Brian Johnson (Optimize) summarizes a passage from Stan Beecham’s Elite Minds arguing that fear prevents people from reaching their potential and that conquering fear should be a primary life goal. He links the idea to Aristotle’s concept of eudaimonia and virtue ethics, noting courage as a key virtue for flourishing. The clip is a brief motivational reflection prompting the viewer to assess and overcome fear.

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another Optimize plus one. A few plus ones ago, we spent some time swimming with Abraham Maslow. As you may recall, he told us, if I was dropped out of a plane into the ocean and told the nearest land was a thousand miles away, I'd still swim. And he says, I despise the ones who gave up. Talk about relentless. We pulled that gem from Stan Beecham's Elite Minds. Today we're going to talk about another gem from that book. Beecham tells us, I quote, fear is keeping you from reaching your potential. Conquering fear should be your primary goal in life. I hereby declare that this is one of those let's pause and soak that in moments. We'll break it down into two parts. Part 1. Fear is keeping you from reaching your potential. Can you feel the truth in that? Your potential is out there. And the number one thing keeping you from reaching it? Fear. Note this isn't just a modern day mental toughness coach. Aristotle used slightly different language but said pretty much the exact same thing 2,500 years ago. In his vernacular, reaching your potential was becoming the best version of yourself. Eudaimon. That in his mind was was the most important thing we can do the highest good or summum bonum and led to a deep sense of well, being, flourishing, et cetera. Again, eudaimonia. And guess what? Do you remember how Aristotle told us to go about achieving that highest good? To live with virtue? And do you remember his number one virtue, courage? Why would he make courage his number one virtue? Because fear is keeping you from reaching your potential. Which leads us to part two. Conquering fear should be your primary goal in life. That's today's plus one. How's your fear? Let's conquer it.
