You're listening to Optimize with Bryan Johnson. More wisdom in less time. Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to the Optimize Mastery series. Today we've got module four, Carpe Diem part six. We started with the big picture. Then we moved on to the PM bookend, the AM bookend and. And then we got our energy dialed in to give it to our work and to our love which is going to be the focus of our time together today. You know the drill. Modules 1, 2, 3. Eudaimonology, Hero Ology, the big three times two. When do we practice our philosophy? Today we're actually going to extend this from six sessions to seven. There are seven days in a week. Michael's going to join us and lead a discussion on Carpe. One week. Em. How do we take the rhythms we've been creating in our day to day lives and apply them on a weekly basis? Then we're going to move into the next module which is on algorithms. Another one of my favorite subjects. We're going to use our willpower wisely to install habits that run on autopilot. Big picture with that. Then we're going to help you install the keystone habits that can truly change your lives. Then we're gonna help you delete the kryptonites that might be diminishing the quality of your lives before moving on to the next and second to last module on our fundies. Big picture there why they're so important. Then Eating, Moving, sleeping, breathing. Being present, Being grateful and being prosperous. Moving forward with hope into what the final module will be on Optimus U. Virtue embodied. Fired up. Let's talk about love today. As always, we've got 10 big ideas plus a bonus for the coaches. The first one is. Can you guess it? Yes. Today's the day. Are you seeing the rhythms of your days? PM am seeing those rhythms. We're going to talk about the master's steps. We've talked about infinite steps. We're going to talk about the master steps. And we're going to talk about the Master's true love before moving on to the second big idea, which is one more time. Identity management. The big three times too. Energy, Work. Love. Identity Drives our virtues. Drives our behaviors. Who are you at your love best? I'm going to suggest you turn pro one more time. A professional lover of wisdom, AKA philosopher. A professional hero, AKA protector. Whose secret weapon is love. And. And whose superpower is love. And I'm gonna suggest you turn pro and become a professional soulmate. The whole game. We're gonna Play with love is to connect to one another's souls, which is our third big idea. We're gonna redefine love. We're gonna lean into some Barbara Fredrickson wisdom and move beyond a love that's simply focused on our families and our dearest friends. She would call that love 1.0, into a bigger sense of love. We're gonna talk about 0.0, 1.0, your family, of course, 2.0, 3.0, 8.0 and infinity.0. Each of those will have its own idea today. And we're going to make another distinction. If you recall, in energy, our big distinction was energized tranquility versus enervated anxiety. Then in work, our big distinction was genius work versus mediocre work. Today it's going to be soul connection versus disconnected despair. When we don't connect to our souls, we can't give ourselves most fully to the world and connect with other people's highest version of themselves, their inner daimon. Again, remember, daimon means soul. The game we're playing is to high five our inner souls, which is love 0.0 for ourselves. We've got to do the work, connect with our souls so we can move into Love 1.0, which is connecting with our families, creating a culture in which we're connecting deeply. Rather than disconnecting and staring at our smartphones. I'm going to playfully say our souls are not staring at our smartphones. Connect. Fill up your loved ones with your presence. Then we're going to move into Love 2.0, which is a Barbara Fredrickson idea. We're going to find micro moments of positivity resonance throughout our days. We're going to look for the best in everyone we interact with on a daily basis. Then love 3.0, we call that heroic love. We're going to talk about compassion, which is to suffer with very important aspect of humanity. But then there's encouragement, which is an under celebrated virtue. An aspect of love we can suffer with or we can have courage with. We want to encourage those around us to love challenges as we do the same. Then we're going to go to love 8.0. Your work. We spend roughly eight hours at work. How do you bring love to your work? We're going to talk about purpose 2.0. We're going to talk about some big ideas from the conscious capitalism movement and bringing love to your work. We're going to get spicy on that little fun acronym. Then we're going to talk about Love Infinity zero, loving it all we're to going, we can have a fun representation of that infinity symbol and remind ourselves of that energy times, focus times, what's important now consistently equals what equals infinity. Well, we want to bring that to our love. Which brings us to the tenth idea, which is going to be target practice. We're going to bring that as a kind of bookend back into our work together today. As I was preparing for this, I had fun seeing Apollo, our archer, the patron God of philosophy, with Cupid. So we're gonna have fun doing target practice, shooting love arrows throughout our days. We're gonna start with a reflection practice and seeing all the awesome in those different aspects of love right now. Then going out and actively practicing this throughout the day. Then, coaches gonna challenge you one more time to be the change so we can change the world together. Starting with you and me to today. Let's jump in. All right, big idea number one. One more time. Today's the day. That's the last time I'm going to say it in this context. Six repetitions over the last six weeks. Hopefully it stuck. As I said, Michael's going to bring it home with session number seven. Carpe wicum. Seven days in a week. Seven sessions in our module here. See the rhythms on your day to day basis and on your weekly basis. What's fun is, as I was preparing for this, I found a card that I got when Emerson and I went to go visit the Navy SEAL training facilities. Was invited by a couple of the guys that trained the seals to come down and give a talk for their mental performance working group. I said that'd be an absolute honor. Yes, of course. One small request. Navy seals or Emerson's heroes, Can he get a tour? They gave us a tour, and I came home with a few different things, one of which was a card from the guy who runs mentorship down there. Amazing, humble hero on the front of this card, which they give to their graduates in the BUDS Naval Seal training program. Earn your trident every day. A trident is a pin that Navy SEALs get when they become Navy SEALs. But they need to earn that trident every day. Every single day. We're never done. We're never exonerated. That's the whole point of this carpe diem module. So I thought it was fun that I saw this as I was preparing for this perfect encapsulation. Now we're also going to talk about the master steps and the master's true love. So we talked about limitless steps over the last couple of sessions, and I want to put an Asterisk on that. Because as exciting as it is to have exponential growth, we're just going up. Oftentimes we can get a little bit naive about it and think that that's just an up and to the right curve. You decide you're going to improve your life and boom, you magically do. So, of course, insert philosophical laugh track here. That's never how it works. It's a messy process. We want to know that it is not this. It's more like, oh, wow, sometimes backwards and then up and to the right eventually. And those gains are aggregated and compounded. But it. But it's a messy process. The master gets that. And the master knows, as George Leonard says in his great book Mastery, that sometimes you make three steps forward, but then you slip back two steps or even three or four steps. Sometimes you need to crawl back to where you were before. That's just how it is. But the master stays in the game. Which leads us to the master's true love. This is a session on love. The master's true love, George Leonard again tells us, is the process we love, not just the outcomes. The outcomes are nice, but those are byproducts of the process. We're committed. We also learn to love plateaus. So not only do we think it should go like this, right straight up, no challenges, rather than the wiggly line zigzagging up, we also get a little bit bored when we hit a plateau. You get big gains, weekend workshop, other exciting gains, then you hit a plateau, right? Then you get another gain. But a lot of people, when they hit the plateau, they bail. And George Leonard says, no, no, no, no. The master learns to love the plateau. And he shares that. One of the warmest moments in his journey was when he hit a plateau. Things weren't as exciting as they were, yet he was able to rub his hands together and say, ah, another plateau. And he got back to work on the practice of his philosophy. We need to remember that the true master of loves the process more than anything now. The master is so in love with the process and with the practice that for every mile he or she takes toward his or her destination, they hope the destination gets two miles further away. Think about that. For every mile the master takes towards his destination, he or she hopes the destination actually gets two miles further away. Why? Because. Because they're so in love with the moment to moment to moment practice of optimizing to become the actualized, best version of themselves, knowing they're never going to get there, because there is no there there.
