The best and worst fashion at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

A conversational transcript of a YouTube segment in which hosts Jasmine Monroe and Hallie Abrams review and critique red-carpet fashion from the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. They discuss individual looks (Laura Dern in Saint Laurent; Billy Porter’s removable train; Ana de Armas’s classic blue sequin gown) and broader trends/tips—Pantone colors for 2020 (classic blue, marigold maize, scarlet red), sequins, statement trains, pockets, and lipstick as a styling hack. The tone is informal and opinionated, mixing praise with constructive criticism (e.g., J.Lo’s look described as resembling a Christmas present).

It's exciting. How did you think it went?
I thought it was great. I have to say, I was searching a little bit for, like, my major love. Okay. Yeah.
All right.
I mean, the fashion was great, but.
Yeah, of course. That's why you're here. You're here to talk fashion. So up first we have Laura Dern. So tell me all about this look, and what do you think she was going for?
So she's wearing Saint Laurent, and, you know, she's been in the business forever. So I really love the idea that she was elegant and sexy but still age appropriate, and that her hair wasn't too fussy. So she was very real, but just beautiful.
And that's always a good thing. Never too much, you know, worrying about. You were just telling us about, you know, putting something on your. You know, just to hold it up. But it's stuff like that.
You don't want any wardrobe malfunctions.
Drives you crazy. Up next, we have Billy Porter. I love him. I'm a Pittsburgh girl. And you and I were talking about before. He's a Pittsburgh native, and he always does camp.
Well, he does. And he was the king of camp last year at the Met Ball. And, I mean, it's just. It's elegant, and he carries it, and, you know, that train zips off. So he said it would be better for the after party so he could still be elegant and not have someone step on his train.
That's just like a wedding gown, Right?
Okay.
All right, up next, we have Ana de Armas.
I thought this was. Yeah, I thought it was beautiful. I loved that it was classic blue, which is one of Pantone's colors of 2020. And it had pockets, so. And her waist looks so teeny.
It's like Cinderella, you know that classic.
And even though it was all sequins, it was, like, understated, so it was. I just thought it was elegant.
Now Zoe is next. We, of course, soon as you got a chance to see her, it was like she won. Nothing else could top that to me.
Yes. And she was at the beginning of the red carpet, and I actually put on my Instagram last night, I was having, like, conversations with all my followers, like, who do you love? And I put out there. She was my favorite so far. And really, at the end, she was still my favorite.
So was it yellow? Yellow was the theme. I mean, everyone looked great in yellow.
It was. There were people in the audience that. I don't know who they were that were wearing yellow, but when I saw Sandra Bullock at the End. She didn't do the red carpet. She must have snuck in the back. I was like, oh, my gosh. And that's another color. That marigold maize is another one of Pantone's colors this year. So it's classic blue. I think they call it scarlet red. And this marigold. So I thought it was beautiful. And the one other thing I'd say is people think they can't wear that yellow. It's all about the lipstick. If you put on a bright lipstick, you can sort of fake it so that you can pull it off.
You have all the fashion hacks definitely follow her. All right. Goo goo Matherall, Bathural. We have to talk about her.
So, yeah, she was in that yellow sequin dress that also had the deep plunge and sort of the belted area. I mean, sequins were big also, but I think it was how they were done unexpectedly.
Right. J. Lo.
It made me sad, really. I know there were people that said they loved her, and I get it, but she also. A lot of people felt. And I agree. I thought she looked like a Christmas present.
No, I do.
It didn't do her justice.
But every time I see J. Lo, I feel like no matter what she wears, I mean, it's J. Lo. She gets a pass.
I know, but this time, I don't think she did. And again, it's not only her, it's her and her stylist. So everybody here has a stylist.
Joey King.
Yeah. I thought it was a work of art, but I don't think. Again, I don't think it did her justice.
It looked good on Instagram. It's like, I don't know what the picture does to it. I mean, it looks like.
I think it's sort of more raised a little. And I also think when she doesn't stand up straight, the lines sort of, like, buckled, which reminds me to sit up straight.
All right, so, well, thank you so much for joining us. And honestly, for everything and more, you can head over to wkyc.com or you can follow Halle right. On her Instagram. She has the do's and the don'ts to making sure you know what to wear.
The wardrobe concern.
Yeah, we need her every morning getting dressed.
Yes. We do these really early girls. I don't know. Just come on in.
Just help us out. I mean, I love Hal's outfit today. Beautiful. Yes.
And Jasmine, you as well. And I loved all the yellow, and I feel like it's kind of appropriate that we saw so much of that, because we're going to have a lot of sunshine today.
