Chapters

The significance of the Fourth Estate lies not only in its ability to inform, but also in its responsibility to challenge authority, question policies, and amplify diverse voices in society, especially those that are often marginalized or silenced. The press is also a check on government power. Journalism has long served as a counterbalance to authority, revealing injustices, corruption, and abuse of power. Investigative reporting has brought to light everything from political scandals, for example, Watergate, to financial fraud, environmental crises, and human rights abuses. In the US, the First Amendment protects the press's right to scrutinize government actions without fear of retribution.
