It Took Me 30 Years To Realize What I'll Tell You In 14 Minutes

In this 14‑minute solo talk, entrepreneur and engineer Hannah Hammond distills four life‑changing lessons that she says took her three decades of success, wealth, and education to discover. She opens by describing how, despite building a multi‑billion‑dollar pipeline at HB Capital, earning a summa‑cum‑laude engineering degree, and closing nine‑figure real‑estate deals, she felt miserable and unfulfilled. The turning point came when she nearly lost her health, relationships, and peace, prompting a deep internal audit. Lesson 1 – “Buy assets, not liabilities” – expands the classic financial advice beyond money to relationships, habits, thoughts, and daily routines. She stresses ownership (equity, cash‑flowing assets) as the foundation of freedom, sharing her first real‑estate purchase at 18 as the catalyst for change. Lesson 2 – “Do the inner work” – focuses on forgiveness (self and others), prioritising health with the right mindset, and cultivating stillness through daily meditation. She frames stillness as the gap between reacting and responding, a conduit for divine or universal guidance, and ties it to sustained performance. Lesson 3 – “Know your core values and live by them” – urges a deliberate definition of values such as generosity, fairness, the “who‑not‑how” principle, and faith. She explains how aligning with these values transformed HB Capital’s growth, her content reach, and her personal fulfillment. Lesson 4 – “Live in the green zone” – introduces a personal framework of internal states: red (survival, fear), yellow (comfort, autopilot), and green (flow, purpose, joy). She argues that spending 90 % of time in the green zone eliminates regret, fuels creativity, and yields better outcomes with less resistance. Hammond concludes by recapping the four lessons, urging viewers to apply them immediately, and invites them to share the message and subscribe. The talk blends personal anecdotes, concrete practices, and a motivational tone aimed at entrepreneurs and high‑achievers seeking sustainable fulfillment.

I'm going to share with you 4 lessons that changed my life more than any business book, any deal, any revenue milestone ever did. And it took me almost 30 years to learn them. I built companies, I closed 9 figures in transactions, I graduated summa cum laude with an engineering degree, and I was still miserable, still running and still chasing something that I just couldn't name. And it wasn't until I almost lost everything that mattered—my health, my relationships, my peace that I finally slowed down long enough to actually learn. And what I learned had nothing to do with cap rates or financial models, but it had everything to do with how I was living. So whether you're just starting out or you've already had some success and you're wondering why it doesn't feel the way you thought it would, stay for this one, because these 4 lessons are the ones that I would tattoo on my younger self's forehead if I could. Lesson 1: And this is the one that started it all for me. Buy assets, not liabilities. Now, I know that you've heard this before. Robert Kiyosaki, Rich Dad, Poor Dad. I read that book at 13 years old and it completely rewired my brain. An asset puts money in your pocket. A liability takes money out of your pocket. Simple concept, but life-changing application. But this is the thing that nobody talks about. The principle doesn't just apply to money. It applies to everything. Your relationships, they're either assets or liabilities. Your habits are either assets or liabilities. The way you spend your morning, the content you consume, the thoughts you entertain— assets or liabilities. All of it. I spent years building actual financial assets like real estate, businesses, income streams, while simultaneously filling my life with liabilities that I didn't recognize. Toxic patterns, relationships that drained me, a lifestyle that looked successful on the outside but was costing me everything on the inside. So the deeper layer— here's what I mean by that. You have to have some sort of control over your income and your ability to generate wealth. I don't care if you're a solopreneur, self-employed, a full-blown entrepreneur, or a high-income earner who invests in businesses and assets on the side. The point is you need to own something. You need to have a stake in the game. You can't build real freedom trading your time for hours for somebody else's dream with no equity, no upside, or no ownership. The wealthy don't just earn money. They own things that earn money. Cash flowing real estate, businesses, content platform, royalties, things that work while you're sleeping, while you're meditating, and while you're with the people that you love. And here's the thing that nobody tells you. It's not about how fast you can get there. It's about getting on the right track. Even if you're starting with a side investment while you work your W-2, that's ownership. That's an asset. That's the first domino. I built HB Capital into a national capital advisory firm with a multi-billion-dollar pipeline. But my first asset, it was a property that I bought for $76,000 at 18 years old with my commission check, literally shaking at the closing table because I was terrified. And that fear was the beginning of everything that changed my life. So stop buying things that look impressive and start buying things that build freedom. And then audit everything else in your life through the same lens. Is this an asset or is this a liability? Lesson number 2 is one that saved my life. And I mean that. Do the inner work. I know it sounds like something you read on a wellness Instagram account or something like that, but I'm telling you, as someone who's built multiple companies and has done 9 figures in real estate transactions and deals, graduated summa cum laude from the School of Engineering at ASU, and none of that mattered until I sat down with myself and dealt with what was underneath all of the overachieving. Forgive yourself and others. The first part of the inner work It's forgiveness. And I'm not talking about the greeting card version. I'm talking about the brutal, ugly, sit-in-a-room-and-sob kind of forgiveness. Forgive yourself for the mistakes that you made when you didn't know better. Forgive the people who hurt you, not because they deserve it, because you deserve to be free from it. I carried resentment for so many years toward my parents, toward my ex-boyfriends, toward people who let me down, toward myself for the way I self-sabotaged for so many years. And that resentment was like carrying a backpack full of rocks up a mountain while wondering why I couldn't move faster. And the moment I put it down, the moment I truly forgave, everything in my life accelerated. My business, my health, my relationships, everything. Put your health first. And that leads to the next piece: your health. Period. Non-negotiable. I don't care how big your pipeline is. I don't care how many deals you're closing. I don't care how much money's in your bank account. If your body breaks down, the game is over. But here's the nuance. It's not just about going to the gym. It's about why you go. Do you go to the gym because you love yourself and your body, or are you going because you shame your body? And you're trying to love yourself. That question that my coach asked me when I was 25 years old changed everything for me because I realized that I had been punishing myself into fitness instead of loving myself into it. And the energy behind your actions matters as much as the actions themselves. You can do the right things for the wrong reasons and still end up empty. Stillness is a superpower. The inner work also means getting still. I practice meditation every single day before I check my phone, before I look at the deals, before I see all the fires, before I engage with the world. 20 minutes of silence. And I know what some of you are thinking, just like I thought, Hannah, I don't have the time for that. No, you don't have the time not to. Every bad decision I've ever made came from reacting. Every great run came from being connected and responding. And the gap between reacting and responding is created by stillness. And in that gap lies our freedom. So here's what I believe at my core: this life is truly a miracle. God is on our side, but we have to have stillness to listen to him, hear him, and trust that everything is as it should be. And whether for you it's God or Mother Earth or the universe, We cannot argue the fact that there is something greater than us out there. We can't hear that divine guidance when our nervous system is screaming and our calendar is packed from 6 AM to midnight. The stillness is where the downloads come, the clarity, the ideas that turn into empires, the peace that makes the empires worth building. And this is important: stillness isn't passivity. We we still have to take action. We have to intentionally create what we desire in our life. The listening tells us where to go, but the action gets us there. So lesson number 3: know your core values and live by them no matter what. And this one sounds obvious, but it's not, because most people have never actually sat down and defined what their values really are. And if they have, they're not usually living by them. They're living by someone else's playbook, and then they're wondering why they feel disconnected, overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or have self-sabotaging habits in their life, and they just feel off. Always be generous, and not just when it's convenient— always. Generosity isn't a strategy, it's a way of being. It's an energy that you carry. Give your time, give your knowledge, your resources, and your grace. The universe keeps score. Differently than your accountant does. And be fair in your deals, in your relationships, in how you treat the person who can do absolutely nothing for you. Fairness compounds just like interest does. And here's a value that completely transformed how I build: the principle of who, not how. Whatever you want to create in your life, you can create it. You just need the right who's around you to do it. Not more information, not another course, Not more hours in the day. The right people. When I stopped asking, how do I do this? And started asking, who can help me do this? That's when HB Capital went from a small operation to a national firm. That's when my content went from an idea to 4 million+ views a month. That's when everything scaled. You don't need to be the smartest person in every room. You need to be the person who finds the smartest people and gives them a reason to to build in the mission with you. And the anchor for all of it, faith. Stick to your faith no matter what. I'm not here to preach at you, but I'm not gonna hide it either. My faith has been the foundation of everything that I do. When deals fall apart, when relationships end, when the world feels like it's spinning, I go back to the foundation and the foundation holds. Everything I do, I try to let the intention come from love, not from trying to prove something, not from trying to fill a void, from love. When you operate from love instead of fear, you make different decisions, better decisions, decisions that compound into a life that you're actually proud of and you're actually excited to wake up to every single day. All right, lesson number 4, and this is the one that ties everything together: live in the green zone. So let me explain what I mean by that. I have this framework for how I evaluate my life, And it's not based on revenue or followers or deals closed. It's based on my internal state. The red zone is survival mode, fear, anxiety, reactivity, running from something instead of towards something. And I spent most of my 20s there and my teens and my childhood building companies from desperation and calling it discipline, making money while my soul was absolutely dying, achieving on the outside and literally disintegrating on the inside. Now, the yellow zone is comfort and autopilot. Not in crisis, but not growing, just going through the motions. This is fine. And most people live their entire lives in the yellow zone because it's just not painful enough to change. This is the most dangerous place to be. Now, the green zone, this is where everything changed for me. The green zone is flow. It's love. It's purpose. It's joy. It's creating from inspiration and mission instead of desperation. Making decisions from vision instead of fear. Being fully present and fully alive every day. And the real metric that matters? Here's what I know now that I wish I had known at 20. If you die knowing that you lived in the green zone 90% of the time, then how could you possibly have any regrets? So let me say that again. No regrets. Not because everything was perfect. Not because you never failed. But because you were present. You were aligned. You were operating from love and purpose and intention instead of fear and scarcity and ego. So don't ever sacrifice your commitment to living in the green zone. Don't sacrifice it for a deal. Don't sacrifice it for a person. Don't sacrifice it for a relationship. Don't sacrifice it for money. Because what's the point of it all if it's not to be happy and to enjoy the journey and continue to spread happiness to others around us? I've been in rooms with people who have exited their companies for tens or hundreds of millions of dollars, and some of them, the ones who never did the inner work, who never found their green zone, they were the most miserable people that I had ever met. They had everything and nothing at the same time. And I made a promise to myself after sitting in one of those rooms. I said, I will never end up like that. I would rather build slower and be in the green zone forever than scale fast and be miserable for nothing. And you know what happened? I built faster because the green zone is where creativity lives. It's where clarity lives. It's where the best decisions come from. It's where generosity and vision and courage and peace all exist at the same time. Because like my coach taught me, the outcome can only be as great as the energetic state in which you initiate the action. And so if you commit to living in the green zone and you make that your top priority, no matter what, your outcomes will naturally start to flow to you and start to happen exactly in the way that you want them to, with a lot less force. Force and resistance. You don't have to choose between success and happiness, but you do have to build from the right place, and that place is the green zone. So let me recap. One, buy assets, not liabilities, in your finances and in your life. Own something, build equity, create freedom. Two, do the inner work. Forgive, heal, get still. Let the intention behind everything you do Be from love. 3, know your values and live by them no matter what. Be generous, fair, and kind. Find your whos and hold onto your faith. 4, live in the green zone 90% of the time. That's the metric. That's the scoreboard. That's the goal. These aren't lessons that I read in a book. These are lessons that I bled for. And I share that because I know somebody watching this right now is where I was 5 years ago, achieving everything and feeling nothing but pain. And that doesn't have to be your story. You can change the trajectory today, right now, with the next decision you make. If this hits home for you, please share it with someone who needs to hear it. And please subscribe to my channel if you want more real talk like this. I love you guys, I believe in you, and I'll see you on the next one.
