Decluttering Made Easy with a Simple Question: Light or Heavy? | with Heather Aardema

Heather Aardema teaches a decluttering trick: ask yourself if something feels light or heavy. A heavy feeling signals emotional baggage worth exploring or releasing. She shows how repainting kitchen cabinets shifted one client's space from heavy to light.

One of my favorite tips when it comes to decluttering is the following. Let's say you have a shirt and you're not sure whether you should get rid of it or not. Look at the shirt. Don't touch it, because if you touch it, that creates an emotional bond. Look at the shirt and say, does this shirt feel light or heavy? If the shirt feels light, it's not cluttering. You keep it. If it feels heavy, you know that there's a story there. You know that you've created some kind of complicated meaning that is optional. And so when something feels light, it's a heck, yes. And you know you want it. When it feels heavy, it means that it's clutter. And you can get curious about it and figure out why it's feeling heavy. Why? What's the story that you're holding on to that's probably not doing you any good? You can choose to make a change. Maybe you didn't like, maybe has sleeves and you didn't like it with sleeves, but you cut off the sleeves and now it feels light. And you love this shirt and it's no longer clutter. So you can let it go. You can make a change. But know that, that that item status quo is clutter. Simply, it's clutter, and you can let it go. Now, does this question, does it feel light or heavy? Does it work for other categories? And the answer is yes, it works for everything. So I have a client, and every time she walked into her kitchen, she felt heavy. And this was a new kitchen. She had new cabinets and countertops and appliances. And yet she would walk in and it felt heavy. It did not feel light to her. So she used this question, does this kitchen feel light or heavy? Well, it felt heavy. Well, what was it about the kitchen that felt heavy? And she realized it was her cabinets. The color of the cabinets felt heavy to her. She painted the cabinets. And now she absolutely loves her kitchen. Every time she walks into it, she feels light. She feels lifted. And so that's what you get to do in your home. You get to use this question, does this feel light or heavy? If it feels light, it's right and you know it's not clutter. Okay, enjoy that question. Use that question and let me know how it lifts your light as you move forward on your lighter path. Thank you for joining us on this path to living lighter.
