Brian Johnson explores Byron Katie's idea of accepting reality as it is, not as resignation but as a way to turn hard things into wisdom. Acceptance lets you stop fighting what happened and start building what's next.
You're listening to Optimize with Bryan Johnson More Wisdom in Less Time this is a mini chapter from Brian's book A Philosopher's Notes. You can find it on Amazon.
Loving what Is Byron Katie tells us that whenever she argues with reality, she loses, but only every time. I love that. Arguing with reality is a really silly idea. What's happened has happened, and no amount of complaining on our part is going to change it. So while we may want to create a brighter future, the first step is always acceptance. And for the record, this acceptance isn't some my life sucks and I accept my craptastic fate kind of thing. It's more like an although this situation kind of blows overall, my life rocks and I'm going to accept what's happening and alchemize it into wisdom fuel as I continue to create my ideal life. That's one way to love what is. Little Footnote Check out Byron Katie's awesome book Loving what Is for some solid goodness on what she calls the work an inquiry process to help deal with reality more effectively. We've got a Philosopher's note available on that as well.
