughter was three, I was making oatmeal thinking, I want to go out and shop today and just have a day off. And I just barely thought the thought. And my 3 year old turned to me and said, I'm going with you.
Oh my gosh.
As though there was no separation between my thought and her receptivity. Made me laugh. I said, okay. I was impressed. That is how tuned in we as human beings can be. So we don't want to scramble those beautiful circuitry, that beautiful circuitry to our own higher self by when your child says, you know, I have a feeling, you listen, you respect it and you say, okay, well, we'll hold that in mind instead of, no, that's not real, which is so. It's such an automatic response. And I work with people and have my whole life. The number one comment I hear with people is, I did not have a home that supported my inner knowing. I was not allowed to be that aware. I was not encouraged. It was forbidden. And that is so sad. And has wreaked havoc on people's lives as a consequence. Havoc. It makes people doubt themselves. They grow up into adults at second guess and give their power away and follow others instead of leading their lives. And it makes us really, at the worst case scenario, people become sheep being really quite led to the slaughter. So the most empowering thing that a parent can do for your children is recognize them as conscious, intuitive, well informed beings and respect that and model that so they develop a way to express that knowingness in the world in a way that feels grounded and sane and supportive to them.
So how do we as parents, it sounds like we just kind of need to get out of the way in many ways and just like space. How do we do that?
Well, I'd say what I'd say first is to check in and ask yourself what your own attitudes are about intuition. And the first one that I encourage you to incorporate is that this is a wonderful endowment. Birds have radar, whales have sonar, we have our intuition, our vibes. We can track energy just as sharply as any other living being in nature. And so let's have a very positive, supportive understanding of how. Intuition is so natural. And it doesn't come in words, it doesn't come in pictures necessarily, but it always comes in the form of energy and feeling. So with your kids, notice first how you're feeling. I had a wonderful funny story I put in my book where my daughter in third grade, her teacher said, I have to share with you a funny story. The kids are being so awful. I put them all in timeout today. I could not get them to behave. And when they were sitting there in the corner, your daughter whispered left and then whispered right. And the kids shook their head. And then she stood up and straightened her dress and came up to me and said, teacher, we're all feeling really happy in the corner. And when you're feeling better, would you like to join us?
I love that story.
Three years old, because she was very aware. It's like, it's not us, it's you.
Wow.
And so the teacher laughed and said it was right. So I had to put myself in timeout. It wasn't them. And so have a sense of humor with your kids and say, well, what are you feeling? Instead of just telling them what to do, say, what are you feeling? Help your kids give voice to their own feelings and put importance on it.
Right? And how amazing for your child, for your daughter too, like the confidence that she had in herself to know that and then be willing to stand up for that. It's just like such a beautiful story.
I have two grown daughters, 23 and 24 now, both doing holding in beautiful intuitive practices. One, working with teenagers who have had really traumatic life experiences. So these tools can cultivate in your children a gorgeous knowing of who they are that does give them an innate sense of confidence and inner self esteem because they are being and reflecting their authentic self instead of trying to seek approval.
Sorry, go ahead.
I just said this is the way of the world now that we as parents can have such an influence just by holding the space for our own.
And then it really helps us learn and connect to our child's actual divine essence, their soul, rather than our expectations or our thoughts about what they need to be.
Absolutely. So it's definitely a different type of child parenting. You don't mold your child into fitting in. You empower your child to hold their own no matter where they are.
And.
To connect with life from a place of really liking and respecting who they are, rather than seeking their identity from the approving eyes of who knows what. So, you know, it's simple. There's just some simple techniques. One of the things I gave my kids is always the conversation. Whenever they came to me asking for something, I would say, well, what does your spirit say? Put your hand on your heart and let's ask your spirit before you ask me and then we'll talk about it.
Wow, so you started that right away. I mean, as soon as they do.
Wow, from two years old before, I would say, before you check in with me, let's check in with your spirit, because though your body and your little brain are 2 years old, your spirit is timeless. And then I would suggest to my kids, if they didn't feel comfortable, if they were having some kind of an anxiety, if they were having some kind of a need for boundaries or protection, or they needed to say, this isn't feeling right to me, all they had to do was squeeze my hand. They never had to explain, they never had to justify, they just had to squeeze my hand. And a hand squeeze to me was enough said. Let's not sit and figure out if this is real. Let's just step away. And so by squeezing my hand, it helped them get in touch with that feeling. And now they can step away without squeezing my hand if something isn't right. They're both very comfortable in saying to anybody, including authority figures, you know what? I'm not feeling that this resonates for me.
Wow.
It'S not confrontational. It's not belligerent. It's just the truth. And so they've had great. They have both received great respect from their elders growing up.
That's so amazing. And it's not like they're throwing a temper tantrum, like you said. It's very respectful. And it's just like, this is not for me.
When my daughter was in eighth grade, they had a new principal come to their school, this very small private school. And he immediately enforced all kinds of rules because he had just come from a military school in the neighboring state. And the first thing he said was, you can't color your hair, and you can't wear this and that. And she put on a pink wig and made an appointment in his office. And she said, while I respect that you want to bring some semblance of order, there are some of us who are very artistic and creative, and our hair color doesn't. Doesn't challenge order. But your rule represses my spirit. And if this goal is about me being my best me, then I don't want to conform to your military rules, because that's not who I am. And do you know, he renounced the rule. Wow. He said, I hear what you're saying, and I appreciate it. And he. He discounted the role. He took it away. She never wore her pink wig again. So it was a very respectful exchange when she was 14.
That's so great. And it's not like, you know, I know that a lot of people. And I could. Even as you're just saying it, it sounds so beautiful, and I have goosebumps and, like, tears, and it just feels right. But in our culture, I know that there's, like, a lot of people are like, oh, our children are going to end up being spoiled brats and narcissistic and just whatever. It doesn't sound like.
That's not been my experience, because I have, you know, I have never supported disrespect. And it's sort of like saying to your child, well, your spirit and my spirit have equal respect in this house. And if you're being disrespectful or if you're, you know, if you're asking for something in a way that I can't. Can't hear, then I'm not going to give it importance. You know, narcissism is when you just throw things at your kids because you don't want to be present to them. That's how narcissism develops. You either indulge them or you try to control them. That develops narcissism. Being present and really being interested in who they are as beings and being authentic with them. You know, I have had plenty of opportunities with my kids to say, you know what? I really don't know. So what we're going to do is we're going to just kind of follow this is. We're going to follow my vibes. And if something shows up that it's not working, then we're going to change it. But for right now, this is what we're going with. So, you know, can I go do this? I will say, well, I'll tell you what that does. I don't know why that doesn't feel great, but for now, because it doesn't, we're going to go with it. Even though I know it angers you. I'm sorry, I do not have narcissistic children. They're very conscientious, they're very interested in the world. So great, I can hear those. I really want people to know this is not about putting your children up on a pedestal. It's about just respecting their intuitive sense like you would any other. Don't make it extra special. Don't say, oh my God, you have a vibe. And now we're going to stop the world because that's not natural. Just say, okay, we'll pay attention to that. That's it. Be sort of in your stride and matter of fact.
So great. And it's such a. I mean, I feel like my whole life's purpose has been coming back to this, of trusting myself. So imagine g your child that from the beginning of what does your heart tell you is just awe inspiring.
Well, you know, and it actually does develop some pretty extraordinary human beings that are not fighting and struggling to get back to their natural self, but are really more interested in creating and contributing to the world. Because one of the byproducts of intuition that is just unavoidable is you really begin to recognize how you affect everyone and how we are all interconnected. So those who have a strong connection to their intuitive nature also have a strong connection to their heart and to their desire to make the world a better place because it's the gift that keeps on giving. So you develop globally conscious citizens who are really part of solutions instead of those who have the problems.
Right. That's so great. And they just don't spend their life force.
Yeah. Trying to wear a pair of shoes that doesn't fit or be into an identity that isn't them. And then Suffering with rebellion and depression and anger and frustration, and their whole life will implode unless your life is founded on your authentic nature. Your intuition is the voice of your authentic nature. And it's not like my intuition is the way. It's my intuition is the way for me. So great.
And I love the mutual respect too, that your spirit, that really as these beings come into the world, that their spirit is just as important as mine. And I'm not here to control them. I'm here to support them and honor and help them flourish.
And the best way to do that is do that for yourself, because children will do what you do. It's interesting because I hear my daughters coaching others or motivating others. If I ever hear it, I hear them saying the same things I used to say and still do, but they're saying it in their voice, in their inflection, in their words, in their way, with their anecdotes. And so your children really do. Even the most rebellious children still embody and respect and carry what they've gotten from their parents.
So the biggest way to support our children's intuition is to be a demonstration.
Right? Live as authentically as you can, because they will feel the disparity. I have a story in my book, the Intuitive Spark, where a woman was just absolutely appalled that her son got busted for pot. Now, of course, the laws are easing around that this is back in the day a bit. But I'm just shocked and appalled that that was like, well, why you both are addicts. Wow. Why would you be shocked and appalled that that would be his way of managing his. His life the way you do? Only yours is his dad workaholic, your alcoholic. But it's the same frequency. It's the same checkout. So don't go after it like, how dare you? Or how could you? It's like, go back at them with, what are we all doing? Maybe we all need to react, reflect on that and see if we could do something different. Because it doesn't feel right.
Right.
And that's how they yield.
In your book, you had. I don't remember the specifics of it, but I remember that there was something with your daughter was maybe a little bit. She wouldn't go to sleep at night or something. And you and your husband were going through renovations in the house and had to work out something.
We were so stressed out and never mind that we would show up for her is, you know, the happy parents. She felt it. And until we could get grounded. She couldn't get grounded. She's the truth serum.
Right.
Your kids. There always will be. Especially if you have more than one. If you only have one, that one. If you have more than one, plan on someone in the family, one of your children being the truth serum. And the truth serum is often considered the troublemaker because they are not cooperating with the collective farce, the story of where it is all okay. They are the one that acts out and brings it up to me. They are the best one in the family. The black sheep is actually the savior. Really, truly, if you could allow for that and really begin to say, you know, to treat your children with respect is to hide nothing. Okay.
Yep. Beautiful. And then our children are a reflection or they'll show up if we are hiding something. Right. Or trying to hide something.
And if your kids say, I feel like you're hiding something, feeling own up to it instead of saying, how dare you? Yeah, Love.
It is just like a beautiful. It just feels like a beautiful partnership that you have with your children. You know, obviously there are going to be challenges, but it just seems very harmonious.
Well, what it creates is a safe home because it is grounded in authenticity and. And truth. And the truth is sometimes my vibes and your vibes don't match up. So we're going to just respect that. And as a parent, my vibes are going to prevail. But I'm open and I'll admit a mistake if it turns out that my choice was a mistake.
Right. So that's how you kind of deal with, you know, different vibes and different intuition, how you kind of navigate it, that yours is.
Well, as the parent, you should say, well, since I'm the responsible and we're going to go with my choice. But I hear yours. I hear it. And I'm receptive. But for now, I'm going to go with this. But I'm receptive.
So you are not shutting them out. It is not an absolute. No, it is a. I am willing to play and dance with you.
Right. Very cool.
So what do you think some of the obstacles as parents? Because it sounds like in order for us to really support our children, it is a parent's job. What are some of the obstacles that we face as parents to really connect and live an authentic life?
Well, I think the most important thing is to trust that if your child is coming through you, you're the best parent possible and just reflect and honor that in yourself, that we have a sole agreement. And so I'm up for the job and I can be a really good parent. So you trust yourself from that vantage point and then notice where you, as a parent, might want or need some help just to manage your own life. Being a calmer oasis, manage your own addictions, Manage, you know, address and get real honest about where am I in life? Am I overwhelmed? Am I in addictions? Am I running away from my own needs? Well, you know what? That's not going to be a very good environment for my kids. So maybe this child coming in is my greatest ally to make my own life work better. Slow down. Take moments for yourself because you're the well and they need to drink from your well. Don't be the sacrificial lamb parent. Be the one that says, you know, I need to rejuvenate so that I can be. I have energy to give you and love and support. I just need a few minutes of my own time. Don't speak to your child in the third person. Don't impersonate. Don't say, mommy needs. Say I need. This is something a lot of people do that creates a separation like, I'm not going to. Don't speak to your child in the third person because then you set up a role instead of, hey, it's me. And don't speak for your child. When they're asked something from others. Give them the space and the time to find their own words and have a relationship with them that you reflect that. I like you. And yeah, if you're a wild, crazy, demanding kid, I like you. But I have to have a little bit of time off from you. I can't keep up. Not about you. It's about me. Don't try to make them submit because that's your parenting style that you were raised with. One, the children coming in these days, they're much too conscious. And two, you won't have any fun. You won't have any fun. So really respect it as the most incredible collaboration and know that the longer it goes, the richer it becomes. My adult relationships with my daughters now are the richest that I can even. I just so love and they want to be around me. They both moved away and just moved back. I know. I'm so honored.
That's so sweet. Yeah. For most people, they are running away from their parents.
Yeah.
That's so great. So how do we create? I know in your book you just talk about creating a sacred home for our family, from the energy to the clutter to everything in our home. Can you just talk about the importance of the vibration of our home?
I do think that it's important for you to just take a very clear, objective look at the vibration of your home. When you walk in the door, are you happy to be there? Can you relax? Is it bright? Is it pretty? It doesn't have to be neat as a pin, but is it welcoming? Is it light? Is it clear? Open the windows. Let the sun in. Play music. Get rid of what takes up energy but doesn't contribute. Be really discriminating. Don't let anything in your threshold cross your threshold that doesn't uplift, doesn't feel good. Get rid of it. My sister gave me a Salvador Dali painting. Very expensive, but it was a bummer. It was a downer. It was negative. It was suffering. I sold it at a yard sale. Every time we all walk by it, we are like, ew. I thought, well, I'll make someone's day. I don't want to go to the art market. It's not my strength. It was probably a bit impulsive of me, but I've never thought a moment about it since.
That's so great.
So just. Does it lend itself to a good energy? Fresh flowers, some pretty music, comforting corners. Just create that, right?
And that gives our children a sense of safety and order.
In my home, we had an old Victorian in Chicago. We still do, But I created this beautiful basement that was just like it. Never really needed to be cleaned up too much. There are toys. Could be everywhere, but not filth, not food. But they're toys. They could go and play, they could get lost in it. But it didn't take up every inch of my home. And I put comfortable places for me to go hang out down there with them. I'd read a book while they'd be running around. So I was in their space, but it was their space.
Awesome. Very cool. So what about it? Sound. I just get the experience that you've had a lot of, like, play and wonder and surprise and adventure.
Can you just. I did. That's very true. A lot of people notice that. First of all, I have a very well developed inner child. My inner child is very healthy and very happy and very interested. And I have a very playful nature with my kids. Not everybody does. Maybe you're not quite there, but they can make you laugh. So see them not as just a responsibility, but see your kids as friends and little beings coming into your experience to lift you up. I will not deny that they are high maintenance, but they come with such richness that it's a garden you get fed on every effort into. That garden feeds you forever. And I just think that in the past, our children were viewed as something that adults owned. You're my. Instead of. You're these beautiful beings. You're my possessions. And I just think that sometimes we fall into that without really recognizing it. And as long as you know, I love from Gibran, from the prophet, your children do not belong to you. They belong to the future. And they are like arrows that spring forth from you. You cannot own them. And I feel and believe that with my whole heart and soul.
Yeah, that's beautiful. And I think it takes less pressure. It takes the pressure off us as parents, too, and really allows us to be able to play and nourish and go on adventures with our children as we don't own them.
Right. And let's make that a priority. You don't have to stop your life. And in fact, I don't recommend it. A lot of people who stop being themselves to be parents end up very resentful when their children start stepping away. So it will only backfire on you later. It's a balance and it's a sloppy balance. But if you generally have the best of intentions and you're generally committed to that direction, then it will be fine. It works out. We are just as manic and crazy a family with family stuff as any. But what we have fundamentally in this family, and especially my daughters, is they have an innate and deep trust in themselves and in our relationship. And that is like, you know, very not as common as it should be. And I have trust as a parent in them. I know that they are well anchored to their deep sense of inner values and their deep sense of their own authentic nature. And so I don't have to manage out of fear what they are doing.
A lot of stresses for mothers I see and just talk to. It seems like a lot of them are managing, trying to manage their right.
And a lot of what they are doing is putting on their children their own fears and anxieties. How many times I see the kids just fine mother going crazy, right? Don't do this, don't do that. You go take a chill pill.
So what kids do you have for a new mother or a mother to stay connected to her spirit as she navigates the transformation of birth, rebirth into motherhood?
Well, you know, I think the thing that you need to do is let this whole motherhood thing be something that invites you to be the best citizen of the planet for yourself. You can be. So be respectful of your own needs, Be honest about taking time for yourself, have good boundaries, and that's something that's really hard for mothers to learn. Know your true yes and no and just say it's my true yes or that's my true no. Talk about your vibes comfortably. My spirit says, or my vibes say, or this is what my inner voice says. Whatever language feels right for you. And teach them that inner language so they have it and you will organically find your rhythm and way. Because it is natural. We didn't have to teach our kids to see or hear or speak. They come about it naturally.
They are trusting in the process. Beautiful. So I have one more question. What do you think that our children need from us the most as parents?
Humor.
Nice.
I do. I think it should be humor. Sense of humor. A sense of laughing through life instead of suffering through it.
That's awesome. I have never heard that. And I have a very playful spirit as well, so I love that.
Yeah, humor. Just have fun with them. Enjoy life with them.
Fantastic. I love it.

Right. And let's make that a priority. You don't have to stop your life. And in fact, I don't recommend it. A lot of people who stop being themselves to be parents end up very resentful when their children start stepping away. So it will only backfire on you later. It's a balance and it's a sloppy balance. But if you generally have the best of intentions and you are generally committed to that direction, then it will be fine. It works out. We are just as manic and crazy a family with family stuff as any. But what we have fundamentally in this family, and especially my daughters, is they have an innate and deep trust in themselves and in our relationship. And that is like, you know, very not as common as it should be. And I have trust as a parent in them. I know that they are well anchored to their deep sense of inner values and their deep sense of their own authenticity, nature. And so I don't have to manage out of fear what they're doing.
A lot of stresses for mothers I see and just talk to. It seems like a lot of them are managing, trying to manage their stress.
Right. And a lot of what they are doing is putting on their children their own fears and anxieties. How many times I see the kids just fine. It's a mother going crazy. Don't do this, don't do that. You go take a chill pill.
So what tips do you have for a new mother or a mother to stay connected to her spirit as she navigates the transformation of birth rebirth into motherhood?
Well, you know, I think the thing that you need to do is let this whole motherhood thing be something that invites you to be the best citizen of the planet for yourself. You can be. So be respectful of your own needs. Be honest about taking time for yourself. Have good boundaries. And that's something that's really hard for mothers to learn. Know your true yes and no and just say it's my true yes or that's my true no. Talk about your vibes comfortably. My spirit says, or my vibes say, or this is what my. My inner voice says, whatever language feels right for, for you, and teach them that inner language so they have it. And you will organically find your rhythm and way because it Is natural. We didn't have to teach our kids to see or hear or speak. They come about it naturally.
Trusting in the process. Beautiful. So I have one more question. What do you think that our children need from us the most as parents?
Humor.
Nice.
I do. I think it should be humor. Sense of humor. A sense of laughing through life instead of suffering through it.
That's awesome. I have never heard that. And I. I have a very playful spirit as well.
So I love that. Yeah, humor. Just have fun with them. Enjoy life with them.
