Brian Johnson outlines ten ideas for 2019: operationalizing virtue through a eudaimonic identity, focusing on energy, work, and love, building heroic habits, designing a masterpiece day with morning and evening bookends, and using community, symbols, and mantras to commit to the year.

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to the Optimal Living 101 Masterclass Series. Today I'm excited to chat about Greatest year ever 2019. How to make this the greatest year of your life in in, of course, an unending string of such awesome years. As always, we've got 10 big ideas. Let's take a quick look and then we will jump in. The first big idea, which is really the theme of my life and our work together in 2019, operationalizing virtue. We're gonna playfully talk about more arete, more virtue, less chit chat. Let's move from theory to practice. What's truly operationalize our virtues that we talk about all the time. We're going to revisit and remind ourselves of why we do the work we do together. We're going to talk about Aristotle, eudaimonium, eudaimonia, the summum bonum. The highest good. The ultimate purpose of our lives is to express that best version of ourselves, Maslow style. What one can be, one must be. How arete virtue when moment to moment to moment. We want to operationalize that. We will talk about that. The second big idea is to help us get clarity on our eudaimonic identity. The optimist best version of ourselves. We're going to take a quick trip to hell to get clarity on that. We'll also work on some eulogies, attend our own funerals, and then we're going to take a quick trip to heaven via Michelangelo's studio and again get clear on that best version of ourselves. Then the third big idea is our big three. We talk about it a lot. Well, I want to go deep into it, right? So as we look forward into 2019, let's make it the best year of our lives by getting clarity on energy, work and love. If you've heard me talk about that a lot, but you haven't actually put pen to paper and journaled and actually gotten clarity on what your identity is in each of those domains, what your true soul goals are, and what your algorithms are that you're gonna run. We'll talk about each of those in this context today. I encourage you to do so. Again, more arete, less chit chat. Fourth big idea. We're gonna go through energy. Fifth big idea. We're gonna go through work. Sixth big idea. We're gonna go through love again, drilling down into the specific exercises of what we can do to get clarity so we can live in integrity with that highest version of Ourselves. We're also going to talk about the social platform that we've been kind of. We launched a beta over a year ago and then frankly, I kind of just hit it. We didn't do a whole lot with it. We're going to dust that off and bring it back and use that as a vehicle to help us connect not just with the wisdom, but with one another. We'll talk about how to go about optimizing our lives via wisdom, community, and this operationalization and doing some of these exercises in community together online. 7th Big idea. We're going to remind ourselves of the 100,000 time improvement we can make by creating optimized algorithms. And we're also going to talk about how to get a quadrillion times better over the next decade. Plus one plus one plus one style. That'll be fun. Algorithms, heroic habits, identity, repeated beingness, who you are repeatedly is what it's all about. The eighth big idea. We're going to take all of that big three, the algorithms, etc. And lead ourselves to a masterpiece day. So one of the things I'm excited to get real clear on in terms of how we can serve you is creating something called a masterpiece day maker. Carpe diem. This is how you're going to create an awesome day. So we've got the AM bookends, the PM bookends. We've got our most important behavioral changes. Energy, work in love wise. Plug it into that masterpiece day. Seize the day. Carpe diem style. Our ninth Big idea decisions. We'll talk about Michelangelo's most famous statue, David, and how that relates to you. We're going to talk about disciplines. Phil Stutz in a recent session told me about the three different types of disciplines. Right. There's reactive discipline, doing the right thing in a particular moment. There's structural discipline, which is kind of our protocol. And then there's expansive discipline, which is basically expanding into the next best version of ourselves, moment to moment to moment. That one's the hardest. It requires the most important virtue that Aristotle talks about to become a eudaimon. To live eudaimonically. Courage. Which leads us to the tenth Big idea. To dare or not to dare. That is the question. I'm going to share a couple pages worth of quotes from Emerson, Campbell and some other wise individuals who have shaped me over the last several weeks as I've really stepped back and looked at what I feel called to do. We're gonna talk about fear doors and how your infinite potential exists just on the other side of that door that you're hesitating to open. And I'll again share some stories on my own journey. We're gonna talk about hero calls and answering those calls and what happens when you do. Along with heroic valence. Ambivalence is an interesting word. Ambivalence. Right? Ambivalence. It means on both sides of strength. We want to look at where we might be ambivalent in our lives and be willing to not have the ambivalence but heroic valence to go all in on something that matters to us and to stick with it gritty wise. We're also going to talk about symbols that we can use to capture the essence of who we are committed to being in 2019. That that identity from which we're committed to living. You may notice a little symbol I have. I've got a little Spartan wristband. I'm going to talk about the significance of that. I'm going to talk about Joe decenna, the founder of Spartan race and one of his symbols and encourage you to create a symbol. We're also going to talk about some mantras that are guiding my life. I'm going to suggest you think of some key words that can become thematic for 2019. And that's a quick look at how I think we can approach it to make it the greatest year of our lives. Let's dive in.
