What to do when you're having a bad day
30 Mar 2021 · 0 min
In this solo episode of the Mama Goddess podcast, host Alexandra J. Johnson shares her personal process for navigating a "bad day" as a mother and caregiver. She begins by emphasizing the importance of physical self‑care—checking nutrition, sleep, movement, and biometric data (e.g., Oura ring heart‑rate variability and temperature). She then moves to emotional self‑check‑ins, describing her current struggle with weaning her 3½‑year‑old daughter and the feelings that arise. Alexandra outlines concrete actions that help shift mood: moving the body, journaling, creating content, and sticking to routine self‑care tasks, while also allowing space for rest when needed. She introduces a fourth step—using the mantra “this too shall pass” and deliberately spotting moments of joy throughout the day to reframe the experience. Finally, she encourages listeners to treat challenging days as data for growth, avoid spiraling into a funk, and trust that tomorrow will feel better. The episode closes with love and blessings, inviting listeners to connect further with the Mama Goddess community.

Hey everyone, it's Alexandra. Hope you're having a great day and if you're not having a great day, this video for you. So what do we do when we're having a bad day or less than optimal day? We're not feeling super sparkly and awesome. So I'm just going to tell you how I approach that and how I approached it today because today did not feel super awesome for me. So I'm just going to kind of process, go through my process for you and then maybe they'll. So we'll give you some insights and maybe help you navigate some of those days that don't feel all amazing and unstoppable. So the first thing is your self care. So checking into your nutrition, your sleep, your movement, like how are you doing on those things? Because that's so important and I think we can sometimes not look at those things and they really do drive our days. They're such important factors in having an awesome day. So for me there's, I am currently on a second day of a water fast. So I. That's mostly nutritionally. I know that I'm just, you know, detoxing and just going through some stuff with that process. So I had that. And then movement, I'm doing great on my movement. My sleep, my sleep was actually amazing last night. My heart rate variability was like off the charts and my resting heart rate was so super low. So that was all great. I did have a higher temperature. So that also tells me. And I track all of this on my aura ring too. So that higher temperature tells me that my body is definitely working through something. So I knew that about my day. That's just kind of where I am on the self care. So when you're having that challenging time, look to your self care. Where can you up that? See where you maybe. Yeah. Where you may be struggling, where you need to put a little bit more work. And then the second thing is emotionally. So checking in to see how you feel emotionally, how does your heart feel, what thoughts are going through your head, what you know, what's triggering you? Because a lot of times we can just go through our days and we feel like we're having a bad day but we're not realizing that we're believing negative thoughts or we're just having some emotional Stuff come up. So I think this is really good to just check in and just bringing awareness sometimes will be enough for us to shift it and to feel a little bit better. So for me today, the emotional, the emotion thing that I'm feeling today is my daughter is three and a half and I am ready to be done nursing and she is not. So it just feels like emotional for me around, like, I. I know that we need to start doing that. We need to do that because it. I just feel ready and it is time. She's had an awesome three and a half years. I feel very grateful and proud that I've been able to give that to her. And yeah, it just feels. It brings up emotions for me. So it's like, is this going to be my last kid? You know, just not wanting to see her not want to give it up and then having to kind of deal with those. Her emotions as well. So. So I feel emotional about that. So I know that that's impacting fasting this yada yada. So that's it. Physical, emotional, and then checking in with, what do you need to do today? Because a lot of times when we don't feel great, we won't do things that we normally do that keep us plugged in and stay sparkly. So for me, this. That means, yeah, like sometimes. Sometimes you do just need to have a day to chill and just don't do anything. But I found the more that I do things that make me feel good, I actually generate those feelings. So for me, it meant moving my body. It meant doing this video because I said I was gonna do a video. It meant doing my journaling. It meant doing my self care, doing all of those things. And it definitely shifted for me. I definitely had moments where I was like, ugh and good, and moments where I was irritated with the kids. And I was just like, hey, guys, I'm just grumpy today. Just tired and grumpy. And I'm sorry. But just acknowledging that is also helpful for the people around you because, you know, being grumpy is not super awesome for other people either. So that is doing your. Doing the things that help you stay plugged in. So showing up and doing those things, that doesn't mean that you can't have a day in bed if you're, you know, you can do that, but it just means doing the little things that, you know, give you joy and meaning and purpose and create health for you. So that is kind of my three steps. I'm gonna add a fourth step is really Checking in. I just lost my train of thought. Oh, okay, I got it, I got it. I'm fasting, so be nice. The fourth thing is sometimes you do all of these things and you just still are like, ugh. And that's where I just use the mantra, this too will pass, this two will pass. And I just really look at the whole day because it's not. When we have like a rough day, it's not usually the whole day in every moment. So pick out those moments where you feel really great and where you had like a lovely connection with your kids or, you know, you actually did your self care. Like find moments to be proud of throughout the day and then just let that be. You know, just the. It's. Just let it be and more than likely you will wake up tomorrow and feel better. So using all of your not so great days as data to see how you can continue to get better and better so that you don't spiral out. I used to have bad days. It would lead to thoughts and then, and then I would just be like stuck for, you know, years ago that it was just, you know, you kind of get in a funk. So don't allow yourself to get into a funk and take action while accepting your emotions and your feelings and all of that. So those are the steps for you. Check in with your physical, your self care, your emotional and you know, do what helps you stay plugged in. That, you know, gives you energy and vitality even if you feel like, don't feel like it. And this too shall pass. So allowing it to be what it's going to be and knowing that, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna wake up feeling much better tomorrow. One, I'm gonna eat and that will help. Two, I just know that this is part, part of the process, especially when we are trying to evolve and trying to grow, that you're gonna have less than awesome days. So that's it for today. I hope you have a great one and if you don't have a great one someday, that you use these tools and I'm sending you lots of love and blessings.
