What is the Most Harmful False Belief in the Church Today?

Greg Ryan argues that teaching God controls every detail of a believer's life is the church's most harmful false belief. It reduces Christians to puppets and denies genuine free will. Ryan contends God is King, not a puppet master, and people have real choice in their daily actions.
Welcome to episode 12. I want to get right into it with the Gospel of John chapter 1. 1.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Spending time in the Word of God is the best way to spend time with God. Welcome to No Doubt, No Fear, Only Believe podcast. Where we will encourage, inspire, and empower you to live your best life in Christ. Here's Greg.
Welcome to episode 12. I'm gonna dive right in today because I have an important question to ask, and, and it's based on— if you've listened to the previous episode, it's based on what I believe, and I want you to start thinking about what do you think is the most harmful false belief in the church today. Now I'm going to give you my answer, but I want to remind you that Jesus calls himself the King of Kings. So my take on his declaration makes you a king. And let's read Proverbs 25:2 to get this party started. It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter. And that's pretty much what this whole podcast is doing, is As I have told you before, I make a horrible Holy Spirit. Our job, I believe, as believers is to believe the word of God. I mean, I think that's where the name believers comes in at, is we need to read the word of God. You know, we're going to hear some things, you know, we're going to hear things from our pastors and our friends and our family, and some of it's going to sound right. But as a king, you need to search it out for yourself. You can't just take your pastor's word for it. You can't take your spouse's word for it, your friends, your your mama, your daddy, anybody. You've got to, as a king, you've got to search it out for yourself. And the reason you need to search it out is because when you stand before God, you are gonna answer for your life and your actions and how you appropriated the time God gave you and the talents and the things that God gave you. You're not gonna be able to fall back on what someone else thought. It's gonna— God's gonna say, yeah, but what did you think? And what did you— why did you think that? Now what I want, with all of that said, I want to introduce what I believe is the most harmful teaching right now in the body of Christ. And it, you know, and if, if you've got a problem, I just want you to think as you're driving or working out, I just want you to think about what it is. You probably already got it, that in your mind. But I believe the most the most harmful teaching is the teaching on the sovereignty of God. And just before we get all this started, I want you to— I want to give my definition of sovereignty. And here is how I define God's sovereignty: he is the ruler of all the universe, heaven and earth created, and he answers to no one. God does whatever God wants to do without asking for permission. Now, that's my definition. If, if sovereignty— if the sovereignty of God is he is above all, holding the universe in his hands, all of that, God is all of that. But the teaching that I want to take issue with is that God controls everything. That is such a damaging teaching if you believe that God controls everything in your life. You kind of get to a place where, what difference does it make? And if God— why did God do this to me? And instead of becoming a king, you're more like a Pinocchio. And God is— is that the guy's name is Geppetto, I think, Pinocchio's puppet master. You are nothing more than a puppet on a string, and God is the puppet master. And that is not— that is not my God. My God, it— he— my God is dangerous. My God is loving. He gave his creation— he gave you and I free will. God did not make you get up this morning. You got up. You, you chose to get out of the bed. I hope you did anyway. God's not making every decision. Now, God watches over his word, and we're going to dig into this a little bit deeper. And I'm not going to make this a long teaching because I want you to think about this, and I'm going to I'm going to pick it up again tomorrow. And here's what I want you to think about: if God truly does control everything, then God is the king of victims and not the King of Kings. And my God is the King. I am a king. You're a king. And if you're a lady, listen to this, you're a king, but you can put queen in there. But he is the King of Kings, and you are a king, and you can choose to live for God, and you can choose to— regardless of what life gives you, you can get up and kick Satan just dead in the teeth. And that's what I want to encourage you to— quit playing the victim card and quit thinking that God is in control of every single thing. Now, he knows every word you speak. There is so much about God that I do not understand, but what I do know is that God gives me the choice. He didn't tell me I had to do this podcast. I chose to do this podcast. And he does not tell me that I've got to get up every morning and pray. I choose to get up every morning and pray. I'm not his puppet. I'm not his robot. I am his son. And I get up and I choose with my free will. I choose to give God glory. I choose to thank him in the morning. I choose to read his word. I choose to praise and worship him. That is my choice. And when I use my choice to do with my time something that's pleasing to God, I just believe as a father, when my kids tell me, Dad, thank you for that, or I appreciate this, when you're, when you're thankful, that gratitude is real. And I believe our perfect Father in heaven, when we choose with our free will instead of going and robbing a bank or doing something stupid or crazy, we choose to spend time with him. That makes God smile. And I'm going to leave it with that. I, in the next episode, I'm going to dig in a little bit deeper, but I— that this is enough. It's kind of a heavy topic, and I know maybe some of y'all have, have got, you know, some issues with this, and I'm okay with it, but I just want to get you thinking, and I want you to pray to the Holy Spirit. God, is what he's saying true? Do you not control everything? And I'm going to back it up with scriptures tomorrow, but I just want to get this bar— I want to get this ball rolling, and I want you to, to just be thinking about, does God truly control everything?
