Do You Have A Different Spirit

Greg Ryan examines the biblical story of the twelve spies sent to scout the promised land in Numbers 13, contrasting Caleb's faith with the fearful majority report. Only about 17% of Christians possess the warrior spirit needed to trust God's promises despite obstacles like giants and fortified cities.

Welcome to episode 78.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Spending time in the Word of God is the best way to spend time with God. Welcome to No Doubt, No Fear, Only Believe podcast, where we will encourage, inspire, and empower you to live your best life in Christ. Here's Greg.
Welcome to episode 78. If this is your first time here joining us, welcome aboard. If you are a frequent flyer, welcome back, you fanatic. And I want to dive right into a question that I had kind of milling around in my head last night and then this morning, and kind of all of— a lot of the teaching that I've been doing, it's kind of driving me to one spot, and it's more of a warrior type of question, and it's, do you have a different spirit? And before you answer that, and I, I know you've heard the saying that I'm preaching to the choir, if you've listened to multiple episodes here and kind of enjoy the direction that I'm taking, then you're probably going to be able to answer in the affirmative that yes, I think I'm— I've got that different spirit, or I do have a warrior mentality. But if you're just joining, I want to encourage you to kind of look at— we're going to go to Numbers. One of the reasons I'm writing this is because I've talked in the past, the Christian walk is not easy, but it's simple. The only thing you really have to do is get into the Word and believe the Word. But we're dealing with in Numbers, and let me go read this real quick. This is when Moses sent the 12 spies. We've talked about this before, but Moses sent the 12 spies out to spy the land. Now, he did not send the spies out to give them a report whether or not we can take this land. He just wanted to go, you go look at the land that God has given us. His instructions were to bring back information, and I'm going to go to that real quick. And this is found in Numbers 13:1. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, send men to spy out the land of Canaan which I am giving to the children of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man everyone a leader among them. Now let's think about where the children of Israel are right now. They had just been released out of Egypt. They had crossed the Red Sea on dry ground. They had watched the Egyptian army be totally annihilated. And now they're told, hey, we're going into this promised land. This is the land. And, and God, you know, if you think about it, because God is—
this is—
the Bible is the is the perfect love story. It's where, you know, he created man to have a relationship with him, and then we fail. And then the whole rest of the Bible is his, his trying to get that relationship back. And we will eventually get that relationship back when the trumpet is sounded and God and Jesus comes back and lives with us forever and always. But right now we're in the midst of this battle. And I've said multiple times that life is not a game, life is a battle, and it's It's a battle to the death. The question that I've asked, you know, are you a warrior type? Are you willing to fight this thing out to the end? And we're gonna find out there's a percentage, as I was praying, this percentage is right at like 16.67% of the people that are gonna call themselves Christians that I think are gonna be the warrior types, that are gonna be the different spirit. And we're gonna get into where I get that number. But I just want you to think about for a minute where these people had come from, everything they had seen. And now we're sending out— and we're not sending out 12 random people from the children of Israel. We are sending out leaders. These are people that each tribe, so I guess hand-selected, or they, you know, they sent out 12 leaders from each one, from each 12 of the 12 tribes. So we're sending out quote, "the best of the best." God's ways are not our ways, and God's thoughts are not our thoughts. But I am a father, and I've got children, and I know, you know, when you start to give them a gift, you know, one of the reasons that giving is better than receiving is because it's that anticipation when you see, wow, I, you know, you can't— I kind of see God up there. It's kind of like Christmas, you know. I've been waiting to show you this land. That's flowing with milk and honey, you know. And he's fired up to show his kids this present that he's— has gotten wrapped up. And he tells them, hey, go out there, send 12 of the leaders out there, and I want you to go take a look at what I have for you.
You're—
if you're just here for the first time, I've got a different way of looking. I'm trying— I try to always remain biblical, but I just— I've got a different way of seeing things. And I just— as I'm As I'm thinking and I'm praying, you know, I see Father God from this— the standpoint of he's the perfect father, and he is coming to his children to give them this perfect gift that he's got with a land flowing with milk and honey. And he's ready to give them this gift. And so he sends out these spies, you know, kind of a pre— to get everybody fired up. You know, he's going to go send these 12 out so that they can bring back a report of everything that's in this land. And Moses, you know, after they talk about who each person was— and you can read that for yourself in Numbers 13— in Numbers 13:17, then Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, go this way into the south and go up to the mountains and see what the land is like, whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many, whether the land they dwell in is good or bad, whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or strongholds. Whether the land is rich or poor, and whether these— there are forests there or not, be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes. That's what Moses gave them to go spy out. I mean, you're sending spies out to get a, you know, kind of a recon, reconnaissance. They're going out there to spy it out. So that they can bring back and then maybe get the battle plans. You know, do we need to bring everybody in of the, you know, all the children of Israel to defeat these people, or do we just need to bring a few, a handful of people? You know, he sent the people out, they're gone out there to go look. Then we're going to see, they're going to come back, and we pick up the story in Numbers 13:25. And they returned from spying out the land after 40 days. Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the wilderness of Paran at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land. Then they told him and said, we went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless, the people who dwell in the land are strong. The cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak, the Amalekites, dwell in the land of the south, and the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains, and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan. I want you to stop there. They brought their report and they started talking, you know, and then they started going a little bit negative. They started going a little negative on them. And then Caleb picks up in 30 because, you know, they could feel Hey, nevertheless, you know, when you say nevertheless, you know, everything you said before, it's kind of like a but. But these people are huge. These things are— they live in fortified cities. So they're, they're going negative. And then Caleb quieted the people. This is in Numbers 13:30. Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it. And so Caleb tried to, you know, and I've talked about in a previous episode, Caleb was walking around with these guys, these 12 spies, and Caleb saw how they were going negative. He knew— I, I think Caleb knew, and Joshua, we're going to find out, is the other one. They knew that these guys were going to bring a bad report. And I don't know why, and I, you know, we— I guess we can ask Caleb and Joshua why they didn't speak first. But, you know, some people are more outgoing, and, you know, and some people are the quiet, strong, quiet type. And maybe that was Caleb and Joshua, but they, you know, they let these other yahoos talk first. And then in, in 31, but the men who had gone up with him said, we are not able to go up against the people, for we are— for they are stronger than we. And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, the land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the giants, the descendants of Anak, came from the giants. And we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, so we were in their sight. And I want to stop there. Again, this is just a horrible report. This has got the people all stirred up. And this is where I'm going to tell you where I get the 16.67%. It's coming up right now. I'm about to, I'm about to read what God says after he hears this. Now Again, I want you to go back to kind of how I started this podcast, this episode, and I had God kind of fired up about the gift he was going to give to these— to his children, you know. And again, I want to take it to a Christmas Day. If you've ever bought something, if you've ever anticipated your child opening a gift or getting a gift, and then they go, eh, it's all right, and you spent months getting it ready, or you spent, you know, a bunch of money from your hard-earned money to get your child this thing and they go, eh, or even worse, I hate it, why'd you buy me that, that stinks. And that's kind of the report that these guys got. Wait, this is horrible, what is God doing, he must be out of his mind. And I want to, I want to take you back, and again I'm going to have to— I just looked up and I'm, I'm seeing that I'm awful long on this podcast, so I'm probably going to I'm gonna finish this report on the next episode. I hate to kind of leave you hanging. I'm trying to keep this to 10 to 12 minutes, and I've got a little bit more to say. So just think about this. God has just heard, you know, God is with us all the time. He hears everything that we say. And God had sent these spies out. In my mind, he's kind of got, he was fired up to, you know, I've got this gift, and he sends these guys out there, and then these guys bring this report back. Well, that's enough. Let's pray real quick. I want to pray after, after every episode so we kind of just get you on your way. And I just think there's power in the mighty name of Jesus and in prayer. God, I thank you so much for sending your son to live a life I could not live and to die a death I could not die. And God, I thank you that you sent him. Jesus, I thank you that you came. And Holy Spirit, I thank that you're here. And I pray in the mighty name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth that you would strengthen the person listening to this episode right now. And you, whatever's going on in their life, Lord, their death and life is in the power of the tongue, and I curse anything that's coming from the enemy, and I release the life that's in the name of Jesus in their life. And I thank you, Lord. I thank you for, I thank you for the fanatic that's listening to this, And I thank you for everything you've done in my life, and I ask it all in Jesus' name. Amen. Well, thanks for listening, and I'll see you on the next episode.
