What Died When Adam Ate The Forbidden Fruit?

Greg Ryan argues that when Adam ate the forbidden fruit, his spirit died, not his body or soul. Using 1 Thessalonians 5:23, he explains humanity as three parts: spirit, soul, and body. The Fall left humans spirit-dead, living only through their senses, until Christ's incarnation restored what was lost.
Welcome to episode 26. You know how it starts.
John 1:1, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Welcome to episode 26, and I want to get right into this. If this is your first time listening, I want to thank you for stopping by, and if you have listened to me in the past, thank you for your support. In the last episode, I talked about the gospel, and I felt so strongly about sharing the good news. I mean, it's all about Jesus died so that we could all live. And I, as I was sharing that, and I had to get it out, and I just wanted everyone— if you haven't heard episode 25, you can go back and listen to that. But I've been talking about sin in the previous episodes, and I just felt led— for a good churchy word, I just felt led that I needed to give the gospel and the good news in case someone hadn't heard it, or someone, one of y'all were listening and said, you know, I'm not sure. So now you can go back, you can be sure and know. But I want to— I want to go back to the Garden of Eden where Adam was told by God, you know, you can eat of any of the fruit. You know, the one rule God gave Adam, one rule, and he couldn't— he couldn't keep it. And so when it says all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, even Adam sinned with one rule. We've got 10 rules. Actually, there's, I think, 613 laws in the Old Testament. 613 things that we have to do in order to keep the whole law. So to think that you or I can do every day, never break one of those 613 laws, that's a little much to think. So that's why the Bible says all have sinned. But I want to go to— I want to go back to Genesis, and it's in one Actually, I want to go back to Genesis, and it is in Genesis 2:16 and 17. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden you may freely eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die. And the question I want to ask on that, with that word from God is, I— have you ever thought about— and I wish someone would have told me, you know, what died. And I, you know, if you, if you look at after he had bit the fruit, if you look at, you know, he was still— the, the body didn't die. His— Adam and Eve's body didn't die because they knew they were naked. So their body was still alive, and then they were afraid So their soul— if, if I define soul as your mind, will, and emotions— the soul did not die because they were afraid, you know, when they heard God and hid themselves. So the thing that died in Adam and Eve was their spirit man. And I, I kind of want to, in a— just to help you think of this, you know, you got to have some kind of little catchy phrase, but when Adam and Eve were created, they were spirit-led. And then when they bit the fruit, they were spirit-dead. So that's kind of— that's kind of a way that I can kind of remember, you know, they went from being led in the spirit. And that's, I believe, because they saw that— because you're three parts. And I think it's 1 Thessalonians, and I'll, I'll quote that. It's in 1 Thessalonians 5, I think it's, uh, it's verse 23. 1 Thessalonians 5:23. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. So there you, you see the three parts: spirit, soul, and body. He had no real awareness of his nakedness because he was so Spirit-led. And if you can kind of— if you think about how we are so, uh, fleshly or carnally led, you know, for a good church word or a good Bible word, is to be carnally minded is dead. I mean, that is just thinking in your five senses. If all you— if all you take in is what you see and what you hear and what you smell and what you taste and what you touch If you just use your 5 senses, that's what the Bible calls carnally minded. So if you're just thinking with what you can sense in the physical realm, then that Bible would call that carnally minded. But spiritually minded would be then to read the Bible, because the Bible is spirit. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. So the God and the Word is spirit, and it's life. I mean, the Word of God is spirit and life. God is a spirit. Spirit— the Holy Spirit is a spirit. So you get the idea. But to be spirit-led would be using your spirit man, because when, when he— Adam bit the fruit, the spirit man, I believe, died. Now God's got to kick in the plan to figure out how to get this spirit back to life. And that's where, over the next 4,000 years, we, we see God putting his plan into action. And in Genesis 3:14, that's where God then kind of put curses the serpent. And, you know, and I'll read this real quick. It says, so the Lord God said to the serpent, because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle and more than every beast of the field. On your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. And that was the prophetic— that was where God announced how he was going to defeat Satan. That is like the prophetic word, and he just spoke. And the way God works things is he says it, and then it just comes to pass. But this, because he gave his— and I don't want to get too deep in the weeds, and we'll start doing that because I want to kind of keep this with one thought. But God spoke everything into existence in Genesis 1. You know, he said, let there be light, and he spoke, let there be light, and then he saw the light. So that's how he created the world. He said it and then he saw it. And I've already talked about that in Genesis 1, but he also gave man dominion And once he spoke the word and gave man dominion, then God gave his dominion to man. And so we're going to get into that another episode, but once he gave his dominion to man and flesh and blood and spirit, soul, and body, or whatever, however you want to start thinking about this, is that once he spoke that dominion, then as a spirit, as God, he couldn't— he would have to go against his word to then say, ah, I forget it. I, I, you did, you screwed up, you didn't do what I told you to do, I'm taking it back. God is a God of his word. He did not take it back. He said, I'm giving you dominion. He didn't— we talked about it, it wasn't no if-then clause. He just said, you can have dominion. And Adam screwed it up, so he lost his dominion. And now God has to, has to put in process getting that dominion back. And over those 4,000 years, that's how Jesus ended up appearing. We're going to talk about that on a different podcast because this one's running longer than I, I wanted it to go. And I've told you I'm going to try to keep this to 10 minutes. But I want you to think about Adam. When Adam bit the fruit, something died, and I believe it's his spirit man, because we are spirit, soul, and body. And Adam was a spirit, soul, and body. There's three parts one person. And God is three parts: Father, Son, Holy Spirit. That's the Trinity. But there are three parts and it's one God. It's the same God. And, and you see a lot of these threes in, in the world. You, you've got like— let's just say water has got three parts. It's got a, it's got a gas, it's got a solid, and it's got a liquid state. So there's three parts, but water is all— like, if it's steam it's still water. And if it's an ice cube, it's still water in its solid state. And if it's, if it's water, you know, liquid state, it's still H2O. So you've got 3 parts, and we're gonna, we're gonna dig into that some more. But I just want you to kind of get a picture of Adam was 3 parts. Adam and Eve were 3 parts, and they were body, soul, spirit, soul, and body. And something died when they bit the fruit, because that's what the word of God said. In the day that you eat of this fruit, you shall surely die. Well, something did die, and so I believe what died was Adam's spirit man. So then we had to get Adam and Eve out of the garden because they were imperfect now. They were no longer perfect beings, and if they would have eaten out of the tree of life, they would have lived in that imperfection for eternity. And so God, in his grace and mercy, and he, he just said, look, get them out. It looked, it looked like a mean and cruel thing to do, but it was really loving and kind and merciful to get them out of the garden so that he could fix this, so he could fix this thing. And God is— his thoughts are not our thoughts, and his ways are not our ways. We just have to trust that God knows what he's doing. And I believe in spades he is incredibly loving and kind and knows and wants the best for you and I. So that's the God that I follow, and that's the God that I want to introduce you to through this podcast. But I want to, I want to stop there because I can take this to a whole different angle, and we'll probably pick that up on the next episode. I want to thank you for stopping by this podcast, and I want to encourage you to hit the subscribe button If you liked what you heard, and we will see you again tomorrow.
