This is a transcript of a live coaching session from the Optimize Coach program featuring Brandon Guyer responding to a participant who asks how to enjoy the present while pursuing future goals. Guyer emphasizes a process-oriented approach: treat progress like climbing a staircase (focus on the next step), be "obsessed with right now," use journaling/reflection after setbacks, expect tough times, balance 80–90% process focus with keeping a vision for motivation, and view outcome goals as background fuel rather than primary attention.

About being content in the moment and then setting goals for future and being a little bit unhappy in the current moment because that's been a drive for me to aim for excellence and better outcomes in the future. So just wondering how you've balanced that drive to do better and be better in the future, but also enjoy the moment and be happy in the moment.
Man, that's so true. And that's looking back on my career and I know other athletes would say this, they wish, you know, their whole goal be the best player they can be. All they're focused on is doing that so they don't enjoy the moment as much. And one of the things looking back, I don't think I enjoyed the career as much because I was so obsessed with getting to the big leagues and staying there. I didn't really ever sit back and wow, I'm in the big league. This is awesome. Now I want to stay here 10 years, all that kind of stuff. But it is everything and just the feeling of never being exonerated, that kind of stuff. But you are right and I find we talked earlier, it is just process, process, process. If you can think of that staircase and your process every stair, every day, trying to dominate the day and the way we get to where we want to be in the future, we got to be exceptional at right now. That's the name of the game. Everything you have, what's important now, what can you do right now? Expect tough times. I mean, this part of life, we're all going to have them. So we're going to have those tough times. So think about, okay, what can I do to overcome that? Get up a stair on that staircase. Whether it's reflecting or journaling what you can do to learn from it. Okay, I might have fell down. It was a rough day. I'm going to go up two stairs tomorrow. Having that outcome goal in your mind a little bit. Remember 80, 90% process. But to stay motivated, have a vision of where you want to go. Think about that a little bit. But be obsessed with right now. All you have right now, good or bad just happened to you. Okay, good. What's important now? How am I going to get back up that staircase? So hopefully that helps answers you.
Thank you so much. Yeah, very helpful. Thank you.
