Brian Johnson delivers a short, motivational mini-chapter ("Entheos Lighthouses") exploring a Joseph Campbell question: are we the bulb that carries light or the light itself? He embraces both and uses the bulb-vs-light metaphor to urge listeners to "plug in" to the divine within (entheos) and shine as radiant, consistent sources of creativity, joy, love, kindness, generosity, appreciation, and enthusiasm—ideally as 1,000-watt lighthouse bulbs guiding others. He briefly notes that "entheos" (Greek) means "God within" and is the root of "enthusiasm," then closes with an encouragement to embody that energy.

Hi, this is Brian with another mini chapter from a Philosopher's Notes. This one's called Entheos Lighthouses. Joseph Campbell once asked, what am I? Am I the bulb that carries the light, or am I the light of which the bulb is a vehicle? I love that question, and I say both. And I think that question provides the perfect metaphor for us to understand our role in the process of connecting to and expressing the divine within us. From my perspective, it seems pretty obvious that our job and our highest goal is is to see just how much God we can get flowing through us in this precious hero's journey of ours. Just how brightly and consistently can we shine our light of creativity and joy and love and kindness and generosity and appreciation and radiant enthusiasm out into the world? Now we can be a 20 watt bulb that flickers, sometimes plugged in, sometimes unplugged and bound to blow up if a huge amount of energy goes through us. Or we can be a 1000 watt lighthouse bulb that's unwaveringly plugged into the highest within us, that shines with a radiant enthusiasm that guides our community to their highest selves. It's up to us. I say we plug in and shine and in the process become Entheos lighthouses. I didn't talk about it in this chapter, but in Theos those are two little Greek words. In Theos it means God within and it's actually the root of the word enthusiasm. So when we are enthusiastic, we literally have God within us. The divine is within us. We're shining with a radiant enthusiasm that only comes when we plug into our highest selves. So let's do that. Let's be bright 1000 watt lighthouse bulbs for our world and our families and our communities and get those Entheos lighthouses rockin. Hope you enjoyed. And here's to plugging in and shining. Have another awesome day. Share Morgan Soon.
