You are Three Parts: Spirit, Soul, and Body

In episode 27 of the "No Doubt, No Fear, Only Believe" podcast, host Greg Ryan opens with a sponsor plug for 1211 Apparel before diving into a detailed teaching on the tripartite nature of humanity—spirit, soul (mind, will, emotion), and body. He grounds the model in Scripture (1 Thessalonians 5:23, Genesis, John 3, John 6, Isaiah, 2 Peter) and uses visual analogies (interlocking circles, a superhero figure for the spirit, an ant for the body) to illustrate how the three components interlock to form a single person. Greg recounts the biblical narrative of Adam’s fall, explaining that the spirit “died” first, leaving only soul and body, which leads to a purely carnal mindset. He argues that believers must use the Bible as a spiritual filter, sharing a personal faith‑healing anecdote where he prayed Scripture over a toothache and experienced relief. The episode previews the next show, which will explore the Bible‑as‑filter concept in depth and discuss the ongoing conflict between spirit and body over the soul. Greg also notes the series goal of 30 consecutive episodes, with this being episode 27, and encourages listeners to stay engaged.

Welcome back. In episode 26, I believe I talked about what died when Adam and Eve bit the fruit. And I think through the process of elimination, we came up with it was their spirit man. And I want you to be able to— and in the show notes here, I'm going to put in a couple of pictures to kind of show you what I'm talking about when I start talking about spirit, soul, and body, like what I read in 1 Thessalonians 5:6. 1 Thessalonians 5:23, now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. So if we look at the spirit, soul, and body, and we come to the conclusion that their body was not dead because it was naked and they were hiding, so they were afraid. And when I say soul we're going to talk about the soul, and that is the mind, will, and emotion. So I've got a picture, I've got a couple of— I've got a cartoon that I have, you know, where I've got an action figure, kind of a Superman as the spirit man, because I think that's got the most strength. So I wanted to, I wanted to show in the cartoon that, you know, he's kind of a superhero because I lean that way a little bit. And then the regular, just a regular cartoon boy, and then the the body I've got is depicted as a little ant. So we're spirit, soul, and body. We're three parts but one person. So you are all of those three things. You are spirit, soul, and body. And if you can think about— I also have a little, um, I had to see back in the day when there were CDs, I, I glued three CDs together, and I may just do a little graph or a little diagram where 3 circles are interlocking. If you can imagine 3 circles interlocking, and on the left-hand side you have the spirit, in the middle you have the soul, and on the right-hand side you have the body. Each one is separate but interlocked, and, and the 3 of those parts make one person, make, make you. So imagine your body, and that's where when we start talking about your flesh and blood, that's That's your heart, that's all your organs, that is your senses, your tasting and your smelling, all that stuff runs through your body. And it's what walks, it's what takes you to and from. And actually, Peter, when he was about to be, I think, crucified, he said he was about to leave the tent. He called it a tent. So he saw himself, his soul, and his spirit he saw that was just hanging around in a tent down here. And you know, we're, we're told that we're not of this world. We are kings and we have been translated into a different kingdom. So we are kings in a different kingdom, but we are still here on earth trying to put all this together. And as you're working out or driving or walking or just listening, you've got 3 parts. And if you can think of a simple majority, and as you're reading the Bible The Bible calls itself Spirit and Truth and Life. And, you know, Jesus says, "The words that I speak to you, they are Spirit and they are life." He is the way, the truth, and the life. The Word of God is Spirit, and it is Jesus. And it's so much that it's hard to even describe. That's why I just, I jump up and down and tell you, look, you really got to get into this Word because it is so much. It is bread. It is Jesus called himself the bread of life, but it is your give us this day your daily bread. You eat the Bible, you eat the bread, you know. And Jesus in John, I think one of the times when he lost most of his followers, when he told people— I mean, he— now this is just my distorted sense of humor, but you know, back way back in the day, I don't know if you remember where people would say it was derogatory where they would say eat me. You know, and Jesus pretty much— that's what he said in John 6. I don't even know, it was— it's— John 6 was a, was a long chapter, but it's, it's back at the end of John 6 where Jesus starts telling his, his followers and the people that were listening that he was the bread of life, and that if you don't eat my body and drink my blood, you can have no part of me. And the people's man, this is kind of a tough saying. And so Jesus was saying, look, you know, there are some things, and probably, and why it's so difficult for non-believers and people that have not been saved, and why I kind of waited until we talked about salvation and sin and all that before I started getting into the spirit, soul, and body, is because it— you, when you read the Bible, because it is spirit, your spirit man, when you get saved, when you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you go from being spirit dead to then spirit led. Or you are— your spirit becomes alive. The thing that comes back to the thing that is born again, as Jesus said in John when he was talking to Nicodemus in John chapter 3, where you have to be born again. And Nicodemus was going, you know, how am I supposed to— am I supposed to enter back into my mother? That don't make any sense whatsoever. And to the carnal or to the fleshy mind, being born again makes no sense. But we're going to go back, all the way back to Genesis 3, where Adam bit the fruit and something died. Well, he, he couldn't— before, he didn't know he was naked, so his spirit man was so alive that he really couldn't feel his body or didn't really, you know, give it much attention. And then when his spirit man died, then he was just two parts. He was soul, mind, will, and emotion, and he was body. So there wasn't the spirit man that was alive that was giving him any feedback. So then the only feedback he was getting then was from the body. And that's kind of where we are now when the Bible talks about us being carnally minded, and, and all we're doing is, is using the filter that we that our 5 senses give us. And if we just use that filter, we are going to get the snot kicked out of us, for lack of a better terminology, from Satan, because he is trying to drag us into the physical realm and, and just fight with only those things that we can see. And before, I, I talked about that it's impossible to please God, is in Hebrews 11:6, I believe, that that it says that it's impossible to please God, and but God's not mad. God's not got his arms folded, and he's not got his forehead all, you know, furrowed up, all mad, and, you know, squinting eyes and all that, just waiting for you to mess up. God is trying to coax you into using your faith to move things, and, and he knows that you— he needs to— he's trying to get you to come into the spirit realm and, and fight the enemy there. And Satan's trying to pull you into the physical realm, and the physical realm is so much easier to be pulled into because that's where we're living. And so everything— you're, you're running all your senses, you're running everything through the filter of your eyes. But if you start grabbing what you see in the Bible and you start using that— and in the— and then the next episode, because this is kind of running on a little bit, but In the next episode, I'm going to talk about the filter and using the Bible as the filter. So when you start— when, when things like— when I, I was talking about a toothache a few episodes back to where my tooth was hurting, and in the physical realm my tooth hurt. I'm telling you, and I used the— I used the example that it hurt to blink. I mean, I'm telling you, I could tell you, I could point to my jaw and up my jaw and in my ear all the way up my ear and up my head. I mean, if you've ever had a toothache, I could feel the nerve that was affected by this tooth. But that was in the physical realm. Well, in the spirit realm, if I want to, if I want to use my faith in the spirit realm, then I've got to see, I got to find something in the Word of God that tells me that I'm not crazy by telling, telling my tooth that, hey tooth, you've got to be healed, you're healed. And I do that by the Word of God. Using his stripes. By his stripes we were healed. Uh, I think 2 Peter talks about that, and Isaiah says that, um, by his stripes we are healed. And we'll get into that again. But I had to use— I had to exercise my faith. And I'm here to tell you that it worked, because my tooth does not hurt. And it— this isn't the first time that I've done that. I, I have used my faith. I find something in the word of God. Now The word of God is not going to give you the grace. The grace of God is not poured out so you can go rob a bank or win the lottery and all that good stuff. The grace of God is poured out based on what God has already done for us. So again, I starting to ramble a little bit. I'm trying to try to teach 18 different lessons in this one episode, and I don't want to do that, but I, I wanted to introduce the spirit, soul, and body. It's hard on this episode and using just a microphone to kind of paint the picture, but if you can imagine again the three circles interlocking and spirit, soul, and body, and every— and soul is in the middle. And so the, the spirit and the body are fighting over the soul, and we're going to talk about that tomorrow, and we're going to talk about how we got to move one way or the other And so to pull all this spiritual realm together, I'm going to hopefully do it before I get to episode 30. If you've been with me since the beginning, you know that I made a commitment to do 30 straight episodes, and I'm on 27 now, so I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I'm praying that it's not a train. So I just want to stop there. Thank you for being a part of this journey with me, and I want to encourage you to just continue. If you have any questions, I'm trying to figure out different avenues on how I can communicate with you. But I, again, thank you for being a part of this, and I look forward to visiting with you tomorrow.
