A short motivational talk (YouTube) by Heather Aardema about confronting toxic, negative internal dialogue—especially toward the body. The speaker frames thoughts as drivers of actions, behaviors, and character, argues against unrealistic body expectations, and recommends practicing self-compassion by using personal character strengths (for example, speaking to yourself with the kindness you would offer a friend) to build supportive self-talk.

Hi, everybody. Welcome to today's Boost. Are you making yourself sick with your thoughts? Is the conversation going on in your head? Is it negative or is it positive? Thoughts drive actions, actions drive behaviors, and behaviors drive character. It matters if your thoughts are positive or negative. One area we're especially negative is towards our bodies. We spend years, if not decades, frustrated that our bodies are not living up to these impossible standards. I think we should get rid of these expectations and we instead should feel appreciation. We should appreciate our bodies for doing the best that they can possibly do with the information and the inputs that we're giving them through diet and through lifestyle. So how do you encourage yourself when you're feeling especially down and you've got these negative thoughts? Use your character strengths. So, for example, say kindness is one of your top strengths. How would you talk to a friend who is in your shoes? Would you build them up or tear them down? You would build them up. You would say, keep going. You've got this. You're creating momentum. Use those words on yourself. Stop tearing yourself down. You're not doing yourself any favors. Build yourself up and use your character strengths to do so. Take care.
