APN24 - Sizes: You vs. Your Problems
17 Dec 2025 · 0 min
Brian Johnson compares character size to how you react to small problems. A size-2 person freaks out over a stubbed toe; a size-9 stays calm and grateful. Real growth means living your values every day, like fertilizer for your character.
You're listening to Optimize with Bryan Johnson More Wisdom in Less Time this is a mini chapter from Brian's book A Philosopher's Notes. You can find it on Amazon.
Sizes you versus your problems. Let's say on a scale of 1 to 10, you you're a size 1 or 2 person. You stub your toe in the morning or someone cuts you off on your way to work. Those are size one problems. How do you respond? You'll probably get all pissy, huh? And for the record, if you're the kind of person who honks and yells and gets all road ragey, you're about a 28. Now let's say you're a size 8 or 9 person. Same stubbed toe and same person cutting you off. How do you respond? Now you might just wince, take a deep breath, appreciate the fact that you're alive and your biggest problem at that moment is a stubbed toe, and you might even bless that person who's in such a rush and wish them a safe trip and a more peaceful day. Keep that in mind the next time you yell at someone on the freeway or otherwise get upset by something so trivial. No need for us to be such small people in these precious lives of ours, huh? P.S. the way to go from one to ten simple live your values moment to moment. Little by little. Become more in integrity so that what you say is important to you is what you actually do. Integrity. It's organic fertilizer for your character. Footnote Here the idea of looking at the size of your problems vis a vis the size of your character is from T. Harv Eker's Secrets of the Millionaire Mind. We've got a note on that one as well. And that wraps up this section on optimism. Hope you enjoyed. And now we will head into the section on Purpose and Self Awareness.
