How to read a book! (Or, at least how *I* read a book! :)

A short YouTube video by Brian Johnson describing his personal approach to reading and annotating books. He explains practical techniques (skimming back cover/flap, jumping to resonant chapters, underlining, folding pages, marking pull-quotes for his ‘Philosopher’s Notes’), lists books he's reading, and announces upcoming projects including Volume Two of A Philosopher's Notes and a video series tied to the book's mini-chapters.

Hey guys, what's up? This is Brian. Long time Norecord. I am super excited to record more videos soon. This is our house in Ecuador. It is nighttime. We've got to do some videos and show you more of it. Here's my beautiful goddess. Hi darling, what's up? Long time no see. How you doing? So first thing I did when I arrived was unpack a hundred plus books. I'm working on PN Volume two. We're going to do a bunch of nutrition books. I've got all kinds of books on more positive psychology. We've got some relationship books, we've got some creativity books, some integral books, some journals. So I can get some more of that done. But the reason why I turned on the camera, here's my little office over here. Was Roy on Facebook, just asked me how I read a book and I started to explain how I highlight things and I figured, you know what, it would be easier if I just showed you a book. So I just finished the first 25 notes for volume two. Really, really excited about it. We've got healthy at 100. Talent is overrated, the Rave Diet, True Success, the China Study, dare to be 100. Why meditate? A Guide to Rational Living Mindset, A Complaint Free World, the Way, the Bodhisattva and Sattva and a bunch of other titles that I'm going to share in January. But basically when I go through a book, I am not bashful with my pen. So quick overview of how I read a book, first thing I do is check it out. Read the back. Read the inside flap. The back flap. And I learned this from, I think it was Michael Geld who wrote how to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci. The idea is 80, 20 principle. You can get 80% of the goodness and 20% of the content. So if you flip through a book, you can get a lot of good stuff out of it quickly. Now if you want to get everything out of it, it's a good idea to start from the beginning and just rock it. But oftentimes what you might do is just look at the table of contents, find a chapter that really resonates with you and there's nothing that says you have to start on page one and read all the way through. If you like chapter five, go straight to chapter five and dance around. Too often we get excited about a book, but we give it up because we think we need to go from page one to page 300 and we get kind of bored midway through. Follow your heart on this. Trust yourself and go where you feel inspired. Anyway, when I read, I'm marking it up all the time, right? I'm underlining and I'm folding over the page and I'm underlining and I make little notes for myself, like pq, That's a pull quote that will go on the sidebar of my philosopher's notes. If you've read my notes, you know what I'm talking about there. But I kind of fold it over a little bit right there, if it's kind of good. And then if it's really good, I actually fold over. You can't see because I unfolded it. This page used to be folded over like that, right? So I found a big idea, just an awesome idea. One of the 10, maybe 15 best ideas in the whole book. Underline the heck out of it, write some notes on it of what it reminds me about. I fold over the page, right? And then when I'm done, I've got like 15. You can't see it now because I already went through it, but I've got like 15 really, really folded over in half pages. And if I want to go back through this book, I can easily pick it up and go through it. Now, of course, I write notes on it, which is as much for you and sharing it with you as it is for me. It's a perfect way for me to just kind of ground that wisdom into my consciousness. And then by the time I edit it and record an MP3 and do a TV show on it, I know it pretty well. It's grooved in there. So that's how I read a book. Keys are read books you're passionate about. Don't feel like you've got to read a book and finish it just because you started it. Be willing to dance around and then don't be bashful, marking it up and folding over stuff. This book, I marked up every. I mean, this is just amazing. Albert Ellis, the founder really, of cognitive behavioral therapy. Really good book. Why meditate? This is another one I just marked up. Really, really good. Just record the note on that. But basically, have fun. I read more than one book at once sometimes. Although sometimes I just love to start a book and see if I can finish it in the same day, you know, or see if I can finish it by the end of the weekend and set little goals like that. This is amazing. The China Study. We're going to talk a lot more about nutrition. I'm passionate about it. The skill, to me, how little we know about the science. I want to go deep into that. Over the next year. True success. This is awesome. Rape Diet Talent is overrated. This is awesome. We did a lot of books on genius. Talent is overrated. The Talent Code mindset. I'm going to do a lot more books on creativity as well. So anyway, that's a quick look at how I read a book. Some of the ideas anyway of what I do and how I implement effective reading styles. Hope you got something out of that. Look forward to sharing more with you soon. I'm going to do a lot of videos next year. Super excited about it. Oh wait, how about this book? I haven't even shown my book off yet so A philosopher's notes. So excited about it. These are the little mini chapters. I'm going to go through this in detail and I'm actually going to do a video on every single one of the chapters. There are a hundred mini chapters in here and I'm going to go off and create a little video on each of them. I'm creating a webpage website for that and I'm going to share more with that soon. We're actually already almost sold out of the first wave of books, so we're printing a new wave starting next week. 100% recycled paper, FSC approved paper with soy ink. I'm really, really excited about it and we'll have that ready by the end of January. So there you go. Hope you're doing great. Look forward to sharing lots of wisdom with you soon. Let's get a view of beautiful goddess. You want to say goodnight? Adios.
