Stylist Hallie Abrams explains the 1/3-2/3 proportion rule for wide-leg pants: keep your shirt's front hem at your hip bone and let the back extend longer for a clean line and built-in front-tuck effect. Works especially well with barrel jeans and low-slung pockets.

As a 20-year veteran stylist, here is a style tip for you. I always want an easy breezy outfit. I'm all about tucking your shirts, but I know a lot of people don't want to do that. When you have a wider leg pant, it's ideal to have a shirt that's sort of hitting at the hip bone so your proportions are right. It's sort of a 1/3, 2/3 rule. But one of the things I like about this shirt, and I haven't seen it on a lot of shirts, see how it's a little longer in the back? So gives you like that little bit of booty coverage, but you still are short here and it goes longer here, and I think it creates a really, really nice line. So anyway, that is one of the things that when I tried this on, I was like, ooh. And when you're wearing like a barrel jean or something that has a lower slung pocket, this works really well also, cuz you're wearing it out. It's sort of like it gives that front tuck without being a front tuck, and you can just wear it out.
