Podcast mini-chapter from Brian Johnson’s A Philosopher’s Notes explaining the ‘emotional guidance system’ concept (via Esther and Jerry Hicks). Uses a car fuel-gauge metaphor to describe emotions as indicators of connection to one’s higher/divine self and recommends daily practices (meditation, journaling, exercise, appreciation, movement, connection) to ‘top off’ emotional energy and avoid feeling depleted.

Our Emotional Guidance System Esther and Jerry Hicks tell us that our emotions are kind of like our car's fuel gauge, measuring just how connected we are to good old source. When we're feeling great, that'd be loving, appreciative, empowered and joyful. We're connected to the divine within us. Tank is full. All good. When we're feeling all depressed, helpless, disempowered, that's basically our emotional guidance system or fuel gauge telling us we're on E disconnected from the highest within us. Eek. Now the Hickses make the very important point that if we're driving our car, notice we're approaching E. We we don't whine and moan and get all up in our stuff. We simply pull over at the next gas station and fill up, right? Well, they say we should approach our emotions the same way. If we're feeling all crankysaurus rex, we just need to notice we're approaching E and simply fill up by pulling over at the nearest source energy station, AKA doing whatever it is that makes us feel most connected to our highest selves. Whether that's dancing, meditation, walking, running, hiking, yoga, Tai chi, playing with our babies, cuddling with our loves, whatever. Now personally, when I drive our sweet little Prius around, I don't like to let it get lower than a quarter tank as I'm not a huge fan of worrying about running out of gas in the middle of the road. Same thing with my life. I've run out of emotional gas one too many times. Now. I pretty much like to top off that old tank daily, starting with my AM meditation, journaling and exercise, and ending with my PM Meditation and appreciations. It's really hard for me to have a really bad day when I make sure the tank is close to full. Highly recommend it. How about you? Are you driving near E way too often? What are your key filler up practices you can rock to? Stay connected and feeling great. Think about that. Come back to those fundamentals again and again and again. Stay focused. 4.
