Mastery Series Module V: Algorithms - Part 3: Delete
17 Dec 2025 · 10 min
Brian Johnson walks through eliminating your worst habit by starting with identity, naming the single behavior that sabotages you most, then making it invisible and hard to do. He uses the pickle-versus-cucumber idea: habits calcify fast, so catch them early and recommit decisively.

You're listening to Optimize with Bryan Johnson. More wisdom in less time. Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to the Optimize Mastery series. Today we've got module five algorithms, part three. We are going to focus on deleting your number one Kryptonite habit. As you may recall, last week we installed your number one keystone habit. Before looking at the whole big picture game of becoming a world class AI programmer. How's your number one habit coming along? Have you mapped it? ABCD it, you got your prompt in a good spot, you got your ability dialed in, your motivation high, etc. Let's keep on working on that as we basically follow the same script, but reverse a few things for our deletion efforts. If we're talking about becoming world class AI, ancient intelligent programmers, ancient intelligence programmers, then we want to get really good at squishing the bugs. That's all that's happening here. You got some bad habits, we're just running some faulty algorithms. We've got to have the insight to come in and design those behaviors more effectively. Which of course is what we're going to do today. So Self Mastery 101. Can you give me the phrase we use our willpower wisely to install habits that run on autopilot such that we can truly be world class AI programmers. We start with who. It's our first idea. Again, who are you at your absolute best? Remind yourself of that energy work and love wise. How do you show up but also embrace your common humanity. Who you are at the most fundamental level is a human being. And guess what? One more time. Human beings aren't perfect. We all have negative habits. Let's quit shaming ourselves, embrace the common humanity, put on our lab coats, become scientists and work on our number one negative habit. That's our second idea. What? What is the number one negative habit? That if we got rid of it, we would literally change your life. We're going to talk about Kryptonites. It comes in dusty form and chunky form. We want to address both. But what is that number one habit you want to get rid of? I want to change your life. We are committed to helping you do that. Use these tools. What does that look like for you? What do you really want to change? What do you think you can or are prepared to commit to changing and that will have a significant impact in your life. So who? What then? Why? Again, we're going to have a general and specific. Let's see. The daimon curve vis a vis the demon curve. Who's Your boss, who you paying attention to, your Daimon or your demon. Because that's going to dictate whether you are in heaven or in hell. And you don't need to wait for that. That is a moment to moment to moment thing. That gap is either there or not. Stepping forward backwards, etc. We're going to come back to those metaphors. Then we're going to talk about how again we talked about the mapping, the ABCs, etc. Today I want to emphasize the fact that it all starts the how starts with you knowing you can change your behavior if you have failed many times in the past. That's not a character flaw per se, that's a design flaw. And we want to get really good at designing effective behaviors. The positive and the negative, getting rid of those negatives. But know that you can do this. We're going to look at the science of self efficacy and develop that belief in ourselves. Then of course we're going to map it. We're going to look at our prompt, etc. Which leads us to the three aspects of getting rid of a bad habit. We don't want to make it obvious, we want to make it invisible. That prompt, we don't want to make it easy to do, we want to make it hard to do. And then of course we're going to celebrate it when we do not do the negative behavior. But we're also going to needs work it. We are not going to shame ourselves. That's going to be a big theme of our chat today. No shame allowed. Be a scientist. Data is awesome. The number one thing we don't want to do is give up and leave the game. We've got to stay in and to do that we've got to hold high standards, but also a high sense of not only self compassion, but just wisdom. There are no perfect human beings. You and I won't be the first. And you're not going to say, oh, I'm going to be doing this or not doing this and go straight up into the right. It's going to be ziggy and zaggy and sometimes backwards and sometimes not as fast as we want. Welcome to the game of life. Have that wisdom with that self mastery, the courage to love everything else, et cetera. So that's the how operationalized is make your bad habit invisible, make it hard and then needs work it when you need to. Then the eighth idea is pickles versus cucumbers. It's a fantastic idea from Adam Alter's irresistible. Once your brain, which he thinks of as a cucumber. Once it's been pickled, it can't be unpickled. If you have habits, negative habits that you've run for a long time, you have pickled that part of your brain. It just is what it is. We want to have the humility pick to know that and then to create a pickle jar where we can see these negative habits and know your demon loves pickles, Loves to feast on those pickles. We're gonna find a substitute for them to feed on. Don't feed your demon will be a big idea there. Then the ninth idea, we're gonna revisit the idea that you need to day sear, decide, cut off, make the decision, go 100% all in on changing this again. If you need to recommit after faltering, fine, you recommit. But make that 100% commitment. It's paradoxically much easier. We'll revisit my past trips to McDonald's again. Me versus Mickey D's. And then the tenth idea is we're going to plus three it. I'm going to propose that we can look at that, that plus minus little thing that we have, the spectrum we have with Abraham Maslow. Step forward into growth or back into safety or back into negative habits. What's the negative thing you're doing? How do we alchemize that into a positive? And that's not a plus one gain or even a plus two gain. It's a plus three gain that we're going to have fun putting into action today. All right, our first big idea. One more time. We're going to start with who? Who are you at your best? Optimize equals optimist equals best equals eudaimon equals hero. Energy, work and love wise. Who are you at your best? We want to repeat that beingness. That's how we create our identity. Remember that identity drives behaviors and the behavior drives the identity in a beautiful virtuous loop and asterisks. We also want to know that we are human and there are no perfect human beings. Thank you, Abraham Maslow. And guess what? You and I, we're not going to be the first. We want to know that the eternal battle that has been repeated across all cultures and across all time is that battle that exists within each of us. Whether you're talking about the Bhagavad Gita or the latest Avengers superhero flick, it's all the same thing. It's a battle on an external battlefield that's a representation of the internal battle we all always Face the that Daimon and the demon, the best within us and the not so great within us. The question is, who's your boss? If you're going to be a world class AI programmer, who are you allowing to call the shots? The Daimon or the Demon? So again, we want to hold high standards, but we want to know that that sense of what we're aspiring to be and who we're aspiring to be, those are guiding stars, not distant shores. We're never actually going to hit that place of perfection where we're just always on and expressing that best version of ourselves. So, guiding stars, not distant shores. We want to be optimalists, not perfectionists. Embrace the gains we're making while recognizing we're all in the same battle, which is between the higher and lower versions of ourselves. And there's that beautiful dance of going for it, holding high standards, doing it with a sense of humility, knowing how hard it's going to be, letting go of the shame, using the data as a powerful force for our own optimization day in and day out, knowing we're never going to be exonerated, et cetera. But there you go. Start with who, which includes that best within us and the always present, not best within us. Whatever you've got that's going on in your life that you may not be that proud of. No, you're not alone. We've all got our own little kryptonites. Or big kryptonites, as the case may be. Let's just get to work. Hey, this is Brian again. I hope you enjoyed that overview of a Mastery Series session and got some wisdom out of it. You can apply to your life today. What was it again?
