How King David Became a Mighty Man of Valor and War

David was called a mighty man of valor before fighting Goliath, having already killed a lion and a bear. While the Spirit of the Lord rested on David, it departed from King Saul, whose servants brought David to play harp and soothe his distressed spirit. The host urges listeners to keep showing up in daily duties and trust that small actions matter in God's plan.

Welcome to episode 314. I am going to talk about the difference between King Saul and King David, how they first came together in their relationship and how all of that played out, and what that really means for you and I going forward in this walk of faith that you and I are all in the middle of. But before we get into that, grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Well, I'm going to talk about King Saul and King David, and I want to just show you something that I saw in the Bible earlier this month, and it was— it's fascinating. And you may have already seen it. This is the first time that it really came to my notice, and I want to look at what happened with King Saul and what happened with King David and how all that played out. Now remember, in the previous episode, we talked about Samuel coming and anointing David, and he wasn't even invited to his anointing party. So King David is sitting out there with the sheep. Someone is going to be king in Jesse, his dad's family, one of his brothers. And lo and behold, it's him. And the one thing I want you to take from this, we know that King David died when he was right at 70 years old. When we look at the kingdom of God, the way God does things is from the end to the beginning. He's— God sees things from the end to the beginning. And God's way of doing things God's not caught in time, and so God sees all of these events happening. I, I don't even understand how he does it all, but he sees them all at the same time, and immediately he knows all of the things. I don't think God truly controls everything. I think he could, but I think he watches over his word to make that come to pass. How you and I deal with his word and whether we get involved or not, that's yours and my will. And if we want to enter into God's kingdom, and if we want to do things God's way and build his kingdom up, then we've got to get into his word and we've got to do it God's way. And that's why I'm here, and I want to just show you when King David was anointed, he goes back out into the field. David goes back to being a shepherd boy, and that's the thing I want you to see is David was still doing his job. Now he may have got a quote promotion in the spirit realm, but in the physical realm, he's still a shepherd boy. He's still young. He still doesn't have a palace. He's been anointed king, but he goes back out into the field and is watching sheep. And that's where we find him. We pick this up in the next verse. We see that Samuel has gone to Ramah. That was verse— 1 Samuel 16:13. And we're going to pick it up in 16:14. But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord trouble him? And Saul's servants said to him, Surely a distressing spirit from God is troubling you. Let our master now command your servants who are before you to seek out a man who is a skillful player on a harp, and it shall be that he will play it with his hand when the distressing spirit from God is upon you, and you shall be well. So Saul said to his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well and bring him to me. Then one of the servants answered and said, Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skillful in playing and a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech and a handsome person, and the Lord is with him. Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, send me your son who is with the sheep. And I want to stop there. That is 1 Samuel 16:14-19, and I want you to see that David is back out with the sheep, and there's something going on here. And when God anoints you, when God has something for you, he's going to make things happen. What you need to do is you just need to keep showing up. You need to keep showing up for work. You need to keep showing up doing what you're doing, and God will get in your way. God is always going to pay for whatever he orders, and if he doesn't order it, then you or I are left in this world by ourselves. So that's why I'm here. I'm just in this word and I'm trying to get you in this word. And this is what I'm seeing. I'm seeing King David, who's still a young lad out there with the sheep. He's been anointed king. So this is really— we could call him King David, but we still have King Saul. And we don't know from verse 13 to verse 14 when the Spirit of God left Saul. But we see in verse 12 or 13 when Samuel anointed David that the Spirit of God came on David and remained on David. So David has the Spirit of God on him. King Saul lost the Spirit of God. We don't know when, it doesn't tell us dates and times, so this could have taken years to happen, or this could have happened at the same time the Spirit of God came on David, it left King Saul. We don't know. All we can do is guess. What I want you to see, what's fascinating, is what the servant said. His servant said, hey, this is a distressing spirit. You need to have somebody play a harp to get rid of this. It is incredible that this servant would say that. And oh, by the way, David just happens to be able to play the harp with his hand. And the servant also said, and I don't know if it was the same servant or a different servant, but said that this is a mighty man of valor, a man of war. Now this is still the young lad who's still keeping the sheep, and he has not killed Goliath yet. So where they get this mighty man of valor and man of war, I'm believing— and we're going to find out in the next episode in chapter 17, that's where David kills Goliath— we're going to find out for sure about all of this giant slaying and this mighty man of valor and a man of war. But I believe— this is Gregology— I believe that David has already killed the lion and the bear that he talks about in the next chapter with King Saul. I want you to think about— and I never saw this— when Saul asks Jesse to bring David, we've got to remember that this is the king of Israel. So he's got a lot of subjects, he's got a lot of people coming and going. This is a busy man. This guy's got a lot of things going on. And I always thought that Saul knew David, and we're going to find out in chapter 17 that Saul didn't have a clue who David was. I could keep going, but I want these to be short. I want you to think about this. Let's stop right here. We're going to pick this up in the next episode. But I want you to think about this. Your life, it may seem like little small things that are insignificant, but these things are a big deal to God. Every little step you take, every move you make— I think that's a song— God is watching you. You are God's favorite. God loves you, and he is watching over you, and he's watching over his word. And if you commit yourself to get into God's way of doing things, God is going to allow you to bring his word to pass. And I just want to encourage you, it may not look like a lot, and it may not look like a lot's happening, but God has got something going on in your life. And just by faith in your heart, you just guard your heart and get into the word of God. And we're going to talk about this in the next episode. I want you to read 1 Samuel 16, and I want you to go through there, and I want you to kind of see the progression. David was anointed And then Saul lost his anointing, or the Spirit of God, and these servants called him out and actually picked, hand-picked King David out of everyone in Israel who could play the harp and was a mighty man of valor and a man of war who had never been to a battle. That's incredible. That's God's doing. That's God's favor. We're going to see this continue on in David's life. But I just wanted to remind you, we don't know that if David was 15 when he was anointed, or 13, or whatever age he was, a young teenager, we don't know how old he was when he killed the lion and the bear and when the Spirit of God left Saul. I think there was some things that happened in David's life. It may have taken a few years for all of this to happen, and then people started talking. Hey man, there's a little kid that killed a bear. Hey man, this little kid just killed a lion also. So there was talk around the town I believe that's kind of how it all happened, and David was singled out as being a mighty man of valor and a man of war because he could kill a lion and a bear with his hands. He's just a little old shepherd boy. Let's stop right there. God, thank you for your word. I thank you for your Holy Spirit. I thank you that you've given us this in writing so that we can get into your word and allow the word to get into us And Lord, help us to understand what it is you want us to know about this story and about how you do what you do in the spirit realm. God, we thank you, we love you, we ask it all in Jesus' name. Amen. Well, thank you for being a part of this, and I look forward to visiting with you in the next episode.
