You're listening to Optimize with Bryan Johnson. More wisdom in less time.
My question was about to work in self awareness. I know that your work is all about that. So I'm a scientist, I'm aware of the science part of it, but then the emotional and the part of leading and building this team and, you know, and driving that company to, you know, these massive gas and in big venture capitalism, things like that. I am struggling to work in my self awareness. So I know that your work is all about the driver habit. I am brave and, well, I wouldn't be here brave, to be fair. So I'm good with the drivers and the courage, but the self awareness, I'm very much struggling. So what would be your advice on that?
Yeah, what a great question, because I think it's so important for all of us to understand our own engines. Okay. And one of the things I find that I've done for a long time. So when I was growing up, we used to go on vacations, and because there were four kids, my dad would not buy plane tickets. We'd drive everywhere. So we'd drive like 18, 20 hours to go to our vacation. Well, when I was a kid, we didn't have any Walkmans or iPhones or CD players. So I would literally stare out the window for hours. Okay. And I remember that. And I realized that that was actually a very powerful experience for me because when I would stare out the window, I would just think and I'd visualize and I'd ask myself questions. I would get into my head and I think that because of what we have available to us today, which is everything at our fingertips, we often forget to take the time to introspect effectively and get into our heads and spend some time with ourselves. Because we have the phone. We can put on music, we can play the app, we can watch the Netflix. Wherever we are. We have so many escape tools at our disposal. For a lot of us, escapism has become a reaction. Right? I mean, what happens when you're standing in line at the grocery store or standing in line waiting to get on your flight? Okay, if you're going to be waiting a couple minutes, what does everybody do? They pull out their phone. I mean, look at. Just walk around the airport and just watch people. Every single person pretty much is looking at their phone. Okay? Now, I'm not judging that. I'm just saying what we need to be cognizant of is we need to say, hey, am I doing this too often without thinking about it, or should I Put the phone away. Should I put everything away and just sit and just think, you know, and just ask myself some questions about myself? Okay, Better Questions applies. The Better Question tool applies to ourselves as well. We can ask better questions about ourselves and come up with good answers, you know, and think about how we show up, think about why we do what we do, think about goals, think about visualizations, think about, you know, whatever it is. So my advice would be anybody and you, but anybody else who's also interested in being more self aware and kind of exploring that more often is to deliberately take, take count of those escape tools that are around us and take moments very deliberately in our day to just introspect. And you can do this in. I do this a lot of times when I go running, I go running in the woods where I live and I don't, I don't listen to music, I don't time myself. I'm just by myself and I just run in the woods. I enjoy the nature and my brain just starts, starts turning. You know, it's a great time for me to introspect and I would say I would just offer to you take, take that time and do it more deliberately because it is important and you'll certainly find some value from it and it'll also help you, you'll feel more relaxed and happy because of it.
