+1 #597: The Price of Success

Brian Johnson delivers a short +1 episode encouraging viewers to determine the "price" required to achieve big goals and to commit to paying it daily. He quotes Scott Adams—"If you want success, figure out the price, then pay it"—and leads listeners through an exercise to name a top goal in three domains (energy, work, love), their high-level prices, and specific daily prices to pay.

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another Optimize plus one. In our last plus one, we talked about paying the price to achieve our wildly important goals, whatever they may be. I shared a partial accounting of the price I'll be paying to have a shot at one of my big goals. And we checked in on your accounting. How'd that go for you? Quick check in. Today I want to talk a little more about the whole idea of knowing the price of success and then getting busy paying it. Specifically, I want to talk about some Scott Adams wisdom on this subject. Here's how he puts it in how to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big. I quote one of the best pieces of advice I've ever heard goes something like this. If you want success, figure out the price, then pay it. It sounds trivial, he says, and obvious, but if you unpack the idea, it has extraordinary power. He continues by saying, I know a lot of people who wish they were rich or famous or otherwise fabulous. They wish they had yachts and servants and castles, and they wish they could travel the world in their own private jets. But these, he says, are mere wishes. Few of these wishful people have decided to have any of the things they wish for. It's a key difference. For once you decide, you take action. Wishing starts in the mind and generally stays there, he says. When you decide to be successful in a big way, it means you acknowledge the price and you're willing to pay it. End quote. So one more time, what do you want to achieve in your life? Perhaps you can pick one super big important goal. Or if you're feeling so inspired, we can break it down into our big three. What's super important to you? Energy wise? How about work wise and love wise? Think about it. Write it down if you're feeling so inspired. My number one energy goal is this. My number one work goal is this. And my number one love goal is this. Alright, you got it. Press pause. Jot that down. Awesome. Now, what's the price you will need to pay on a high level? Energy wise, what price do you need to pay? Work wise, what's your price? Love wise, what's your price? And let's drill in a little further and check in on the price we'll need to pay daily? Here's my daily energy price, my daily work price, and my daily love price. Let's decide to be successful in a big way, acknowledge the price and and commit to paying it every day.
