Brian Johnson (Arete/Heroic +1 micro-chapter) presents Stephen Covey’s distinction: be efficient with time and tasks, but prioritize being effective with people. He warns that treating people (especially children) as items to optimize leads to emotional ineffectiveness, urges giving fully present time, and calls out technology/phone distraction as the main obstacle to relational presence.

Welcome back to another Arete 1 degree another micro chapter from Arete Activate youe Heroic Potential 450 one of my all time favorite ideas, including this one efficient versus effective. One's good for time, the other is good for people. Here's another potentially life changing idea from Stephen Covey's the seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Covey tells us that we can be efficient with time and tasks, but that we need to focus on being effective with people. Think about that for a moment. Efficient versus Effective as you may have noticed, if we try to be efficient with people, especially with our kids who you might remember spell love T I M E we can often find ourselves quite efficient and equally ineffective. The fact is, relationships can be messy and they definitely take fully present time. So let's show the people in our lives just how much we love them by giving them more time of the fully present variety. And as always, let's remember that our greatest obstacle to giving that fully present time and creating effectiveness in our relationships is almost always technology. Why the distracted rush with the people we love so we can scroll through our smartphones 10 more times today? Let's take those wasted moments and minutes and put them into our relationships today.
