Silvia Dutchevici and Heather Hester talk about parenting LGBTQ teens, how parents respond to crisis, and what therapy can offer. They discuss learning from your children and giving yourself permission to grow through the experience.
I say people fall apart when it feels safe. So when you're in crisis, you just have to survive. You just keep going and you make sure that you make it through.
One of the great benefits of that is that we can learn so much from our kids. Yes. Because they see things in a very different way.
They make mistakes, but in order to come up with different modes of, you know, being in the world, we need to, like, experiment. That change happens every every day, not just during a stressful time.
Another thing, just that's— this is okay, like giving yourself permission to, to do this. This is actually a good thing, and this, this means that I'm, I'm growing and I'm learning.
Therapy could be a place where you are supported, you feel heard, and you feel validated, and that's great. For me, that was not my interest as a therapist. I was always interested in transforming people's lives.
