This content was created by Heather Hester. This content was uploaded by Heather Hester. This is a podcast episode titled "Travel Prep as Love: A Friday Reset for Parents of LGBTQ Kids" from the More Human, More Kind series, created July 17, 2026. Host Heather Hester addresses parents of LGBTQ+ children about travel preparation as an act of love and advocacy—arguing that preparation enables joy rather than fueling anxiety. She offers practical guidance (a pre-travel conversation with your child, asking what they’re excited or nervous about, what helps them feel like themselves), a weekly focus word (“prepared”), and recommends affirming travel resources (A3M Risk Map, IGLTA) and intentional spending on welcoming hotels/restaurants. The excerpt also contains a brief commercial read for Hester Commercial Painting.

On Tuesday, we talked about travel, about what it means to move through the world as a family with an LGBTQ+ kid, the research that we do, all of the paperwork that we need, the cultural conversations that need to be had, that permission just to tap out and take a break, the instinct to scan every room you walk into. And underneath all of that was one quiet truth: preparation is not the opposite of joy. Preparation is actually what makes real joy possible. When you do the work ahead of time, you get to be present when you arrive. That is the gift, and that is what we are working toward. I want to sit with something for a moment before we get to your Friday Tools. Most families travel without thinking about safety in the way that families with LGBTQ+ kids have to. They pick a destination, book a hotel, pack their bags, and just go. That is a privilege. I'm not criticizing it. I'm just stating a fact. Our families carry an extra layer, and carrying it does not have to be heavy. We carry it intentionally.
Welcome to More Human, More Kind, the podcast for parents of LGBTQ+ kids and anyone trying to stay human in a world that keeps hardening. I'm Heather Hester, and here we talk about fear, belonging, boundaries, courage, love, and what it means to protect what matters without losing yourself in the process. Your child doesn't just need a parent who's informed, they need a parent who is grounded and strong. Let's take a breath and let's begin.
The research, the conversations, the paperwork, the permission structures we build for our kids before we ever leave home, all of that is love, made practical. It is allyship in action. And here is what I've learned after years of doing this. The preparation becomes part of the trip. The conversations you have before you go become part of the memory. Your kid knows you thought about them specifically, very carefully, before you even got on the plane or into the car. And that lands with them. Always lands. So this is your Friday reset. One small shift that can create a meaningful ripple. Your word of the week is prepared. Not anxious or fearful. Not even hypervigilant. Prepared. There is a meaningful difference. Anxiety focuses on what might go wrong. Preparation focuses on what you can do about it. This week, every time you feel that travel-related worry start to creep in, come back to this word. How can I prepare? What do I already have in place? What does my kid need from me before we go? This week, have one pre-travel conversation with your kid. Not a safety lecture, an actual conversation. Ask them what they are most looking forward to on the trip. Ask if there is anything they're nervous about. Ask what they want to bring that will help them feel most like themselves. Let them talk. Let their answers guide you. That conversation is the beginning of Everything. Your micro rebellion this week is booking something or researching something through an LGBTQ+ affirming travel resource. Use the A3M Risk Map. Visit the IGLTA website. Find one hotel, one restaurant, one neighborhood at your destination that has been explicitly identified as welcoming. Spend your travel dollars intentionally. That is not just preparation, that is advocacy. And if you need something to come back to this week, here it is: preparation is not the opposite of joy. Preparation is what makes real joy possible. Say it to yourself the next time the pre-trip anxiety shows up and let it reframe the work as the gift that it actually is. Thanks for being here this week. Go do one small thing to prepare your family for something wonderful. It does not have to be big. It just has to be intentional. I will see you next Tuesday. Until then, keep becoming more human. And more kind. Your space sends something before you ever do.
