You're listening to Optimize with Bryan Johnson. More wisdom in less time. Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another micro class. This one's on energy now. It's inspired by Are you fully charged? By Tom Rath. In this series of micro classes we've been talking about the three conditions for getting your charge up, meaning interactions and energy. We're going to do a whole note in series on a book that Tom wrote called Eat, move, sleep. For now I want to focus on energy as it relates to making a connection between what we're doing right now in our overall sense of well being right now, how we feel right now. What's fascinating is that research has been done where if you ask most people, hey, why do you work out or why do you want to eat healthfully, right? Most people, 75% of them will tell you it's because they want the future them to live a little longer or maybe to lose a little bit of weight or a lot of bit of weight or whatever. It's an abstract long term goal. 75% of people, that's their motivation, their stated why. 25% of the people say, you know what, it's because I want to feel great right now. I want to feel grounded, I want to feel centered, I want to be better in my relationships, better in my creativity and just feel good. Well which one of those motivations, the long term abstract or the near term immediate, do you think motivates behavior better? This is the culturally accepted conditioned way to approach our health and well being. Think long term, but this is what works. People who have These goals, exercise 32% less, should just make that, that 32% less than these people. We need to make the connection between what we're doing right now and how we feel. I exercise not so that I can live longer, but so that I can produce more powerfully and feel great right now. Boost my mood. Little side note, exercise boosts your mood for up to 12 hours a day, in a day. That's awesome. Makes you more creative. It's like taking a little bit of Ritalin, a little bit of Prozac. That's why I exercise. I get a good night of sleep not because of all the abstract benefits, but because I feel better the next morning and that's important to me. I eat well because that's what makes me feel good right now. So think about your reasons for why you can dial in your eating, your moving and your sleeping and make them concrete and immediate. Make the connection between what you're doing today and how you feel today. That's the way to change what you do consistently. Energy now. Hope you enjoyed. Here's to feeling great today. Get your charge up more soon. See ya. Isn't it a bit odd that we went from Math to Science to history but somehow missed the class on how to live?
