YouTube Bible Study What does God look at in a king Moment of Truth

God chose David as king not for his looks or birthright, but for his heart. The speaker examines 1 Samuel 16 to show that God judges the spirit, not outward appearance, and calls believers to grow from the inside out through Scripture.
Chapters
Good morning. I want to finish up this week on a high note. I want to talk to you about King David. We've been talking about kings and priests all week, so I figured why not talk about the most famous king of all, and that's King David. And what, what King David had— and I want to go back to— you'll see the, the, um, selection process in 1 Samuel at the Old Testament, uh, the book of prophets of, you know, is 1 Samuel 16. And you can see kind of how all this played out and how this went down. But in the, um, in the, in, in the book, what was happening is they had a, they had a king that just wasn't cutting it. It was King Saul. And God had just, God just threw his hands up and said, look, I'm done with him. I want you to go anoint a new king. And so, and Samuel kind of did this in the, you know, he kind of did it on the down low. He didn't want anyone to know because when, you know, if Saul found out, you know, that he was going and anointing a new king, you know, there'd have been trouble, probably been dead. So he went down, it was the tribe of Benjamin and Jesse's sons. So they had this, you know, he told Jesse, hey, get your sons together. You know, one of these guys is going to be king. So he got the selection process going, they had a feast or whatever, and then Samuel stood up and then the first son came. And the first son, when he came, excuse me, when he came, Samuel to himself said, well, I mean, this is obviously the guy. I mean, it's a good looking young man. He's the firstborn, which is a big deal in Israel and in the families there and all the tribes. So he was pretty certain that this was the guy. And then God in 1 Samuel 16:7 said, whoa, whoa, whoa, you know, don't, and I'm going to paraphrase, But God said, don't look at his physical stature and don't look at his appearance because God doesn't see— I don't see how man sees. And what God is saying is he sees, he looks at what's on the inside and he looks at, you know, what a person's made of. And he said, you know, I've refused him, don't anoint him. And so they go down the line and they find David who he wasn't even invited. He was out with the— he was out with the sheep. He was shepherding the father's flock. And so they— and it's a good— it's a good story. You need to read it in 1 Samuel 16. But he told David, he said, look, we're not going to sit down until you go get that boy because that's the only one left. So Samuel, you know, he's not— I mean, he's not dumb. He's like, this is the guy. So he had to hear from God. So anyway, he Everybody's standing up and David comes and he's anointed. And so what I want, what I want to take from this today is I want you to think about, you know, in this world that we're living in, everything is so physical, everything goes by based on our 5 senses. But in the spirit realm, and that's where all the power is, that's where God is. God is a spirit, and those that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. And we worship God by faith seeing that he is more powerful, and he is— where God is is where all the power is. And so God is in the spirit realm, so we need to learn how to use that. And that's my whole goal here, is to help teach you in kind of a— you can tell by the way I talk and the way I— the analogies that I use that I'm not ever probably going to come to you as a theologian breaking down the Greek and into Hebrew, but what I want to do is I want to make it simple. I want to make it understandable so that you can dig in, so you say, look, I can read this. I mean, if you can read, I mean, you don't even have to read, to be honest with you. You can put a CD or listen to it on your phone, an MP3. I mean, you can listen to the Bible. You don't even have to read, but I want to encourage you just to get into it because that's where the power is. That's where the power is, and that's why I'm here, is I'm here to encourage you to, to just get in, dig in. I mean, I, I've said this before, I'll say it a bunch, I make a horrible Holy Spirit. I am not— I'm not God. I, I know him, and he's given me certain gifts and talents to try to help motivate you to do things, but I'm nowhere near— I mean, I screw up. I mean, King David, and we're going to find out as we study a little bit with him, I mean, he screwed up. He was, he was a man after God's own heart, but he had some issues. I have some issues, you have some issues, but God's not looking at our issues. God's not looking at our outward appearance. He's looking at what's on the inside. That— and that's so comforting to know that, you know, we can't see what God sees, but what he sees— if you've declared Jesus as your Lord and Savior— what he sees is his son. He sees perfection. He sees a perfect spirit man. And so when he looks at you, he sees Perfection. And so, you know, it doesn't matter what you look at in the mirror, and it doesn't matter what the other people think about. It matters what God thinks about you, and God loves you. And he— and that when I say he's— you are his favorite, I mean, I mean it. You are God's favorite. He knows, you know, you see all this stuff that it says, you— he knows the numbers of hairs on your head. And, you know, I mean, he knows everything. He knows everything. And he knows right where you are. And so, you know, don't think for a minute that God doesn't know and that he doesn't love you and that, you know, you can't, you know, God can't, you know, because you've done something so wrong. I mean, we're gonna get into all that mess, but I mean, that's just, I mean, that's just a lie that's going on in your head that has nothing to do with scripture. And we'll get into that, but know that God looks at your inward. And the way God works, just to kind of, you can write this down because it's pretty good. When I heard this, it's like, wow, that's pretty good. Pretty cool. God works from the bottom up and from the inside out. So God's way of doing things, the kingdom of God— and we're going to get into that also— but, but the, the bottom up and the inside out, that it's growing and growth. And just little by little, um, you can become the man who God created you to be. But you got to do it, I think, through the word. You've got to dig into the word. And I want to encourage you one more time this week to just open up your Bible. It's not gonna, it's not gonna bite you. Just open it up, read 1 Samuel 16, and kind of get an idea of, you know, how God chose David. Or re, you know, rehash that if you've already read it. Go, go read it again. But anyway, thank you. I want to appreciate— look at that— and all this stuff, I really don't really know what I'm doing. I've told you that. But, you know, I'm told that if you can like and share and comment, that that helps spread this. So if you know somebody that may benefit from this, share them, post something, I don't know, tag them, whatever you do on Facebook. I said I've ignored Facebook, but I mean, it's here and it's not going anywhere, so instead of turning my back on it, let's just embrace it. So anyway, have a great weekend. It's Labor Day weekend here. Be careful, be safe, have a great time, and I'll see you, I'll see you Monday. Take care.
