Arambhashura: Let's Be Heroes All The Way to the Summit (Heroic +1 #1,635)
17 Dec 2025 · 3 min
Brian Johnson explains why we start strong on big goals then quit in the messy middle. He uses the Sanskrit word Arambhashura, which means being a hero at the beginning, to name the pattern, then argues for Arete: the harder work of staying excellent all the way through.
Chapters
Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another Arete plus one degree. This is the second to last chapter in Little Micro Chapter in Arete. Activate your heroic potential. It comes in the seventh objective. Activate your superpower. One of the most important ideas I know. Aram Bashura. Let's be heroes all the way to the summit. So you're fired up. Maybe you attended a weekend event or had an amazing insight about what you're here to do with your life. Or maybe it's New Year's Day and you're about to embark on what you hope will be an epically great year, installing new habits and deleting the bad ones like an optimizing superhero. Or maybe you're finishing a book like this. Fantastic. You're fired up. Cue your walk on music. Let's do this. And let's make sure you don't tiptoe out the back door X days later when things start getting a little tough and the whole process isn't quite as fun as it was on day one. Get this. The phenomenon of starting out with a jumbo ton of enthusiasm and then given up shortly thereafter is such a common part of humanity that thousands of years ago they actually came up with a word for it in Sanskrit. A rambashura. To be a hero in the beginning. Can you believe that they actually had a word for that thing? We've all done way more times than we'd like to admit. Aramba Shura. To be a hero in the beginning. Captain Obvious here. Let's not be heroes in the beginning. Let's make it through those rough spots where we don't feel like doing what we said we'd do. And do it. Be a hero all the way to the summit. And now's a good time to remember. The ancient Romans had a word for this as well. They told us we don't want to be heroes just in the beginning or only halfway up the rugged mountain of our heroic quest. Getting stuck in the middle. Medius of a rugged mountain. Ocaris. That's mediocrity. The key to summiting. Diligent, patient, persistent excellence. In a word, Arete. Cue the walk on music. It's day one. Always. We're all in. In always. Let's go hero.
