Brian Johnson created Philosopher's Notes to distill 100 influential books into summaries, PDFs, and 20-minute audio recordings. He built this after giving himself a PhD in optimal living. The project includes a free video series, a $99 digital bundle, and a scholarship program that has funded over 1,300 people.

Hey, this is Brian. Welcome to philosophersnotes.com I appreciate you taking the time to learn more about what we're up to, and I'm excited to give you an overview of what philosopher's notes are all about, how I came up with the idea, why I'm so excited about it, and give you a quick tour of the website so you can kind of navigate and see what we have to offer, what we have available, and what you can have fun with. So first, I've always been passionate about understanding what makes great people great, what makes extraordinary people tick, what is it that they do that sets them apart from everybody else, and how can I live a more extraordinarily awesome life? And how can I inspire and empower other people to do the same thing? Now I spent I studied psychology at UCLA as an undergraduate. I thought about getting my PhD in psychology or philosophy or religious studies, but I just couldn't find a program that really integrated everything I wanted to study. So I wound up actually going to law school. Dropped out of law school. That wasn't it. Then I started a business and sold it, became a philosopher for a couple years exploring these ideas. Then I built and sold another business. When I was running my last business called zods, a social networking website for people passionate about changing the world, I realized that wasn't quite my dharma. I was a pretty good entrepreneur, but I wasn't really a genius at it. And I was really figuring out what is my dharma, what is my deepest purpose. And I decided that I wanted to give myself my own PhD. I couldn't find a program that integrated everything I wanted to study, from creativity to philosophy and positive psychology and mysticism and religions and wealth creation and abundance and business and modern day self development and fitness and nutrition. All the things that go into optimizing our health and basically all the things that go into optimal living. I decided to give myself a PhD in optimal living and I figured I'd get a Master's when I had distilled 100 of my favorite books from old school classics like the Bhagavad Gita and the Dhammapada and Marcus Aurelius, Meditations to the Tao Te Ching and Confucius, Analects, Emerson, Nietzsche and a couple of other Stoic philosophers. We have 10 old school classics. And then I wanted to study the positive psychologists and what they have to say. I just love the science of happiness, really. Understanding what we know scientifically works and essentially what positive psychologists are doing are proving what we've known philosophically and what the self development gurus are talking about today. But I just love the idea of scientifically studying this stuff. So we've got over a dozen 12 or 14 positive psychology classics from the how of Happiness, which is just an extraordinary book by Sonia Lieborsky. 2 Authentic Happiness by Martin Seligman, Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, two of the leading pioneers in the positive psychology movement. We've got a couple of books Happier and the Pursuit of Perfect by Tal Ben Shahar, one of my favorite teachers right now. And a bunch of other great classics in positive psychology including Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning and Abraham Maslow, Rollo May. Some extraordinary teachers and extraordinary thinkers. Then we moved into or I moved into 20th century classics. I wanted to study what Osho had to say and Krishnamurti and Ayn Rand and Joseph Campbell. And you can check out the books link right above and you can see all 100 notes that I profile. And I also wanted to study modern day self development. So I wanted to see what all the modern gurus had to say from Deepak Chopra the to Wayne Dyer, Esther and Jerry Hicks, Gay Hendricks, Robin Sharma, Dan Millman. These are some of the teachers Jack Canfield, Marci Schaimoff, people that have had an extraordinarily deep influence on me and my work and wanted to see what they had to say that was common in the positive psychology literature, in the old school classics and the 20th century classics. And then as I gained a foundation in all of this classic wisdom, I I want to understand how I can give myself to the world and participate in our economy and get paid to do this and to follow my passion. So I studied abundance creation. We have over 10 abundance books from Rich Dad, Poor dad, the Secrets of the Millionaire Mind and a bunch of other Spiritual Economics, the Science of Getting Rich, A bunch of other great books that talk about the importance of shaping our consciousness if we want to have the type of consciousness that naturally and effortlessly speak, circulates abundance in every sense throughout our lives. So I figured when I did 100 books and I created quick, fun, simple summaries of all those books where I pulled out what I call the big ideas, those sections you underline and you asterisks and you fold the page over on. I call those big ideas. Every book has anywhere from 10 to 25, 50 of them in there. What I did was was I pulled out about 10 of them for every one of the books and I created six page PDF philosopher's notes here's one of them right here called Positive Addiction. A book called Positive Addiction. It's one of the positive psychology books. It's a six page PDF. I've got highlighting and all that kind of stuff on it. You can see a sample. If you go to the very bottom of this page, you should see a sign up form. Give us your email address, we'll send you three samples, I'll send you a couple of follow up emails and you won't hear from us again if you don't want to. And you can also, at the end of that process, sign up to receive a daily free newsletter where I pull out a big idea. We've got 30,000 people, I don't even know, 35,000 maybe now, who have signed up for the samples and get a monthly newsletter. And about 15,000 people who get an email from us daily with inspirational big ideas. I get all kinds of awesome emails from people letting me know they actually start their day with those. And I'm pretty inspired by that. So Anyway, we've got 106 page PDF philosopher's notes pulling out the big ideas from each of these books. Each of those notes I recorded professionally. Sound quality is awesome. 20 minute mp3s that you can listen to on your ipod or on your MP3 player or whatever. People tell me they listen to a note or two on the way to work, on the way home from work while they're mowing the lawn, working out, doing errands or doing chores around the house. Really cool. And I've had some amazing positive feedback on that. So that's the basic idea of Philosopher's Notes. We've got a hundred of them. We've got two packages. You can click on Buy now the link Buy now, which should be somewhere blue button. Click on that and you have two options. You can get a digital version of each of the PDFs and MP3s for 100 bucks, 99 bucks. We priced it, we believe really reasonably. People have told us it's the best money they've ever spent. And we've also got an option where you can get a physical product. We've got a workbook, which is really cool. Keller gets a little funny there, but it's a big workbook with all 100 printed out. And you can get a little MP3 player. It's a little shuffle that has 30 hours of content preloaded on it. I'm not sure what the price is on that. Check out the Buy now link and you can see. So that's the basic idea of Philosopher's Notes. Start with the samples I would suggest, and then if money is an issue for you, don't worry, we've got a scholarship. You can see a link up there for scholarships. I'm committed to building a business that's just extraordinarily cool. I want you to interact with our business and say, that's the way I do it. That's the standard that we've done everything on our site, the quality of the notes, the beauty of this website and just doing the right thing. And I don't want money to get in the way of anyone having access to this content. So if money's an issue, just go to the scholarship link. Just let us know why you're so excited about Philosopher's Notes and we will hook you up with the digital version. And I'm excited, honored and proud to be able to support you. We've given away over 1300, maybe over 1500 scholarships now. I've read nearly every application. I'm often brought to tears. And I'm inspired to be able to support you if you need the support. And know that if you're able to buy a Philosopher's Note, we are matching one Philosopher's Note we give away for every one that we sell. And I'll give away five to one if that's what it takes. But as you purchase, you're also supporting us, and giving them away actually gives me tears in my eyes just thinking about it. So I'm really excited about that and appreciate your support and I'm excited to be able to support you if you need it. So that's the scholarships. We've also got a PNTV link up there. I've recorded all 100 of these notes that usually take me 20 minutes to record the PDF for in 10 minutes. Super high energy, intense philosopher's notes TV episodes, all 100. That's 1,000 minutes of free content. Why did I do it? Because I love this and I want to inspire you. My commitment is to inspire and empower. I hope you love it. And that's an overview. I think we've got some testimonials up there, too. We've been blessed to get some great feedback. That's a fraction of the blessings that we've received from our subscribers, but we've also got a lot of quotes. Check out the very bottom. We've got links to quotes, big ideas, other cool stuff, and you can connect with me on Facebook, on Twitter. I'd love to see you. And that's Philosopher's Notes. I'M Brian Johnson. I hope that you enjoy it, and I look forward to sharing everything I'm learning in the months and years and decades ahead. Give you a big hug and a high five if you're here, and have an awesome day. Talk to you soon. Bye.
