Energy 101 - Behind-the-Scenes Overview!

A behind-the-scenes video by Brian Johnson introducing an upcoming class 'Energy101'. He outlines the course's goal—to help people actualize potential by optimizing energy—and previews topics including nutrition, movement, sleep, breathing/meditation, mitochondrial health, mindset/optimism, digital habits, and habit algorithms. The talk frames energy as the body's capacity for work (Greek 'energia') and emphasizes practical rules, marginal gains, and lifestyle changes to increase vitality.

Hey guys, what's up? This is Brian. Long time no video in general, in particular, behind the scenes. I'm excited to get going with some videos and get back on that PNTVs, the plus ones, and of course the 101s. Anyway, I need to create a video for our genius designer Yasmin so she can create one of her workbooks and all the icons for the class. Our schedule, production schedule is a little bit off. So I'm gonna do this to get ahead of the game. And I thought, you know what? I'll just use this as an excuse to say hello and to give you a behind the scenes look at my preparation. So here we are. Next class, teaching. Tomorrow morning, Energy101. Subtitle to be determined. Still working on that. But basically the idea here is that if we want to actualize our potential, obviously we need to have energy, right? If we have a hard time getting out of bed, we're going to have a hard time actualizing our potential and giving our gifts to the world. So this is a really important class I've been thinking about teaching for quite a while. And it's going to integrate eating, our Nutrition 101, Movement 101, Sleep 101, Breathing 101, Meditation 101. A lot of classes I'm going to bring together and kind of use this as a context to distill the absolute most important stuff. But starting at the top, Energy101. If you look at the ancient etymological root of energy, it's. It's energia, however you pronounce that in Greek, which literally means in work. En Aragon, in work. So the actual definition is a capacity for work or vigorous activity. So I'm going to make the case that our energy levels are really our soul's engine, right? Our souls need our physical energy in order to. For us to give ourselves the most fully to the world. So I draw this little Maslow thing all the time, right? His pyramid that I represent. Excuse me, in this context, right? So this is what we're capable of being. We need to have a really, really strong foundation. And our energy literally the engine through which we're able to show up powerfully in work, in love, and everything that's important to us. And then I'm going to make the point in the class that mitochondria, the little microscopic powerhouses that exist within nearly every cell in our body, those are literally the energy centers that we need to pay a lot of attention to. There are a quadrillion mitochondrion and mitochondria in our bodies, that's 16 zeros. That's a lot. 10 million times a billion. A billion of them can fit on a pinhead, yet in aggregate they weigh constitute about 10% of our body weight. That's incredible. But we're not thinking about our mitochondria. We need to. We'll talk about that. And then the second idea is we need to step all the way back, I think, and see that we live in a profoundly sick society. Krishnamurti once said that it's no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society. So we need to be iconoclasts about it and break some icons. Right? We need to be willing to have a new vision, have the courage to go out and live differently, then be an exemplar of what we think needs to happen in our culture and in our society. That requires commitment. I'm going to make the case that, meh, I'm good enough. That's not good enough. If we want to make a difference in the world, we need to be exceptions. We need to live heroically as we discuss all the time. That means we need to have the strength for two in order to make a difference in the world. And again, requires commitment, requires seeing the world differently, breaking some icons, being willing to deal with the pushback you'll get from family and friends. Why are you doing that? I can't. This is fine. Well, no, it's not. It actually isn't okay that one in two men will be diagnosed with cancer and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer. That's not okay. And we know the root of these issues and other diseases. And by the way, it's mitochondrial dysfunction. I get excited about this. We'll talk about this idea of you think you're at an 8, but you're really at a 2. You think you're at an 8 intensity wise of how you're showing up, but you're really at a 2. It's a great idea from one of the authors who profile, you need to turn up the heat to 212 degrees. That's when water boils. Our third idea we'll talk about is rule number one, the energy is there. Your body wants to be energized, it wants to be healthy. And the reality is if you're sick or you're older, you're dealing with issues, you just need to work harder, you need to play the margins even closer. But the energy is there, the vitality is there. We need to create the environment through which that energy can express itself and quit doing the things that get in the way. We'll talk about the Golden Buddha story, which is awesome. And we'll also talk about golden seeds. We just planted a little, I like to call it a micro farm in our backyard. And we've got 75 different seeds, varieties of vegetables, etc. We're moving up to 101. But it's. It's staggering to me that you can take a seed in a packet, it will hang out in that packet. You know, nothing's happening. But you put it in soil, give it a little water and a little sun, and boom, within days, it's sprouting. That latent potential is there. It's the same thing with our energy. The latent energy is there. We just need to make sure we're putting it in the right soil. We'll talk about again how to do that, but we need to see that. That the energy is there. We got to believe it. Then we'll talk about the optimist. You. In order to change our behaviors and to truly get fired up to do all these things, we've got to see ourselves at our absolute best. What would you look like if you were actually living the life you're capable of living? I'm going to challenge you to come up with 10 things. Let's make it 11 things. Champions do more that you would do if you had no fear. If you had absolutely no fear, what would you do with your life? Okay, cool. Let's create the energy and go work on the first one you're going to choose to go crush. We need to see our best selves. We need to believe that we can actually achieve that. We'll talk about the science of hope again. And then we need to be it. We need to act like we are that best version of ourselves now. Moment to moment to moment. And then we start making decisions. Each thing we do is either an energizer or. Or it's an enervator. Energizer. Enervator. The word enervator, enervate literally means. The definition is to weaken. It literally means to take away muscle. So you and I are making decisions. We're making decisions moment to moment to moment. We're either energizing ourselves or we're not. And then we need to look at the opportunity to give ourselves marginal gifts. Those little things matter. When you're playing the game with a high level of intensity and commitment to making a difference in the world and actualizing your potential little Things matter. It's the essence of peak performance. But these are gifts. These aren't chores. A victim looks at these things as, oh, I have to do this, I have to turn off my phone and get a good night of sleep or I've got to eat a salad. That's victim talk. That's not a hero. A hero gets excited about these opportunities, realizing that life is a gift and what can I do to give back in equal measure? We'll talk about that more. And then we've got eating, moving, sleeping, breathing, etc. Eating. We'll talk about 8023 things that we need to think about. Sugar, flour, vegetable oils, we'll talk about in some more detail. Then the optimal fuel. You've got two different tanks. You can burn sugar for fuel primarily, or fat for fuel. We'll talk about the data and details there. And then we'll talk about trash cans. If you wanted to make a quick difference in your life, throw away the carbage, the refined processed food, all that sugar, all that flour, which usually has vegetable oils and the bad fats with it, we need to get rid of it. Longer the shelf life, the lower your life, etc. Eating is super important, obviously for our energy. And I almost did optimal weight 101 for this class before this class. We're going to do that next. Carrying excess weight is the greatest predictor of all the things you don't want in your life. So I'm not a weight loss guy per se, but we're going to come back and we're going to talk about that because it shouldn't be as hard as it is for a lot of people to maintain effortlessly maintain their optimal weight. So we'll come back to that in another class. Then we have movement. So we've got movement and exercise. Both are important, right? And then we've got a training equation that we're going to talk about. Then we got to remember the training equals work plus recovery. And then we want to remember we want to be healthy and fit. Too many people sacrifice their health for fitness and in short, they're training too hard. So we need to slow down, train smart. Remember the catabolic phase and the anabolic phase and make sure we're not active and sedentary. You don't want to be that. Seven sleep plus Zambonis, which is naps. We need to make a decision again. Do we want to be energized or do you want to be entertained? The number one way we deal with this is reduce technology at night. But get this. Did you know guys like Tom Brady goes to bed at 8:30 every night? Roger Federer, the great tennis player, his goal is 11 or 12 hours of sleep a day. He says if he doesn't get that, he doesn't feel right and he's going to get injured. LeBron James, same thing. 12 is his target when he's training hard. We'll talk about a soccer club that built a 200 million pound facility and they put 80 bedrooms in to their new amazing sports complex such that their team on home games could sleep there the night before. Sleep is the secret sauce for peak performance. We're going to talk about why it's so important. If you're not getting adequate sleep, there's just, there's no way your energy is just going to be destroyed. There's no way you're going to consistently show up powerfully. Super important. We know it. We just need to make a decision that we want to be energized and actualized rather than entertained. Reduce the technology. 8. Breathe, meditate and have energized tranquility. We need to be able to flip the switch and be on and inspired, yet at the same time still grounded breathing. Well, meditating is huge. We'll review some of the top three ideas from Breathing101. Talk about why meditation is so important again and encourage you to create your practice. Ninth big idea is to oscillate. We need to make waves. You can't always be on. If you're always on, you will be burned out. So we'll talk about that. We'll talk about matching your energy to your task. When you're at your best, you should be doing your most challenging, important work. A lot of people don't. They go straight into reactive fill instead of going deep. So we're going to talk about the importance of that and then taking true breaks. You know there's again tons of research on the importance of taking real breaks rather than continuing to knock yourself out with technology, email, texts, et cetera. 10th Big Idea will be to dominate. Do you want energy? Well then dominate your life. To rule over is what the word dominate means. We want to do things like conquering our digital addiction again. We had a whole class on that. How are you doing with that? Are you dominating it or are you being hacked by the 9 trillion dollar attention economy? We got to figure out what we're doing here and what's working and what's not working. This is by far digital technology. It's amazing. Obviously I'm using technology to record this and share with you. But it's also our number one enervator. We've got to identify it and quit weakening ourselves and use it to energize ourselves. We want to approach life. We don't want to avoid our challenges. You avoid challenges, you're going to dissipate energy. Not good. We want to approach our challenges and we want to win what's important now. We want to know what's important and then we want to do it and then we want to repeat. And in the process, we have mastery of micro moments. So George Leonard says the great Aikido master wrote a book called Mastery that we need to reclaim lost moments. Every single moment of our lives is an opportunity to practice and that's energizing. But if you're doing things, oh, I don't really want to do it, then that's enervating. And we need to use those micro moments, as my coach Phil Stutz describes them, as opportunities to tap into that universal life force and master ourselves. And in the process, remember the big things. All the big things we want to achieve in our lives, they come through the small things, the micro. The smallest little things give us a portal into the biggest and best. And then finally, 11 champions do more. 11 big idea is energy Algorithms. Another class we recently did was Optimizing Algorithms 101. Right. You got to write rules and scripts and systems so that you just automatically do things using your willpower wisely, which is finite, to install habits that run on autopilot such that you can do what you're here to do and spiral up. So the question I'm going to have is, what's the number one thing you know, you could be doing to optimize your energy and the number one thing you need to stop doing? I come back to this all the time. Self care Kryptonite. Make your best your baseline. It's all one big game. Play it well, hero. That is a very quick look at this class. I'm super excited about it. It'll probably be like 75, 90 minutes and there you go. So, yeah, so I prepare for these. Each one of these has its own thing. I always hand write and I go through it a number of times, just kind of getting a flow to it. Etc, that is my way to prepare. Look forward to sharing more. I hear the kids, they're ready for me. All right, see ya.
