Henning Schwinum explains how leadership without formal authority aims to secure willing cooperation rather than obedience to positional power. He outlines four pillars: build trust; create alignment through communication; cultivate momentum by taking action (he emphasizes acting without asking permission); and inspire by connecting to a greater purpose.

Leading without authority is just a little bit harder, although essentially it's the same thing as leading with authority. The goal of leadership is to get others to willingly cooperate and engage rather than follow your directives because you're in a position of authority. So it does not matter if you have authority. There are four pillars for this kind of leadership. Build trust. Trust always comes first. Create alignment through the power of communication. Cultivate momentum, take actions and others will follow. And fourth, inspire. Believe by finding the greater purpose. I'm a believer in the third pillar I've seen time and time again, the power of taking actions. Too many mid level managers are merely executors of what was handed down to them. They seem to fall victim to circumstance. Instead, act on your ideas and do not ask for permission. Others will follow.
