+1 #1118: How to Carpe Diem Journal (v2)

Brian Johnson explains a Carpe Diem-style journaling practice (big three: Energy, Work, Love) updated to integrate three virtues tied to wellbeing—Gratitude, Hope, and Zest. He reviews the original ‘big three times two’ method, then walks through concrete journal entries showing gratitude prompts, hopeful long-term visions (10/25-year goals) and daily disciplined actions (zest) across energy, work, and love to move from intention to practice.

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another Optimize plus one. In our last plus one, we spent some more time with Robert Emmons as we talked about a new gratitude journaling practice I'm integrating into my daily carpe diem journaling. I actually did a video on this not too long ago where I talked about the process. It's called how to Journal Carpe Diem Style. Check out the link in the one today. I'd like to talk a little bit more about that. We've talked many times about our original carpe diem journaling process featuring our big three times two. Here's the super quick recap. In our Mastery series, we encourage you to get clarity on what we call the big three Energy plus work plus Love. Then we encourage you to get clarity on your optimist best identity for your energy, work and love. Who are you at your best? Energy wise, work wise and love wise. We spend a lot of time on this in the program. Then we ask what virtues does that best version of you embody? Then we challenge you to live them today. Enter carpe diem. That we think is one key way to move from theory to practice to mastery and win the ultimate game of life. And I've been playing around with another carpe diem journaling format. Same big three of energy plus work plus love. Then we run those through the top three virtues science says are most highly correlated with well being. Gratitude plus hope plus zest. The gratitude component is basically what we discussed in our last plus one. Then we throw in hope, where we quickly see the better future we're creating. Plus zest where we identify the disciplined action we'll take today to make that future a reality. Like so I'll share with you what I journaled the other day. So energy, work and love. It's going to be easier to see this on the site or in the app in the one copy. But we've got energy. I've got gratitude. I say God, thank you for the gift of my life. I am blessed to be alive and joyful and energized. Then I go to work. God, thank you for the gift of my vocation. I am blessed to be a student and teacher. Thank you for calling me to do this work. Thank you for my amazing team and our community of optimizers and coaches. Then love. I say God, thank you for blessing me with my beautiful family. You did a great job with my soulmate and our two precious gifts, Emerson and Eleanor. Then I do the hope right. So hope, energy, work and love. Wise Hope. I write down an arrow, actually, which we didn't capture in the actual copy here, but I write an arrow and I put ohms at 75, and then I put 365 at the base. So basically, I want to do a Spartan race at 75, easy day. And I want to be able to do a beast distance Spartan race 365 days a year. I want to be in that level of shape and ready to go. Then I move on to work, and I look at hope and work and I think of today, 10 years from now and 25 years from now. And I focus on the process. I focus on plus ones, PNs and 101s. Right. So look at where I am today in each of those facets. So plus ones, we've got a thousand. We're moving to 2,500 in 10 years. Hitting 10,000 in 25 years, that fires me up. PNs, we've got 500, almost 600. Moving to 1,000 in 10 years. I'm excited about that. And then 2,000 plus in 25 years and then 101. So we've got 50. And now we've got the Mastery series we're creating. And who knows what's going to come out in the 10, 25 years that's going out. I get fired up and I think about that and I write down 8, 22. What is it? 44. Right. I'm going to be 70 years old when I say, hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another plus one number. 10,000. That fires me up, that's hopeful for me, creates a vision of the future I'm fired up about and brings it back to today and the practice I'm engaged in. Then I go to love and practice some hope in love. I write down 50th, 4 hours, 21 minutes and 57 seconds. We'll celebrate. Alexander and I will celebrate our 50th anniversary. We just celebrated our 13th anniversary yesterday. Go us. Yeah. Then I write down me. I'll be 82. Alexander will be 78. E1, Emerson will be 44. E2 will be 40. That fires me up to imagine my kids being grown adults and hopefully being alive to celebrate our lives together in partnership with Alexandra. Then I write down soulmates. I want to be soulmates to not only my wife, but my kids. And we're going to talk about Soulmates 2.0 very soon. I talk about how I want to be a soulmate to you as well. Then I get to zest. So we've got gratitude We've got hope and then zest Energy, work and love. Energy Zest. What am I going to do Disciplined action today to have zest? Well, I have some very simple things. I hit the trail every day. I do my one plus 10 plus 100 plus 1000 plus 10,000 every day. The more I do that, the more I see that that creates this structure in my life. It makes it really hard to go like this when you've got that protocol. It creates that emotional stamina. And then also Digital sunset. Those are my top three things that keep me plugged in Trail 1 through 10,000 and Digital Sunset giving me that good night of sleep. That's how I create zest via disciplined action today in energy. Then how do I do that in work? I write down one number 4.5. I show up and do 4.5 hours of deep no inputs work often before I have any inputs come into my life. That's amazing. That's how I'm going to have the actualization of that thing I talked about in hope. And I can create at a level that I'm proud of and that hopefully serves profoundly. Then I move from work to love. What am I going to do to help make that hope for vision come to reality? I write down something simple. Am plus pm. I spend time with the kids in the morning giving Alexander some time. And I shut down complete and I'm fully present in deep love. That's all I need to write. And I see how I'm going to create the zest that's going to bring that hope to life. That's going to make me even more grateful in the future. So that's a quick look at at how I carpe diem via the big three times two. We're looking at it virtues wise. Join us in our Mastery series where I echo myself again. We spent two months helping you architect your masterpiece days and have fun rocking your carpe dieming. Let's seize the day today.
