The most outrageous fashion from Met Gala 2019

A short TV/YouTube interview with wardrobe consultant Hallie Abrams about the Met Gala 2019 and its “camp” theme. Abrams defines camp (citing Susan Sontag), and the hosts and Abrams discuss standout, theatrical looks — Ezra Miller’s mask, Janelle Monáe’s winking/double-hat dress, Lady Gaga’s multi-layered reveal by designer Brandon Maxwell, and Billy Porter’s throne entrance — linking the evening’s fashion to the Met’s Costume Institute exhibition and the idea of fashion-as-art.

Celebrities are challenged to come up with the most outrageous fashions to go along with the theme. This year's theme was camp. So, like, kind of campy. And joining us to talk about everything, Hallie Abrams, the wardrobe consultant. Thanks so much for being here.
Thanks for having me.
These, I mean, talk about talker outfits. I mean, to cause a stir. There's so many outrageous ones.
Yes, ma'. Am.
But I want to start with Ezra Miller.
Ezra Miller was so. I feel like half of it is the idea of what is camp. Okay. You know, and camp is not camping. Like, with a backpack and marshmallows. It is campy. And it's from an original essay that was written in the 60s by Susan Sontag. And in it, she talked about how camp is not kitsch. Camp needs an audience. And so this was the ultimate audience. And the people that were able to interact with it, that's who hit it out of the park.
Well, I mean, it really set up for some crazy, crazy fashions, like what Ezra's wearing, which is a mask. And that seven eyes. I mean, that one. So we have him. We also have Janelle Monae. Tell us about this one.
This was my favorite.
This is your favorite?
She winked.
Her dress winked. That is the most polite way of.
Saying it's multiple hats and just, you know. And it's where sort of the wink was placed. Yes, where the wink was placed, but also, hats off. Where they're able to hit it. Where it's so bad it's good.
Yeah, yeah.
You know, and it's the art of extra. And when they get to that point, that's when I feel like they've really, like, made the list, you know?
Did it shock you that Gaga stripped down to her underwear?
Well, nothing she does shocks me, but I think she and Billy Porter are actually like, they do camp, even when it's not the theme. You know, think about Billy Porter in that tuxedo dress from the Oscars. That was camp. And that's the whole point. And she. I mean, that meat dress.
Well, we have her dress from last night, and this is her grand entrance. I mean, what do you think of. She had multiple outfit changes. Four outfits. She kept stripping down. Yes. How do you think of. What do you think of that entrance? Like, how did it come across to the audience?
I mean, I think people were dying over it. And then each time she took a layer off, you're like, no way. There's not more. There's more, but there's more. We're showing it.
Yeah, we've Been talking about it all morning. We didn't see the end result until now.
Brandon Maxwell has been her designer forever. That's who was her. Who accompanied her on the red carpet. So he was there sort of helping her change her outfit along the way.
You talked about Billy Porter. Let's take a look at him last night. Because this one, we saw a picture earlier. We haven't seen the video yet, but tell us about his outfit.
I mean, he's the art of extra, right? He really is like, that's it. He came in on a throne with half naked men carrying him and he's all in gold and he's just, you.
Know, I think that is just. It's amazing. So we want to explain too. This sets up. It's an art exhibit at the Met Gala. So what does this do for fashion in translation to art?
Well, I think that it really. There's a whole wing the Costume Institute at the Met. And. And each year this exhibit is there and regular people like us, I think Met members get to go first. I think like the first month is exclusively for people that have memberships to the Met. And after that, us regular folk get to go. And you can see a lot of the costumes. And it's really the idea that fashion and art, it's that intersection that collide.
Yeah. Halle, thank you so much for being with us. We love your pics. And we'll share more of the fashion throughout the morning.
The severed head disturbed me.
That disturbed me too. I'm gonna have nightma. I have not on Instagram.
