11 Bible Verses Every Christian Should Know To Help Them Hate Evil

Greg Ryan walks through eleven Bible verses on hating evil, not people. He identifies the enemy as the spiritual thief who steals, kills, and destroys, and argues that fearing the Lord leads Christians to hate evil and engage in spiritual warfare. The practical call: renew your mind, take active authority, and pray continually.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Spending time in the Word of God is the best way to spend time with God. Welcome to No Doubt, No Fear, Only Believe podcast, where we will encourage, inspire, and empower you to live your best life in Christ. Here's Greg.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Well, I'm going to continue to talk about is it okay to hate evil, and I want to get 11 scriptures, 11 Bible verses that I've come up with to give us a little more of an understanding. Because in the next episode or two, probably I may conclude this one in the next episode, but if you want to see what I started in the beginning I'm going to link up to that in this note somehow. I'll figure it all out. But we have got to get a handle on evil, and to do that, we just got to know that we have an enemy. And I think the first scripture that I want to talk about, and it's in John 10:10, where Jesus describes the punk, is what I like to call him. But it says, the thief does not come except to steal to kill and to destroy, but I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly. So there you get a radical difference between abundant life and the thief. The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. And my question to you, just straight out of the gate, is why would you want to be associated with somebody whose job is to steal, to kill, and destroy. And the only answer I can come up with is deception, is you are deceived. You think that there's nothing to all that. You think it's a bunch of hooey. And you know, I can't change how you think. I just know by my testimony what the Bible says. And faith comes by hearing, hearing by the word of God. And it says also my favorite scripture, and this isn't part of the 11, Bible verses, but it's Revelation 12:11. And they overcame him, which is the punk, which is the thief, by the blood of the Lamb, by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. So the way we overcome the punk is through the blood of Jesus. He's already died, so that's already taken care of. Our testimony— we've talked about this multiple times— our testimony is our testimony. We don't have to worry about that. And the sacrificial lifestyle— we did not love our lives to the death. We have to learn to die to self. That is an incredible hard lesson to learn because everybody is concerned with themselves, everybody, and I'm no exception. Well, the second scripture that I wanna talk about is the fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate. That's found in Proverbs 8:13. And this is wisdom talking, and we talked about that in the previous episode, but wisdom is saying, "I hate evil." Wisdom, God, you and I, and the reason that they hate evil is because it comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. So we have got to put a label on evil, and if you see any stealing, any killing, or any destroying, That's evil, and I don't care how you package it up. I don't care what it is. Stealing, killing, and destroying is evil. The next scripture, this kind of goes hand in hand, but it says, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. That's Proverbs 1:7. We watch a couple videos or we go to read a couple of books and we think we've got this all figured out. Or you've been studying the Bible for 10 years, and so you don't need any more instruction. But wisdom and the Proverbs is saying that the fear of the Lord is the beginning, the first step. That is where we need to start. And so by the reverent fear that we've talked about is that we respect God, we put God first. And in order to be able to hate evil, we got to know whose side we're on. We got to know that God is love, and we're going to talk about that in another episode. But we got to— we have got to know that fools despise wisdom. And I don't want to be a fool, because a fool says in his heart there is no God. I don't care what side of the fence you come in on, you have got to know— if you look at this world, you got to know it just didn't happen. Some intelligent mind or being creator put this all together, and it wasn't you and it wasn't me. All right, the next scripture: You who love the Lord, hate evil. He preserves the souls of his saints. He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked. That is Psalm 97:10. Again, we have got to learn whose side we're on. We have got to pick a side. We've talked about this before. If you love the Lord, you have to hate evil. We got— we're defining who evil is. The evil's the punk. We already know it. This is more of a just a summary of multiple sessions that I've had on these podcasts. The fourth scripture that I want to talk about: let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil, cling to what is good. That's Romans 12:9. We are to abhor, we are to hate what is evil, and we are to cling to what is good. And Jesus said himself, when the guy came and ran at him and fell at his feet and called him good teacher, and Jesus said, hey, why you call me good? There's only one person good, and that's God. So we have got to understand that God is good all the time. When we use words like good and love, that is God. We've got to get this association. We got to break down some of these strongholds that we've got in our head. We have never to hate God's kids.
We—
if you can see people, you are not to hate them. The fifth scripture I want to talk about is, hate evil, love good, establish justice in the gate. It may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph. That's in Amos 5:15. And again, we are to hate evil. This is Old Testament, but it's still appropriate. The word of God, Jesus was the Word. And remember, this is how I start every episode off, is that the Word was with God and the Word was God and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The Word of God, Old Testament, New Testament, it still represents Jesus. It's still— Jesus is the Word. You don't have to understand all of it just to accept it. That's called faith. Faith comes by hearing, hearing by the Word of God. That's why I constantly use the Bible. And I just wanted to do something in this episode a little bit different. I want to go specifically with these Bible verses because I don't think we can get enough Bible, and I just want us to get used to getting after life and the Bible. The next verse I want to talk about, because I'm going to end up messing up the numbers, I know I am. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. And that is Ephesians 6:12. We've talked about this multiple times when we're talking about spiritual warfare, when we're talking about who we're battling, who we're supposed to be kicking in the teeth. Satan is in control of these four entities: the principalities, the powers, the rulers of the darkness of this age, and the spiritual host of wickedness in heavenly places. We, when we hate evil, we're hating these four entities. We're not hating people. Now, people are being deceived, people are being misled, people are dividing, other people, and you've just got to look past that. You've got to look at people like God looks at you and I, with love, knowing that these people are deceived. And heck, we've talked about this before, you and I are deceived. We have got to understand that if we're not constantly— and no one can be constantly in the Word of God all the time, so there's going to be some filtering that we've got to use that is not always biblical. So we've got to accept the fact that we may be deceived in some areas and let's just dig into the Bible and find out how we can line up those areas to our life. And then that way we'll break these strongholds that Satan has put up, or that we put up ourselves, or family or loved ones have done before. And we've called them agreements, we've called them planting the wrong seed. All of those things are appropriate when you start thinking about all of these things that are in your mind. Romans 12:2, that didn't make the list, but do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may know what is the the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. So we have got to cleanse our mind, and we just got to believe, and we've got to understand that we don't have it all figured out, and it's okay. It's okay to just keep trying and not have it all figured out. The next scripture I want to talk about is found in Matthew 11:12: And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. This, I think, begins to get us into the action scriptures, kind of the warrior scriptures, that Jesus said, hey, it's going to be a battle. And the kingdom of God, God's way of doing things, entering into God's way is gonna take some effort. And we're gonna have to violently go at this thing. And that don't mean with other people. Again, we're fighting the punk. And it says that if you submit yourself to God, resist the devil, and then he will flee. We have got to kick him out and we got to keep him out every day. It's kind of like taking a bath. You can't just take a bath and be done with it. You can't tell your spouse or loved ones that you love them one time and think it's over. You've got to continually put those words into their ears and you've got to put these words into your heart. And so we're going to move on with the next scripture and it's found in Psalm 110:1. The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand till I make your enemies your footstool. And again, we defined our enemies, which is principalities, powers, rulers, and heavenly host of wicked— or spiritual host of wickedness. So those four, we are to take our authority in the name of Jesus. And being a son or daughter of God, we have got to come against these spiritual hosts, these principalities. We've got to figure out how to do that, and that's why we're here. We're not just here telling you, oh, you do this and this and this and these 4 steps and you'll have this all figured out. This is a daily thing, and it is not by might nor by power, but it's by God's Spirit. It's using the Holy Spirit, it's using the Word of God, it's using Father God, it's using all our spiritual weapons, and we just humble ourselves and we're gonna kick the snot. Out of the punk. The next scripture is Hebrews 1:13, which goes in line with Psalm 110:1. But to which of the angels said he at any time, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool? And this was the writer saying how much more important is Jesus than any of the other angels. Jesus was told, hey, have a seat until I make your enemies your footstool. And I just believe that God is using you and I. He's using the people in the world, his church, his people, to bring this to pass. We need to start taking an active stand about fighting evil and destroying the works of the enemy. And the last scripture that I'm going to go— last Bible verse that I'm going to go over is found in 1 Corinthians. For he must reign until he has put all enemies under his feet. 1 Corinthians 15:25. Again, It's kind of saying the same thing where God told Jesus to have a seat. I just want you to know that we are in a battle until we get all of these punks under God's feet. And I, again, I want to encourage you, that starts with you and I. It starts really, it starts with you getting all your stuff taken care of and putting the word of God in your life and getting it in your heart and in your spirit and just let it take root and then just destroy the works of the enemy. Well, this was a little bit different. I just wanted to go over specific because this is a Bible study. This is a Bible podcast, so why would we not have Bible verses? And again, these were the 11 verses, and I'm gonna post them on the website, and you'll be able to download these. You can go by and get these. I just wanna make it a little bit easier for us to have these studies. I've been praying about how I can be a better help and a better service to you. And I think this is it. This is Bible verses, these 11 verses that we can just look at and read, and we can kind of get a hold of what God's trying to say on this. And we're not going to spend a lot of time with evil because we're not going to magnify evil. Evil is a punk. Evil has no place in the kingdom of God. But we have to know that our enemy's out there and our enemy wants to kick the snot out of us. So we just need to turn the tables. We need to start hating evil, not people, evil, and we need to bind it up. There's a lot of evil going on, and the Bible's pretty clear, says it's not going to get any better, but you and I can make it better in our world. And I want to encourage you, we're— I'm going to stop right there and let's pray. God, I thank you so much for your word. I thank you for your Bible. I thank you for your Holy Spirit. Jesus, thank you for coming. And living a life without any errors, without any sin, and dying a death that I deserve to die. God, I thank you. I— Father God, thank you for raising Jesus from the dead on the third day, and he is forever gonna be our King, our Lord, our High Priest. He is for us and not against us. God, you are for us and not against us. Help us to understand that. God, we thank you. We love you. We ask it all in Jesus' name. Amen. Well, thank you for being a part of this, and I look forward to visiting with you in the next episode.
