Ultrarunner Matt Johnson describes the depression that hit after 17 days of intense racing and constant praise. When the external validation stopped, he crashed hard, struggling with the emotional toll of what felt like a sudden loss of purpose and identity.
You talked about suffering some depression after your Texas race. And, like, post race depression, post accomplishment depression. How did you grapple with that?
I want to be completely transparent right off the bat, is that the depression was imagine going for 17 days and having people tell you all day long,
you're the greatest.
You're so good. You're the best. You're inspiring me. Other people can do this. You're the go. And then, unfortunately, when that ends, whether it's running or carrying a UFC world title or anything like that, when it ends, no one cares. And what I found is just like what you said, it's identity. Matt Johnson, the ultra runner, the Matt Johnson underscore, the Instagram guy. Right? That's not who I want to be. I want to be Matthew. Like, I want to be me.
