10 Big Ideas to Optimize Your Nutrition

Brian Johnson outlines ten nutrition principles from his Optimize Coach program, starting with the claim that food is the number-one lever for health. He recommends three core rules: stop drinking sugar, eat real food, and implement a 13-hour eating window. Johnson frames nutrition as both personal medicine and a way to resist a dysfunctional food system.

Hi, this is Brian. I want to give you a little context on what you're about to watch. This is an introduction to one of our Mastery series Sessions. We have 25 classes like this as part of our 300 day optimized coach certification program in which we help people move from theory to practice to mastery so so they can master themselves, serve heroically and empower others to do the same. Now, We've had nearly 2,000 people from nearly 70 countries go through our optimized coach program. About half of the people who go through the program are coaches who want to take their coaching practice to the next level or they are aspiring coaches who want to become full time coaches. The other half, and it's weird because almost exactly how half want to do one or the other, are going through the program because they want to master their lives and become better executives, educators, doctors, entrepreneurs, moms, dads, and humans, even though they don't plan to be professional coaches per se. You can learn more about the program at Optimize Me Coach. For now, I'm excited to share the introduction to one of those Mastery series sessions. I hope you love it and if you're feeling it, we'd be honored to welcome you to our Optimize Coach program. Let's change the world one person at a time together, starting with you and me today. Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to the Optimize Mastery series. Today we've got module six Pack part two. Our first fundamental is going to be on eating. I am going to suggest that this is the number one fundamental, the number one lever that we can pull to change our lives, our family's lives and the world. The number one lever changing how you eat. That might sound like an exaggeration, but it is not. We can do a lot when we optimize our nutrition, both for ourselves and at a societal level. I'm excited to jump in. And of course, last session was big picture fundamentals dig deep. If you're all in to go high, right? We've got to get our foundation, our fundamentals dialed in. We have seven eating, moving, sleeping, breathing, focusing, celebrating and prospering. Which literally means to go forward with hope. Right? We're going to have fun with that. And then of course we're going to wrap it up with our final module prep practicing our philosophy. You as optimists, you embodied. So module six, eat. We're going to start this one with an asterisk. Never started one with an asterisk before now, but an important asterisk. Three things we need to qualify this class with, number one, we are not medical doctors. We don't play when on TV unless we do or unless we are medical doctors. Actually, we have a lot of medical doctors who have participated in our program, but if you aren't, let's recognize that fact that we are not. Two, if you are working with yourself on these ideas and or a client on nutritional ideas that we're going to explore and they are on medication, then they need to consult their doctors. Because when you start making some simple shifts relating to your nutrition, what you're eating, et cetera, you very well may not need the medications you're on or need to adjust them appropriately. So, one, we're not doctors. Two, if you're on medication or working with someone who is, have them consult with their doctor before they go all in on this stuff, which is very exciting news because you can affect change quickly. And three, we like to say that there is no the way in general, that's particularly true with nutrition. So I'm agnostic as to what approach you take, whether it's vegan or paleo or anything in between or outside of that. What I'm gonna challenge you to do is think about these core fundamentals. We're going to take an 8020 look at some unassailable ideas that are universally applicable across any way that you choose to show up. And I'm going to encourage you to embrace that idiosyncratic style that you find right for you while experimenting with different approaches. But from an optimized perspective. We're not going to be dogmatic. We're going to be agnostic with an emphasis on these core fundamentals. That's our asterisk. And now we are ready to jump in. We've got 10 ideas, as always, starting with number one. We talk about this a lot, but we're going to talk about it even more today. We need you to be what? A radiant exemplar, particularly you who are going through and have the intention of being certified as an optimized coach. We need you to be a radiant exemplar and an heroic iconoclast. We're going to revisit the definition of heroic and iconoclast. There are three things that go into being an iconoclast. The first is you need to have a different vision. An iconoclast is willing to break icons. They're willing to look at what's not working in culture and to break and smash those icons. Right? But that starts with a vision of what's not Working and what needs to change. The second thing an iconoclast does, and we'll talk about this in depth, is they need to have the courage to affect change. And the third thing is they need to be trustworthy. If you want to lead and you want to change yourself, your family, your community, the world, you need to be trustworthy. Which is why I keep on saying, be a radiant exemplar. And at the end, we're going to talk about the standards to which we're going to hold you, if you so choose to be held and be held accountable, which is what the number one word. When I reviewed all the inputs in our first class, the request we had from our coaches was hold me accountable really challenged me to go for mastery rather than just going through the motions. So we're going to talk about that in our final idea. But you radiant exemplar, heroic iconoclast, then we're going to give you, playfully, the blue pill. Only in this case, the blue pill is the one you want to swallow, not the red pill. We want you to see just how dysfunctional our food system is. I'm going to suggest that we think about it with a few different fun stories and we can talk about this whole conversation for a weekend. I'm going to get through it in a matter of minutes by talking about a mad and sad gorilla spending $12 billion while eating Smuckers on a hot dog and drinking soda at a pan can event, a pancreatic cancer event. We're going to weave all those little themes together to show you just how dysfunctional our food system is. And our society is by extension, one more time. It is no measure of well being to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society. So we're going to look at just how profoundly sick our society is. You know the numbers, but we're going to revisit them and connect them to our nutrition. Which leads us to our third big idea. Here's the problem. In the second, here's the solution. Food as medicine. We're going to talk about some fascinating research that shows that if you prescribe medicine, literally, I'm going to prescribe healthy food and in fact, we're going to pay for it. And then we're going to watch and see what happens to your health care costs and your overall well being. Fascinating research. We're going to talk about dealing with root causes of chronic disease and other ailments versus just dealing with the symptoms. We're going to bring in a fun metaphor, spray painting brown leaves green Emerson's going to virtually make a cameo and share his thoughts on the subject as well as in My little Emerson. So first you as a heroic iconoclast, you see the world and all the problems, then you do something about it. One, two, three. Then we're going to have three optimized food rules, right? And then we're going to have a fourth kind of meta rule. The first rule, which is our fourth big idea is number one rule, according to Mark Hyman, great book Food Fix, which I highly recommend. Stop drinking your sugar. He says it's the fastest way to change your life and to change the world and of course your family, etc. Stop drinking sugar. That's soda and asterisk parents, fruit juice, not a health food. We'll talk about that in depth. That's our first food rule. Stop drinking your sugar. The second one is eat real food. Michael Pollan says eat real food. Mostly plants, not too much. I like that. We're going to go with eat real food, right? And stop eating or throw out the, the factory food. We're going to talk about three different forms of factory food. We're going to talk about ultra processed food, factory farmed animal food, and we're going to talk about factory fat, fake fats, vegetable oils. Each of those needs to go. That's our second food rule. The third food rule is eating sunsets. Right? We've got digital sunsets, last input tech. Guess what we want to have last input food. Stop eating. Have an eating sunset. The research here is fascinating. We're basically going to encourage you to give yourself the night off. Don't eat when it's dark is how Dave Asprey puts it. There's research on how that benefits us from a weight perspective, from an energy perspective, from a cancer perspective. This is important. 13 hours is going to be the magic number. We want to think about a window of 13 hours before between your last meal and and your next meal the next day. We'll do some math on that as we go. So then we have again our three food rules. Stop drinking your sugar. Eat real food. Throw out the factory food and take the night off eating sunset. Then we're going to have fun saying, you know what, B. Act like a professional optimizer and your favorite philosopher. So a lot of people say you can arrive at the optimal place nutrition wise simply by eating the way your great, great, great, great, great, great, great pre industrial revolution grandparents. So I'm going to say, hey, think of your favorite philosopher who's over 300 years old act like them and then be a professional optimizer. We're going to have fun connecting a zero to the phi symbol that represents a philosopher. More on that in a moment. Then we're going to talk about 8, 9, and 10. 8 is going to be you tapping into your iconoclastic superpowers. Essentially, we're going to revisit our thoughts on motivational theory and put it into practice as it relates to our nutrition. You're going to activate your energy, you're going to have the right why, you're going to do your behavior model, design B equals math, making your kryptonites invisible, etc. Related to your nutrition. The ninth idea is going to be conquerors writing food prescriptions. I'm going to talk about the difference between. We're going to talk about the difference between a conqueror and. And a patient. Fascinating etymology. There. We are conquerors, which means to seek successfully. To seek successfully a patient, just to get to the punchline already, is to submit. We're not going to submit. We're going to seek successfully. We're going to write food prescriptions for ourselves. We're also going to purge our pantry of food we know we shouldn't have in there, which is where all nutrition books start. Get rid of the temptations, make it invisible, buy your willpower at the store, etc. Then the 10th idea is one more time. You being a radiant exemplar and heroic iconoclast, being willing to do the hard work, to have the strength for two to protect yourself, your family from this dysfunction in our society. And I'm going to remind us this is the number one lever we can pull. And I'm going to. We're going to chat about the standard to which we're going to hold you if you want to get certified as an optimized coach and kind of the number one predictor of your morbidity. We want to get really, really solid in this one domain. We'll talk about that at the end. That's our overview. As you can probably tell, I'm fired up. This is one of my favorite subjects, and this is one of the ways we're going to help you change your life fundamentally and permanently. All right, Our first big idea. You are a radiant exemplar and an heroic iconoclast. Again, why we spend so much time in our program on the Mastery series and client number zero is you will always be, if you want to become a coach, your greatest asset, right? Your business as a coach, you and your consciousness and who you are, your energetic presence, your physical well being, your creativity, all of that, your energy, et cetera, et cetera, is going to be your number one asset. Therefore, we need you to dial it in. And again, eating, we have so much power, we can pull these levers to effect extraordinary change. Now, it shouldn't be so difficult to be healthy. It should be a pretty straightforward thing. And the good news is it actually is a pretty straightforward thing to maintain your optimal weight, to have great energy. But our society is so sick and so profoundly dysfunctional that when we conform, it makes it very, very difficult for us to maintain a high degree of health. Which is why, again, Krishnamurti said, And this is 50 years ago, it is no measure of your health or well being to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society. So we need to step back and see what's going on. We need to look at our world from a place that is not immersed in it long enough to see just how dysfunctional it is. Pilar Gerasimo wrote a whole book on this subject called Healthy Deviant. You need to be a deviant in today's world from a healthy perspective. If you want to be normal, well, then you're going to be overweight or obese. You're going to be subject to all the chronic diseases that are literally killing us. Right? We have the COVID 19 pandemic still going strong as I'm filming this. But the underlying issue there is really chronic disease. You look at the morbidity and who's dying from this, it's those who are already vulnerable and exposed to the chronic disease. Now, 80% of chronic diseases, whether that's heart disease or cancer or diabetes and all the other leading causes of death are preventable. 80%. And you know what the number one lever is? It's nutrition. Yet 60% of our diet comes from ultra processed food that we're going to talk about today. And guess what? We when you increase your diet by 10%, for every 10% of your diet that comes from processed food, you increase your risk of chronic disease by 14%. Every 10% processed food, you increase your risk of chronic disease by 14%. Which is why we have 2 billion overweight obese people on this planet and why we suffer from as much chronic disease as we do. So you and I and our community needs to step out of that heroically to protect us from the dysfunction that's going on and be willing to be iconoclasts. We can check out the note on the science of iconoclasm called Iconoclast by one of the world's leading neuroscientists. He says three things we need to think about to be an iconoclast. And again, one who was willing to break an icon of a culture and say, that is not right. And I propose this. The first thing is you need to have a vision of what's broken and what's possible. You need to see things differently. You need to step out. Then you need to have the courage to do some smashing, to propose a creative destruction process of, no more of this. Let's create that. So you have the vision and you have the courage to take action, to be in integrity with that vision. You aspire to create in your life, your family and the world. And the third thing is you need to be trustworthy, right? How do you develop trust? The number one way is be in integrity. Psychologists talk about something called the halo effect, right? So when you have a certain level of beauty or intelligence or any other external obvious variable, there's a halo that goes on you, right? And when we are in integrity, living with virtue and having that come through our essence and our energy by practicing our philosophy consistently, we are more likely to be trustworthy. So we want to. This is again why I want us to be radiant exemplars. I want people to feel us, that they can feel that we're doing the work and ask us, what are you doing? I was just on a zoom call. One of our optimized local virtual zoom meetups led by Khaled and Asma, and one of their participants in there, they invited me to join them and it was awesome. Hung out, extraordinary. Reminded me of our graduation. One of the optimized coaches, year one in that program, Ash Ref High 5's brother, said that he's lost 22 pounds so far in the program. He's tripled his sales. Guess what happens when you do that? You start looking a little different, you start moving a little different. People start saying, what are you doing? And you're not proselytizing. You're being the change you want to see. And there's a magnetism to that level of integrity, which again, is why Gandhi told us, be the change you want to see. And why we continue to come back to that again and again and again. As Ralph Watto Emerson says, who you are, what you do, speak so loudly I cannot hear what you say. So one more time, let's be radiance exemplars. Let's be heroic iconoclasts. That leads us to our next idea. Where we're going to look at what's up, create a new vision of what's possible. I'm going to give a little P.S. here just because it's an important point I want to make sure we address. When we talk about chronic diseases, it is a heck of a lot easier to prevent them, particularly cancer and obviously heart disease. If you have a heart attack, you have a very high chance of dying. It's very easy. It's much easier to prevent those things than it is to reverse those things. You can. And if you're experiencing those challenges, whether it's heart disease or cancer or diabetes, well, diabetes you absolutely can reverse astonishingly quickly with a few different tweaks to your protocol. But cancer, you want to work hard to prevent that vis a vis the reversal. And again, you can reverse, but it's a lot easier to prevent. So take these ideas seriously and know that your nutrition is affecting you to a much higher degree than you may think. And of course, your kids, your spouses, your colleagues, your clients, etc. Hey, this is Brian again. I hope you enjoyed that overview of a Mastery Series session and got some wisdom out of it. You can apply to your life today. What was it again? You can learn more about our Optimize Coach program at Optimize Me Coach. And here's a fun little video we put together featuring some of our optimized coach graduates describing what they got out of our program and why they loved it so much. You can also check out hundreds of other testimonials at Optimize Me Coach. Have an awesome day and let's do this.
This year, everything changed.
The single best year of my life.
It is the most essential course for living your optimist self, being who you need to be. It gave me clarity of what I want to do in life.
If you want to totally change your life, join Optimize. Like I look at New Year's resolutions every year. I'm really good at making them. But it's funny because I look back and they were always the same goals, like every single year. I can actually do new goals this next year because I've put into practice and it's just part of my life. It's part of my routine. It's who I am. And that's amazing to be able to move forward like that, with that confidence.
Through the program, I've been able to see how much more can I improve, how many things I thought I was doing okay or well that were not because I was perhaps lacking the right information or being Very conscious about the practice. So totally my energy improved my mood, my vitality. So as I said before, even though I was doing okay, I thought I was doing great, I was doing okay compared to now. So now you can maybe feel it, sense it much more.
Life, it's really catapulted me in new.
Directions and has helped me be a.
Better leader and coach.
I've been somebody who I feel like I hold space for a lot of people, but there wasn't somebody to hold the space for me. Becoming an optimizer was one of those places where like, oh, wow, this is what that feels like. And it was really powerful the way.
That Brian simplifies a lot of the data that he has. Like, he gets the science behind it, but because he uses that every single day in his own life, he makes it really practical and very simple to apply it very easily. Like if you listen to something on one day, you could be practicing on that same day.
We start repeating it or living it.
Without conscious effort because it just becomes.
Ingrained in who we are.
Everyone has their own story that they're kind of living through. And Optimize really helped me to not play the victim in my story, but play the hero and solve my problems.
The piece that was missing my whole life was the part about obstacles. And it's okay to think about what could go wrong. In fact, it's necessary to think about those things and to plan for them. And that's been the most life changing thing for me over the last year. I've had multiple sclerosis for 30 years. And this year, the work that I did in Optimize dramatically changed my medical history.
If you've ever wanted to improve and develop and reach a higher version of yourself, but have been putting it off, this is the time. Now is the time. From a person. I'm not getting paid to do this. I would say go and sign up and do the hard work. This will change your life.
