Embrace the Process: Negative Feelings are Part of the Decluttering Adventure | with Heather Aardema

Heather Aardema explains why decluttering stirs up heavy feelings like doubt and fear, and why that's normal. She suggests drawing a circle split between the positive feelings you want and the difficult ones you're willing to tolerate, to move through them instead of getting stuck.

Before you begin decluttering, ask yourself, are you willing to experience some negative feelings as you move forward? Are you willing to experience some negative feelings? So often when we have a new project like a decluttering project in front of us, we want to feel energized and excited and eager. And the truth is, is that, yes, we might feel some of those feelings. However, we're probably not going to feel them until we get through the heavy stuff. And what I mean by the heavy stuff are the heavy feelings. So are you willing to feel some uncertainty? Are you willing to feel some doubt? Are you willing to feel some fear as you begin to declutter? Because if you are willing to feel those heavier feelings and stay with it, you will get through them and get to the other side. And so what I often recommend to my clients is that they draw a circle on a piece of paper and then put a line right through that circle. And on the right side of the circle, write down all of the positive feelings that you want to feel on this decluttering journey. And then on the other side of the circle, write down all of the heavy, lower vibrational feelings that you're willing to feel so that your dream can come true. And know that often we need to get through those lower vibrational feelings to get to the higher vibrational feelings. So we need to face the uncertainty, the questioning, before we can get to the excitement and the confidence. The human brain, the primitive human brain really is focused on three things. It's focused on maximizing pleasure, minimizing pain, and conserving energy. Decluttering takes energy. It takes a lot of energy in the beginning when it feels hard. And so if you tell yourself up front, hey, this might not be so easy. You might feel some heavier feelings and know or make those heavier feelings mean that you're on the right path, that you're doing the right things to create this lighter life. And so, yes, the brain, it wants to conserve energy. And because we know this, we get to say, okay, I am going to expect to feel some of these heavier feelings because I know if I face them, I know that I will then move through to the lighter feelings. And decluttering will then become fun. It will then become energizing, and it will become one of the best decisions that I make of my adult life. Okay, there you have it. You've got this.
