Let's Be Flexible (Rather than Rigid or Chaotic)

A short Optimal Living 101 video by Brian Johnson presenting Dan Siegel’s concept of flexibility (mindsight). It explains flexibility as a balance between structure and spontaneity—visualized as a river flowing between banks of rigidity (too much structure) and chaos (too much spontaneity)—and encourages viewers to self-check which extreme they lean toward to increase well-being.

Hey, guys, how are you? This is Brian with another Optimal Living 101 video. This one's going to be another quick one. Today we're going to talk about let's be flexible rather than rigid or chaotic. Let's be flexible rather than rigid or chaotic. So this is an idea from the work of a friend of mine and a favorite teacher, Dan Siegel, one of the world's leading neuroscientists, and he talks about something called mindsight. He has a lot of different principles to create mindsight. One of my favorites is an idea called flexibility. And he tells us that flexibility in our responses, that we choose just how we live our lives, is one of the hallmarks of a happy and healthy person. Flexibility. Now, he likes to say that flexibility is kind of like a river that's flowing between two banks, the banks of rigidity. On one side, you have rigidity, on the other side, you have chaos. And the banks for that river are structure. You want a certain amount of structure and spontaneity. You want a certain amount of spontaneity. So those are kind of the banks for the river of flexibility, structure, and spontaneity. Now, if you have too much structure and you get kind of locked into this really, really, really, really, really authoritarian, everything's got to be exactly this way every single day. Structure, you get into rigidity, you're overflowing, you're flooding. This side, this bank is overflowed with too much structure, you get rigidity. Ouch. Eek. Now, the other side is spontaneity. You need spontaneity. That's one of the banks that rep river flows through. But if you have too much spontaneity, if you have no structure at all, you fall into chaos. So what we want is very simple. We want to have a healthy amount of structure. We want to have a healthy amount of spontaneity. And through those two little banks, we flow with flexibility. So check in, and if you're struggling and you're not feeling as blissful as you might be able to feel joyful on a consistent basis, what might you be lacking? Are you lacking structure and you're a little bit too far into the chaos, or are you lacking spontaneity and you're too far into the rigidity, let's choose our most flexible response and create a really flexible dynamic in our lives. And that flexibility is going to help us engage more optimally. So there you go. Quick look. Let's be flexible rather than rigid or chaotic. How might you be being rigid or perhaps chaotic in different domains of your life. Think about that. Hope you enjoyed, share more with you soon. Have another awesome day. See ya.
