Brian Johnson pauses his Top 3 series to focus on other work, then reads Emerson's "Self-Reliance" on foolish consistency. He recommends The Social Dilemma to cut digital distraction and previews upcoming Top 3 categories: books, ancient wisdom, habits, nutrition, fitness.
You're listening to Optimize with Brian Johnson. More wisdom in Less time.
Hey guys, this is Bry. Welcome back to the Barnes Studio Top 3 Philosopher's Notes Edition. Those are 500 of my favorite books, 600 philosophers notes, and what I'm going to work on this morning, which is my top three favorite books of all time, which is the Tools Deep Work, Happy Together. And I think this is going to be the last one of these number ones for a while. I'm going to press the pause button. I got a lot to do focusing on these top threes. Getting the PNTVS crushing. I've enjoyed these and it's taken a little bit more of my energy and focus that I'm willing to give it. So soul force wise. So I'm going to focus on what's truly most important now. Pause button shall be pressed is the current plan until around the end of the year. I think I'll come back with these number ones. We'll see but I think I'll come back with these around the end of the year so we can make sure we kick off 20, 21 strong. In the meantime, on October 1st we're going to launch the top three series. So this is what I was working on this morning. It's a big stack. Top three favorite books of all time. There you go. Then we're gonna do the top three ancient wisdom books of all time today and then the top three habits books of all time today, Top three nutrition books and then weight loss. This was really fun to do. The two go together but they're distinct. If you need to lose weight, there's a few books I recommend and then general nutrition as well. And of course we'll talk about the optimized food rules. And that's today's deep work block times two and then it's hitting it for the next set. Yes, there's that. Let's recommit. Today is a day of recommitment. Today is day one. Yes sir, it is. I hereby recommit to practicing my philosophy today. That means soul force energy, focus on what's important now. And I will share a quote from Self Reliance. So you know I'm all about consistency, pride myself on my consistency. But there are some times when consistency can get in the way and you need to look at the data that's arising. And for me it was this was just starting to take up a decent chunk of my time uploading it. It was getting me more online than I wanted to be and realize, you know what it's an awesome idea. I'll come back to it. I think we'll do some more of them, but for now I've got some other stuff that's more important. So I don't want to have foolish consistency. Now, I once raised some money in my last business from a billionaire in his family. And we pivoted in our business, right? And I can't remember if we pivoted or I was thinking about pivoting, but he was. Again, this is a billionaire. He literally recited this entire quote by memory, right? This part of it. And again, this is Ralph Waldo Emerson. We named our son Emerson after Ralph Waldo Emerson. His essay Self Reliance is going to show up somewhere in our top three. It's so good. If you haven't read it yet, go read it. Trust thyself. Every heart vibrates to that iron string. But you got to know, for non conformity, society will whip you with its displeasure. 150 years ago, Emerson was telling us, do not be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society, a la Krishnamurti that we come back to all the time, right? Then he talks about this hobgoblins of small minds. He says a foolish consistency. Emphasis on foolish versus wise. There are times to be consistent. There are times to be willing to move. He says a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency, a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak what you think now in hard words and tomorrow. Speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict everything you said today. Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood. Is it so bad then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood in Socrates and Jesus and Luther and Copernicus and Galileo and Newton and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood. End quote, mic drop from Ralph Waldo Emerson. Now, again, there's wise consistency, there's foolish consistency. I think we probably have a plus one on that somewhere. There you go. Final number one for a while. Oh, I got to give a shout out to Calman on our team who recommended the Social Dilemma. Wow. Mind blowing documentary. I'm 15 or 20 minutes into it. Check it out. We talk all the time about conquering digital addiction. We've got Cal Newport's digital minimalism 101, endnotes, etc. The social dilemma on Netflix. If you haven't watched it yet or heard of it yet, go check that out. That's actually one of the inspirations for me is I'm spending just a little bit more time than I want to spend online, which is chipping away at what's really important to me now. So I'm going dark again.
Boom.
Phone's going to stay in the closet. I'm using it right now. I never used to use it. Not going to see me on YouTube anymore. Love you, Miss you. Hang out virtually and yeah, technology is an important thing to continue to master. Check out social dilemma. Cowman. Thanks for being awesome. That is all for today. Cannot wait. Step back. I like seeing this little stack. Cannot wait to share my top three. We're going to have 30 different top threes basically on every single aspect. Not every single, but a broad range of aspects of optimizing our lives, starting with the fundamentals that we've talked about. Right. So we've got. I'm really excited actually about the 30 different categories. So all time. And then habits, Ancient wisdom, modern science, nutrition, fitness, sleeping, breathing, focusing, celebrating. And then I've got the printout somewhere. You know, top Navy SEAL books, top Productivity books, top. Let's do this. You know, like Marie Forleo's Everything is Figureoutable, Jim Kwik's limitless five second rule. We're going to have fun with that. October 1st you can go to. The team is working on the page for it now. Optimize Metop 3 will be where that lives and as always, free trial at Optimize Me. Fired up. Let's finish this year strong. What's important to you, truly? What are your sole goals in life? What do you want to achieve in your life? How can you break that down into the number one goal that you have through the end of the year? What are you going to do in 2021 that's going to make you proud? How about 2022? What are the next two, three, four, five years look like? Get clear on that and then cultivate your soul. Force energy times, focus times. What's important now? Consistently on what's truly most important. When as always, today. All right. Love you, appreciate you. Look forward to seeing you in other contexts. For now. See you.
