Fractional executives should build their ideal client profile around three things: companies they've already worked with, where they can prove success, and clients they actually want to keep serving. Specificity beats casting a wide net.

As a fractional executive, you need to define your ideal client profile, your icp, because for most everyone, it's related to clients and companies that they have worked with before. If you've not worked with SaaS companies in the financial sector throughout your entire career, it really doesn't make sense to identify those as your icp. So there are three steps in defining that. It has to be a group of clients and you've worked with before. You have to be truly able to say, been there, done that. You have to have done it successfully, not just because you think so, but because others have acknowledged your skill, ideally, publicly. And the third one is, it's a group you want to work with going forward, because now, outside of a corporate career, you have a choice. And we just tend to be better at things that we actually like to do.
